Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Monthly Magazine, 1853, Vol. 99 We dwell upon this part of the subject the more, because it conveys a true picture of the evils of a system which was so long and strenuous y advocated, to the protraction of an opposite commercial policy, and of a wiser course in raising the revenue. Yet this very system, namely, a free interchange of commodities, was offered by France to England at the treaty of Utrecht, under the auspices of De Torcy, the French minister; but it was regarded by the ruling party in parliament as an insidious attempt to injure Great Britain. It did, in fact, carry an appearance of equity too evidently not to be suspected by the influential party in the government of that time, with its strong feeling of private interest, and its crude notions of the true principles of traflic. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Monthly Magazine, 1857, Vol. 110 When the gos el was first preached in the different parts of the earth, the religion of Christ excited nowhere any surprise, for it had been pro phesied in all places, and it was universally expected. The birth of a man-god, a Divine incarnation, is the belief, the faith of humanity, the great dogma which has reappeared under more or less mysterious forms In the old worships and among the most ancient traditions. The Messiah, the Redeemer promised to fallen man in the terrestrial paradise has never ceased to be announced from age to age in all countries. The people of God, specially chosen to be the depositaries of that promise, spread the notion of it among men several centuries before its accomplishment. Such were, in the designs of Providence, the results of those great revo lutions which agitated the Jews and dispersed them in the world, and especiall in Asia. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Monthly Magazine, 1861, Vol. 123 But every Federal system contains defects which home the efforts of the legislator. De Tocqueville, in his well-known work on Democracy in America, long ago pointed out the relative weakness of the govern ment of the Union as a defect inherent in the Federal system, that the sovereignty of the separate States was apparently weaker, but in reality stronger, than that of the Union, and that, above all, war was the main peril of confederations. Let it only withdraw premiums and bounties from the maintenance of slavery. Thus far be at least impartial. Let the fiscal burden, in short, bear but some reason able relation to the difference in cost of free and slave labour, and to endure only while the taint and cheap advantage of slavery remain, but to be withdrawn the moment slavery is at an end. That, I believe, would accomplish every object. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Monthly Magazine and Literary Journal, 1833, Vol. 3 We shall treat very briefly the delicate point of anonymous editorship we are convinced that this, too, has advantages, which its opposite can not counterbalance. If a name is to give importance to editorial dignity, it must, of course, be one of considerable note. The individual so osten sibly sustaining an office that, if well discharged, must employ the greatest portion of his time, must. Nevertheless feel that he has to take care of his reputation as an author, advance bis fortunes, and attend to the pub lic and private avocations which his celebrity has opened to him. These hxhaust his energies. He thinks occasionally of his duties as an editor - 7 - procrastinates - to-morrow will give more leisure - an unexpected and indispensable engagement consumes the morrow the month advances the day of publication presses upon him with alarming celerity - he is totally unprepared - he sits down to write; but he must produce some thing worthy of his fammomething that will justify the high expecta tions of the public. In this be either fails or succeeds according as be is in or out of the vein. In fact, a great name does little in advancing the real and substantial interests of a periodical. The anonymous might, in this view, therefore, be preferred. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
