Download or read book The New Physiology in Surgical and General Practice written by A. Rendle Short and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Physiology in Surgical and General Practice, Fifth Edition deals with surgical problems and common diseases confronting practitioners of surgical and general medicine. The author reviews the physiology of the muscles during activity that includes the muscles of the heart, of the lungs, blood flow, adrenaline flow, and the central nervous system. The author discuses the functions of the kidneys, renal diseases, and the tests to gauge renal function. Food deficiency diseases can be caused by the omission or insufficient intake of an essential food ingredient such as vitamin B which prevents beriberi. The author also discusses the incidence of appendicitis based on the records of the Bristol Royal Infirmary and points that relative to the total food eaten, a decrease of cellulose consumption can cause appendicitis. Human races that consume vegetable foods seldom have appendicitis inflammation; when they follow the European diet, they lose their immunity. The author also describes surgical shock, localization of functions in the brain, and the action of cutaneous anesthetics. This book is intended for the general practitioner, consulting doctor of surgery, and medical students.

This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Physiology in Surgical and General Practice The last edition was published just before the war. Needless to say we have learned a great deal in the past five years. Research in pure physiology and its applications to the clinical sciences has fallen principally into the hands of the Americans, whilst the British investigators have devoted themselves especially to problems arising out of the material presented by the wounded in the war. The results of study, observation, and experiment along both these lines are here gathered together. Much of the book is new, but the objects and scope remain as in the preface to the original edition. To make way for additional material considerable sections have been deleted altogether. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Newer Physiology in Surgical and General Practice An effort has been made to explain matters so simply that they may be intelligible to those having the most elementary knowledge of physiology, and all technical terms have been avoided or defined. There are excellent manuals now published treating of the application of physiology to diseases which principally concern the consulting physician. This little book limits itself to surgical problems, and to the common every-day aspects of disease that confront us all, physicians, surgeons, and general practitioners alike. I owe a debt of thanks to my chief, Professor A. F. Stanley Kent, for some valuable suggestions and criticisms. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Physiology in Surgical and General Practice The last edition was published just before the war. Needless to say we have learned a great deal in the past live years. The chapters on food deficiency diseases, the blood and spleen, surgical shock, the spinal cord, and the functions of the cortex, have been re-written almost in their entirety. A new chapter on the heart has been contributed by my colleagues Dr. Carey Coombs and Dr. C. E. K. Herapath, to whom I am greatly indebted for this service. There are considerable additions to the chapter on digestion, and less important changes in nearly all the other parts of the book. Very little is left of the first edition, published in 1911. Large sections have been omitted to make room for these additions without greatly increasing the size of the book. In the third edition, new chapters are introduced on vitamines and the genital glands; the articles on surgical shock, the digestive apparatus, the pituitary and pineal glands, and on chloroform poisoning arc largely rewritten. There are also important additions to the chapters on the thyroid gland and the physiology of the spinal cord, besides minor changes elsewhere. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Physiology: For Students and Practitioners of MedicineThis Handbook is the outcome of a desire to present to students a work that may Serve to connect pure physiology with the physiology specially useful to physicians; and I have endeavored to adapt it to the curricula of medical schools Where the subject is taught in the English language. With this end in view, I undertook the now difficult task of selecting from the vast store of knowledge what I trust may be taken as a fairly symmetrical and comprehensive presentation of human physi ology, not too voluminous for students or for ready reference by active practitioners. The subject has been treated from a medical standpoint; not unduly neglecting, it is hoped, pure physiology and biology.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Textbook of Physiology Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Textbook of Physiology Classic Reprint written by Martin Flack and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 828 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104book of Physiology The preparation of this textbook was begun before the war at a time when we were both actively engaged in teaching at the London Hospital Medical College, and when it was considered that we might with advantage put together and harmonize the physiology we were teaching. In order to secure uniformity of style, each section has been written in the first instance by the same hand, and then finished in its present form by careful collaboration between the two of us. While physiological research has been confined in many directions, progress along certain lines has been especially remarkable since the outbreak of war. We have endeavoured to take these recent advances into consideration, before completing the work, in spite of the great difficulties under which we, in common with all physiologists, have laboured. The book has been written with the primary object of giving to the student in an easily understandable form the fundamental facts and theories of physiology, hearing in mind the limitations necessary in a student's textbook. We have followed the example of Michael Foster, and have avoided burdening the students memory with the names of authorities. When ready to leave the narrow scope of a textbook for the wide realms of independent thought, those who wish to extend their physiological knowledge can easily find their way into the literature of research by means of the various archives and journals of physiology. Although written primarily to meet the requirements of the medical student, it is hoped that, in view of the ever-increasing importance of the proper application of physiology to general medicine, the work may also prove of value to the general practitioner. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scientific Papers, Vol. 38: Physiology, Medicine, Surgery, Geology Ling through the cities, be esteemed physicians not only in name but in reality. But inexperience is a bad treasure, and a bad fund to those who possess it, whether in opinion or reality, being devoid of self-reliance and contentedness, and the nurse both of timidity and audacity. For timidity betrays a want of powers, and audacity a lack of skill. They are, indeed, two things, knowledge and opinion, of which the one makes its possessor really to know, the other to be ignorant.
