Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Physiology and Other Addresses Ivhen we look back on the history of physiology, it seems perfectly evident that physiological progress has been dependent on the progress of physics and chemistry. On this point there is no room for doubt. To take only one example, where should we be in the investigation of animal metabolism but for the ideas and experimental methods furnished to us by physics and chemistry? We should know next to nothing about respiration, animal heat, nutrition, or muscular and other work. Physiology depends at every turn on physics and chemistry, and its future progress will certainly be equally dependent on advances in physical and chemical knowledge. This consideration has, I imagine, weighed very heavily in the minds of those physiologists Who have concluded that physiology is nothing but applied physics and chemistry. A further fact which weighs equally heavily is that in spite of diligent search nothing contradicting the fundamental laws of conservation of matter and energy has been discovered in connection with living organisms. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Physiology and Other Addresses The addresses collected in this volume refer to different aspects of one subject - the distinctive character of biological knowledge, and its relation to other departments of knowledge. Ideas on this subject, and on the connection of natural science in general with "humanistic" branches of knowledge, are at present, as it seems to me, changing rapidly, and in a direction which is only very imperfectly realised as yet. The scientific theories which dominated the world during the latter half of last century are undergoing profound modification, and the estrangement created by them between natural science and other branches of knowledge is tending to disappear. At the same time new lines of advance in natural science are opening out in all directions, and perhaps most strikingly in biology. For this latter reason I have adopted The New Physiology as a title for the book. In these addresses the claims of biology to an independent position among the sciences are strongly maintained as against the current belief that biology is only applied physics and chemistry. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 662 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Physiology, an Outline of the Science of Life The plan of the present book first assumed fixed form during a journey which I made in the year 1890 to different points on the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea for the purpose of making comparative-physiological researches. After my return my uni versity lectures in Jena gave me an opportunity to present the collected material in connected form. But the greater part of the labour remained to be performed, and in the summer of 1892 I began the writing of the book. Although for nearly ten years I have been busy with the problems of general physiology and have endeavoured to contribute something to their solution, so much labour has been associated with the collection, examination, selec tion completion, and arrangement of the much scattered material, that the book has progressed slowly - and with varied feelings on, my part I have often wondered whether the result would accord with the enthusiasm and love with which the task was undertaken. Only the criticism of my colleagues can decide this. It is not to be expected that a book which brings together for the first time in a unified form a mass of material hitherto regarded as hetero geneous, shall upon its first appearance pretend to completeness. I cherish no illusions that I have succeeded more than approx1 mately. I am fully aware that many faults and errors must have crept in, and these I beg my colleagues in friendliness to correct. It has afforded me especial satisfaction that one of my American colleagues, Professor Frederic S Lee, of New York, in an address before the New York Academy of Sciences has developed simultaneously and independently the same ideas regarding the claims of modern physiology as are presented in detail by myself in the first chapter of this book. These ideas have also been expressed by me elsewhere, especially in an article in the Monist (chicago, If a book is to reach a wide circle of readers, its language must be neither too technical nor too prosaic. I have endeavoured to comply with this requirement. I wished to write something that would appeal first to my fellow physiologists, and offer them, besides certain new facts and ideas, a summary of our scattered knowledge. But at the same time I wished the work to give to any interested scientific reader, whether a student of medicine. Book First Book in Physiology

Download or read book First Book in Physiology written by Worthington Hooker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-17 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Book in Physiology: For the Use of Schools and Families, Intended as Introductory to the Larger Work by the Same Author There is another consideration bearing upon this point, which is of great importance. It is essential to the successful study of science that good habits of mind be formed, and the earlier they are formed the better. I need not stop to show that clear logical presentations of facts and principles tend to form such habits, and that a loose, confused mode of presenting them tends to form habits of an opposite character. Let me not be understood to advocate that prominence of logical framework, as it may be called, which is so common in books for instruction. With all this show of logical arrangement, there is often much that is really very illogical. With the beginner. At least, the less there is of the formalities of arrangement the better. And yet there should in reality be a strict regard to the proper logical order in introducing facts and principles to the mind of the learner. If this natural order be observed, every page that the student learns serves to prepare his mind for what comes after. There is no point in which books for instruction so often fail as in this. Most books for the instruction of beginners in science, present a strange mixture of child's talk, and language that the child cannot understand, but can only learn by rote. Even the hard technical terms of science often enter abundantly into the compound. It seems to be forgotten that great simplicity of language may be the vehicle of even a deep philosophy, and is consistent with an elevated style. Clear, precise statement, logical order of arrange ment, and felicitous illustration, are the elements of such a style. And these elements cannot exist, unless there be an appreciation in the writer's mind of the attitude of the minds that he addresses. He must not only see clearly the facts and principles of science himself, but he must know how to make others see them clearly also. Download or read book Principles of General Physiology Classic Reprint written by William Maddock Bayliss and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 896 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of General Physiology IN the preparation of courses of lectures dealing with various physiological processes I have found considerable difficulty, and spent much time, in the extraction from books and original papers, many of them not biological, of material of fundamental importance in the proper treatment of the subject. The mechanism of reactions in heterogeneous systems may be mentioned. It seemed to me, therefore, that the results of this labour might be of use to others, whose work does not allow them sufficient time to read articles which do not appear to bear upon their particular domain of science. In arranging these facts, however, it became manifest that a somewhat wider treatment would be of more value, so that the book might be of service to all desiring a general, elementary, treatment of what may be called abstract physiology, as distinct from the applied physiology required by the agricultural, medical, or veterinary student for the purpose of his profession. In extenuation of my conduct in producing a work on physiology for the use, as I venture to hope, of all those who have any interest in science, I should like to quote a few words by Huxley to be found in his address, On the Educational Value of the Natural History Sciences (huxley, 1902-1903, p. 59 - see Bibliography). He gives an answer to the question. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Papers and Addresses Classic Reprint

Download or read book Papers and Addresses Classic Reprint written by William Henry Welch and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Papers and Addresses On the eighth of last April Dr. Welch attained his seventieth birthday. To many of his friends it seemed that such an occasion ought not to pass without some manifestation of affection and admiration on the part of the medical profession of America to one who has long stood as its leader, and that a worthy expression would be the preservation in suitable form of the chief contributions from his pen. Dr. Welch's writings are scattered through a great variety of publications, many of which are more or less inaccessible. It was accordingly decided to bring together and to publish the more important of his numerous papers and addresses of the past forty-two years, publications which reveal the great part he has played in the development of medical science and medical education. With the permission of Dr. Welch, the editor, in his student days, had collected these papers and addresses with a view to republication. When it became evident that the work would be interrupted by the war the appended Bibliography was published. On his return from France after the Armistice the editor was invited by the Publication Committee to undertake, under its supervision, the editing of these volumes. The collected material covers a period during which there have been great advances in medicine, especially through the impetus following the development of cellular pathology, the discovery and study of pathogenic microorganisms, and the more widespread adoption of experimental methods. It will be noted that a number of the papers, and especially addresses and discussions, are from stenographic reports. Some of these have been revised and given appropriate titles, but no attempt has been made in these or other articles to alter the subject matter so as to bring it up to the later state of knowledge.
