Book excerpt: Since the introduction of high-speed digital computers and associated software systems there has been considerable effort directed toward utilizing the digital computer to simulate the behavior of various types of linear and nonlinear systems. Design engineers use such simulation programs to study system characteristics and evaluate proposed designs without having to actually construct the system or its subsystems in the laboratory. Design errors may be detected and alternate designs quickly evaluated by using such a tool. The performance under adverse environments such as a nuclear radiation environment may also be simulated. Frequently these environments are very difficult to obtain and control in the laboratory. Several large programs have been written to accomplish the simulation of various kinds of systems. Two important areas of simulation which have received attention are (1) the simulation of systems composed exclusively of digital switching elements, and (2) the simulation of analog electronic circuitry.

The methodology employed in performing the analysis is presented in a way that will aid future users of TRAF-NETSIM. The advantages and disadvantages ofTRAF-NETSIM are documented along with the human resource requirements for a first-time application of the program. TRAF-NETS1M permits the engineer to compare alternative control and design strategies for a traffic intersection, corridor, or network and allows the user to design and test within the office environment the simulation of many traffic options. TRAF-NETSIM attempts to be as realistic as possible. Lanes can be channelized for turns only or designated for carpool or bus activity: Pedestrian activity, long- and short-term events, and bus routes can be simulated as well. Creativity permits the engineer to evaluate unusual networks when required. The output ofTRAF-NETSIM provides the user with a host of measures of effectiveness to compare traffic options. Delay time/vehicle, number of phase failures, speed, vehicle miles, stops/vehicle trip are some of the measures of effectiveness that can be used to evaluate networks.

Recommendations are presented on more efficient strategies for coordination using actuated control. Representative arterial traffic control problems were modeled into a statistical testbed using TRAF-NETSIM. A set of scenarios covering a range of arterial geometry, traffic volumes and traffic actuated control settings were tested and evaluated. PASSER II-90 was used to develop base signal timing plans. Chapter One describes the various objectives that were intended to be achieved by this research. It also discusses signal coordination strategies for actuated control. Chapter Two presents the background information and various traffic engineering simulation models available for use in this study. Chapters Three and Four explain the study methodology adopted for this research and the results obtained for the various study scenarios, respectively. Chapter Five presents the conclusions and recommendations of the research.
