Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Orleans Medical and Surgical Journal, 1856, Vol. 12 Elevation, ventilation, light and sunshine, will in a great degree expel mosquitoes. Mosquitoes infest the lower, more than the upper stories of houses they prefer rooms which are sombre, damp, largely-stocked with farni ture, unventilated, sheltered from the sun light and wind, and withal environed with plants, shrubbery, trees and waters. As humidity is one of the conditions most favorable to the mosquito plague, the builders and proprietors of houses in New Orleans seem to have studied - at least, they have adopted, the most effectual mode of attaining and perpetuating that condition, - than which, few things can be more insalubrious to the inhabitants, though highly salutiferous to the mosquito family. At least nine store houses in ten, have the lower floors placed directly on the cozy ground, on a level with the adjoining streets, all of which sink below the level of the river during its prolonged high water stage that lasts half of the year. The same faulty construction prevails in many dwelling houses and hotels. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-10-08 with total page 852 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New-Orleans Medical and Surgical Journal, Devoted to Medicine and the Collateral Sciences, Vol. 2: For 1845-46 Infectious air from the hold of a ship. Or from clothes or goods. Or from a trunk, might destroy a few individuals exposed to its influence but it could not go far; it would soon be diluted so as to become innocuous or should it become modified in some way in an impure atmosphere. Then it would no longer be the same disease. One fact is here introduced to illustrate this position. In 1817, a barge left this city with goods for a store keeper at Bayou Sara during the passage up the river, and shortly after the arrival of the barge, every one of the crew and passengers died of yellow fever. The goods were landed and conveyed to the store; and the store keeper who opened the packages, although he was warned not to do so, sickened and died of yellow fever; but no other person in the neighborhood contracted the disease. The whole subject is then narrowed down to the question of contagion. It is asked; why do we hear nothing of the yellow fever having prevailed on this continent, and in the West India Islands, before they were discovered and inhabited by Europeans; why then would we ask, do we hear nothing of bilious and congestive and typhus fevers, and divers other diseases, unknown to this continent, anterior to that period. Will any one say that bilious and congestive and typhus fevers are imported? Yet there was a time when they were no more known on this continent than yellow fever. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New-Orleans Medical and Surgical Journal, 1853: July, 1853 That the effects of alcoholic beverages on the Ethiopian race are pernicious, is sufficiently proved by the fact, that plantation property diminishes in value in proportion to its proximity to villages, grog shops, or those places where slaves can' procure ardent spirits without leave from their masters. It is 'also proved by the fact, that no sens ible planter, although he may have more land than he wants, will die pose of ever so small a lot, even at an extravagant price, for fear that a grog shop or grocery, where his slaves can obtain ardent spirits, will be erected on it. Hence, for many miles together, through the plant. Ing region, the weary traveler often finds no resting place or tavern. The owners ofthe soil will not sell land enough to build a public house upon, for fear that his negroes will become' corrupted by the facilities that such places generally afford, to the easy attaiment of ardent spirits. Samuel Davis, Esq., opposite Natchez, has four times as much land as his negroes can cultivate; 'yet neither love nor money can Induce him to sell a single piece, the'size of a town lot, for fear that a grocery or retail liquor store may be established on it to corrupt his negroes. The Parish of Concordia and a few private individuals own a few lots, opposite Natchez, constituting the little village of Vidalia, consisting of a court-house, jail, lawyer's offices, a printing press of one of the best papers in the South, and two hotels. Yet Mr. Davis cannot be pre. Vailed Upon to enlarge Vidalia, by selling lots. Although ofi'ered New Orleans prices. If he were to do so, he knows Very well that grog shops would Soon be erected upon them, and his negroes would become worthless, from the facilities of obtaining alcoholic beverages.
