Book The New Opportunity of the Church Classic Reprint

Download or read book The New Opportunity of the Church Classic Reprint written by Robert Elliott Speer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Opportunity of the Church This little book is not an attempt to prescribe any pro gram or method of reconstruction or to define in any comprehensive way the present tasks of the Christian Church. A good deal more is called for to-day than this little volume at all considers. Good will and earnest purpose are not enough. There must be also careful and competent thinking out of the economic and social problems involved in the next forward steps in human progress. But good will and earnest purpose must be back of all such thinking and it is for good will and earnest purpose that this little book appeals. In the midst of much hesitation and questioning it is a simple word of summons and reassurance, in the faith of the motto written over the door of the old hotel in Duala. Book The New Opportunities of the Ministry Classic Reprint

Download or read book The New Opportunities of the Ministry Classic Reprint written by Frederick Henry Lynch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Opportunities of the Ministry Mr. Lynch has amply proved his case, which is to present the opportunities afforded by the modern ministry. Men who want to make the most of their lives must consider the claims in the various branches of religious work. The immense need for leadership in education, in scholarship, in social adjust ment, in missionary enterprise, which (mr. Lynch establishes, itself constitutes a call to some men. Phillips Brooks shortly before his death said that the next twenty years would offer greater Opportunity for the Chris tian minister than any other like period in history. I think this little book proves the contention, presenting some of the needs of our time that must be met if we are to make true progress. Some of the finer spirits who read it will surely learn from it a nobler con ception of personal duty. There are movements of our time which show the essentially religious character of the age, such as the movement towards church unity, the great missionary movement, the international peace movement, which are all Christian in spirit and motive. The whole community also is being pervaded with a new sense of social duty. Nowhere in the world are these and similar movements more living and more wide-spread than in America. No where also are there arrayed greater forces of antagonism and keener problems for our Christian civilization. The largest need of to-day is a supply of men who will grasp the new opportunities of the ministry as a sphere of work and will lead the Church in her ever-widening service. The various types of that service are well brought out in this book, and the urgency of the need is empha sized. We want men who are prepared to undertake some heroic tasks, men of insight and of outlook, of courage and of consecra tion. The broad and forceful appeal of this book will surely not miss its mark. Book The League of Nations And the Opportunity of the Church Classic Reprint

Download or read book The League of Nations And the Opportunity of the Church Classic Reprint written by Charles Gore and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The League of Nations, And, the Opportunity of the Church But they will not be satisfied with military successes. They demand also this pacific measure - the organisation of a League of Nations. They regard it, no doubt, as difficult of realisation but not as impracticable. They speak of it as the most hopeful, perhaps the only hopeful, basis of a just and enduring peace. Something will have to be said later about the details of the scheme, so far as they have been formulated or outlined. But let us take it now simply in its most general idea - that of a League of Nations to maintain and enforce peace, with an international tribunal to decide "justiciable" disputes between nations - that is such questions as having been embodied in treaties or coming under the head of some accepted international law admit of settlement by judicial process - and for the greater matters of controversy an international court of arbitration which must at least have all such matters fully laid before it by the contending nations, and have time allowed to it to make proposals and to have them listened to and considered by both sides, before either nation or group of nations could go to war or mobilise its forces for war without becoming the enemy of the whole League; and the authority of the League is to have behind it the sanction of economic pressure to be exerted by the whole League - such as the boycotting of a recalcitrant nation - and, at the last resort, the armed force of the whole League to support its action. Book On to Christ the Gospel of the New Era Classic Reprint

Download or read book On to Christ the Gospel of the New Era Classic Reprint written by Edwin a McAlpin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-07-28 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On to Christ, the Gospel of the New Era The object of this study is to bring home to all thoughtful minds some of the problems of the Church in dealing with the opportunities of the New Era. An effort is made in the first half of this book to point out the failures of the past, and then in the last half we try to show how the Church can meet these problems in a practical way. The problem is outlined in the first chapter and then different phases of it are discussed with suggestions of how they should be met in the following chapters. In the Second Part we make some practical sugges tions on the reconstruction of the Church's life and thought. Some of these solutions may seem radical, but it must be remembered that structural weaknesses cannot be permanently repaired by superficial patches. The structure must be rebuilt and the weakness must be climi nated. It may be impossible to get unanimous support for suggestions that seem to affect whole ecclesiastical organisations, but no other alternative seems adequate to meet the needs of the New Era. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Soul of Wealth: The Opportunity of the Church of England Would I might see them now, the walls of the city to be, The new Jerusalems emerald, chrysoprase, and chalcedony I But the eye of my spirit is dimmed, the darkness I cannot dispel. Wherever I turn it is dark, on land dark, and yet darker on sea. But the seeker for truth shall behold: blessed John beheld the town Where the saints stand about the throne, where martyrs take up their crown. His tale of it glows with fire, with heartsease, with joyful content, And oh 1 for a heart of resolve to share in its high renown. And the builder of truth shall behold; when Alaric crashed in his might A whirlwind of terror on Rome, and its legions were winnowed in flight, Then Austin did gather his soul to tell of the city of God In a dream of its gallant bypaths, and its gardens of purest delight. For a new Atlantis I long; but the old clingeth round my feet, When a new song I would sing, the old one lilts too sweet: I would gladly surrender the old, to behold the Kingdom new, As becometh a dreamer of dreams, who seeks to make vision complete. The noise of the tumult has passed, the war-travail wails to its end. The close of an age is appearing; whereto shall the vision extend? The soul of the future is lost if it gain not the city of God, Lo !we are the seekers, the builders; we that soul to its destiny bend. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Opportunity: Being Sermons and Speeches Delivered in America I can say with absolute sincerity that when I delivered, as the occasion called for them, the sermons and speeches which this little vol ume contains, I had no thought whatever of their subsequent reproduction in a more per manent form. Hence, in part, their character. Addressed to audiences, different though kin dred, hundreds of miles apart, they naturally overlap and cover to some degree the same ground. The request for their publication took me entirely by surprise, but it came to me from such quarters that to refuse would have been both churlish and ungrateful; the object, as I understand it, being to preserve a memento of occasions which however inadequately I was able to use them were some of them unique.
