Book The New Pentecostal Message

Download or read book The New Pentecostal Message written by Lewis Brogdon and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-06-22 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The prosperity movement has influenced millions of people in North America, Asia, Europe, South America, and Africa through Pentecostal, Charismatic and nondenominational preachers in some of the largest churches in the world. CNN, ABC, and Time magazine have examined the preachers and churches in this popular and controversial movement. Scholars and church leaders have studied it for more than two decades, producing dozens of books and articles on it. Considering the widespread popularity of the prosperity movement and the attention it is given by its critics, Brogdon asks, "Is prosperity preaching the new Pentecostal message?" In order to answer this question, one has to examine the prosperity movement as a Pentecostal movement instead of a Word of Faith movement that is a revised form of New Thought metaphysics and Science of Mind. Brogdon provides an introduction to the prosperity movement as a Pentecostal movement. He asks important questions in the study of the prosperity movement, such as who popularized prosperity teaching, Oral Roberts or Ken Hagin? Do all Pentecostals agree with the prosperity doctrine? Is prosperity teaching good news to the poor? Has prosperity replaced the emphasis on the Holy Spirit? The answers may surprise you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christ's New Address completes a six-volume series of sermons by Bruce Taylor based on the Common Lectionary (Revised). Together, they provide a theologically rich, sacramentally reflective, ecumenically compatible, and biblically centered collection of proclamations for Sundays and major feast days. An appendix to this volume offers a sermon preached as a departure from the lectionary following the tornado that devastated Norman, Oklahoma, when the author was serving as a pastor in Ponca City. His sermons bear strong evidence of his commitment to Christian unity and dedication to the church's heritage as well as his conviction of its contemporary relevance through corporate witness and individual discipleship. Included in this compilation for the second half of the church year, featuring Gospel readings from Luke, are several story sermons that illustrate the use of this form of preaching within the lectionary framework. Christ's New Address is offered for use by preachers and devotional readers alike, who will find it an engaging invitation to the beauty of sacramental worship and the comfort and challenge of the scripture passages that are commended for Christian worship in the lectionary cycle.

Download or read book Pentecost Fire written by Schuyler Rhodes and published by CSS Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a time of divisiveness, poverty, oppression, and war, the messages of Schuyler Rhodes send a clarion call for renewal in the church. Like the apostles on Pentecost, Rhodes offers words that comfort and provoke; words that empower and give us vision of a better world. His sermons build on the gospel texts to bring spiritual insight and hope in place of cynicism and despair. Bringing the ancient biblical wisdom to bear on contemporary society, this volume is excellent for inspiration, study, and discussion. These sermons tell the truth, unsettling or devastating as this may be to conventional Christian ears.... I love this little book. It weaves through our scripture with verve, dignity, and good humor; the touch is now light, now a flick of the whip, the words rife with the truth that both hurts and heals. (from the Foreword) Daniel Berrigan, SJ Schuyler Rhodes is the pastor of Temple United Methodist Church in San Francisco, California. He previously pastored Washington Square United Methodist Church in New York City and served as executive director and campus pastor for the Wesley Foundation, a broad-based campus ministry at the University of California (Berkeley). Rhodes' commitment to social justice and peace has taken him around the globe. Over the last decade, he has traveled to more than a dozen countries, serving as a delegate to several consultations of the World Council of Churches, as the secretary of the Social and International Affairs Committee of the World Methodist Council, and as the chair of the board of directors for Pastors for Peace and the Interreligious Foundation for Community Organizing. He has also been a consultant on Peace and Justice Ministries for the Methodist Church's General Board of Global Ministries, developing liturgical and training materials as well as representing the General Board at numerous national and international gatherings. A prolific writer, Rhodes is an honors graduate of Drew University Theological School (M.Div.) and the State University of New York at Potsdam (B.A.).

Book The Kerygmatic Spirit

Download or read book The Kerygmatic Spirit written by Amos Yong and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of fifteen sermons by one of the leading pentecostal theologians today provides insight into the form, style, and content of preaching in the pentecostal tradition while also being suggestive of normative homiletical theory and practice. The Kergymatic Spirit argues that Spirit-empowered preaching is apostolic not only with regard to being rooted in the scriptural traditions but also with regard to connecting the that of the early Christian message with the this of contemporary experience and discipleship. Hence, rather than only reflecting pentecostal preaching of the sort that happens in the pulpits of churches connected to the modern movement by that name, these sermons are presented as the participating in the form of gospel proclamation inspired and empowered by the divine Spirit poured out on all flesh on the Day of Pentecost by the risen Christ from the right hand of the Father. Whether read or heard (there are links to video and audio archives throughout), these homilies are illustrative of exegetical and expositional practice that connects the biblical text with Spirit-filled faithfulness in the twenty-first-century ecumenical church and world at large. ""Many of today's best preachers know how to be timeless and timely. In The Kerygmatic Spirit, Amos Yong strikes that balance. His sermons bring together profound truths and accessible language, faithfulness to the text and to the modern context, appeals to the mind with appeals to the heart and the will. Perhaps most importantly, Dr. Yong's example reminds us that our preaching is better when we theologize, and our theology is better when we preach."" --Jared E. Alcantara, Baylor University's Truett Theological Seminary, Waco, Texas ""This collection of sermons by a leading, Asian-American, Pentecostal theologian, Amos Yong, will set your hearts and minds on fire with the Holy Spirit. The homiletical focus of these sermons not only centers on the holistic work of the Spirit in the church and world, but they are fueled by the Spirit of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Read these and your spiritual burning will be matched by intellectual learning from one of the major theological thinkers in our time."" --Luke A. Powery, Dean, Duke University Chapel Amos Yong is Professor of Theology & Mission at Fuller Theological Seminary, Pasadena, California. Josh P. S. Samuel is Professor of Bible and Theology and Director of Worship and Creative Arts Ministry at Master's College and Seminary, Peterborough, Ontario. Tony Richie is adjunct Professor of Theology at Pentecostal Theological Seminary, Cleveland, Tennessee, and Lead Pastor at New Harvest Church of God, Knoxville, Tennessee.

Book The Empowering God

    Book Details:
  • Author : Edward Y. Suh
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2021-05-20
  • ISBN : 1725277050
  • Pages : 194 pages

Download or read book The Empowering God written by Edward Y. Suh and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-05-20 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Prosperity movement has been rightly challenged on biblical, theological, and pastoral grounds and has been found to be lacking. Yet, the movement continues to grow in popularity around the world, particularly amongst the poor. What deeper factors might account for this continued sociological appeal? In this unique study, the author draws on biblical and theological sources as well as research on human flourishing from psychological, sociological, economic, and anthropological perspectives to evaluate possible reasons for this phenomenon. Consequently, he finds that one unexplored reason for the lasting resonance of the Prosperity movement is its unexpected effectiveness in leading practitioners to overcome the trauma of victimization and disempowerment. This undercurrent of empowerment suggests that there are ways Prosperity theology can mature to preserve this dynamic whilst shedding its more questionable practices--thus potentially giving rise to an Evangelical expression of this movement centered around the themes of shalom and human flourishing. Thus, the constructive aspect of this book proposes an Evangelical theology of empowerment and abundance formed around a robust image of the Empowering God that accounts for abundance and lack, health and disability, and the normal ebbs and flows of life and death.

Book The Holiness Pentecostal Tradition

Download or read book The Holiness Pentecostal Tradition written by Vinson Synan and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 1997-08-25 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Called "a pioneer contribution" by Church History when it was first published in 1971 as The Holiness-Pentecostal Movement in the United States, this volume has now been revised and enlarged by Vinson Synan to account for the incredible changes that have occurred in the church world during the last quarter of the twentieth century. Synan brings together the stories of the many movements usually listed as "holiness," "pentecostal," or "charismatic," and shows that there is an identifiable "second blessing" tradition in Christianity that began with the Catholic and Anglican mystics, that was crystallized in the teaching of John Wesley, and that was further perpetuated through the holiness and Keswick movements of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to the appearance of modern Pentecostalism. Synan then chronicles the story of the spread of Pentecostalism around the world after the heady days of the Azusa Street awakening, with special attention given to the beginnings of the movement in those nations where Pentecostalism has become a major religious force. He also examines the rise of various mainline-church charismatic movements that have their roots in Pentecostalism. Because of the explosive growth of the Pentecostal movement in the last half of the century, Pentecostals and Charismatics now constitute the second largest family of Christians in the world after the Roman Catholic Church. "This could well be the major story of Christianity in the twentieth century," writes Synan. "Pentecostalism has grown beyond a mere passing 'movement' . . . and can now be seen as a major Christian 'tradition' alongside the Roman Catholic, Orthodox, and Reformation Protestant traditions." The Holiness-Pentecostal Tradition will continue to be an important handbook for shaping our understanding of this phenomenon.
