Book The Riverton Minister Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Riverton Minister Classic Reprint written by Martin Post and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Riverton Minister This book contains a narrative drawn from life. Clothed somewhat in the garb of fiction; it is, so far as relates to the character, life-work and spirit of the Riverton Minister, fact. It is the story of a ministry which now is woven into the fabric of imperishable history; a ministry which was abundant in good that can never be lost or overestimated. Obviously, any sketch of an individual, be the place he fills large or small as we measure, is at best but a fraction of his personal record and much more is it but a fraction of the record of his own times. But under the great law of compensation, while such a sketch loses of the general and cosmopolitan, it may gain in the local, personal and human. The writer has been compelled to exclude much material which, although highly important and often germane to this narrative, would, if adequately introduced, withdraw the focus from the one life opened to view in these pages and would multiply the pages into volumes. May this tribute to a consecrated and beautiful life help to make other lives beautiful. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The New Opportunities of the Ministry Classic Reprint

Download or read book The New Opportunities of the Ministry Classic Reprint written by Frederick Henry Lynch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Opportunities of the Ministry Mr. Lynch has amply proved his case, which is to present the opportunities afforded by the modern ministry. Men who want to make the most of their lives must consider the claims in the various branches of religious work. The immense need for leadership in education, in scholarship, in social adjust ment, in missionary enterprise, which (mr. Lynch establishes, itself constitutes a call to some men. Phillips Brooks shortly before his death said that the next twenty years would offer greater Opportunity for the Chris tian minister than any other like period in history. I think this little book proves the contention, presenting some of the needs of our time that must be met if we are to make true progress. Some of the finer spirits who read it will surely learn from it a nobler con ception of personal duty. There are movements of our time which show the essentially religious character of the age, such as the movement towards church unity, the great missionary movement, the international peace movement, which are all Christian in spirit and motive. The whole community also is being pervaded with a new sense of social duty. Nowhere in the world are these and similar movements more living and more wide-spread than in America. No where also are there arrayed greater forces of antagonism and keener problems for our Christian civilization. The largest need of to-day is a supply of men who will grasp the new opportunities of the ministry as a sphere of work and will lead the Church in her ever-widening service. The various types of that service are well brought out in this book, and the urgency of the need is empha sized. We want men who are prepared to undertake some heroic tasks, men of insight and of outlook, of courage and of consecra tion. The broad and forceful appeal of this book will surely not miss its mark. Book A Minister s Reading Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Minister s Reading Classic Reprint written by Owen H. Gates and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Minister's Reading The most obvious difficulty under which a man labors, is lack of time. It is true, a minister is a very busy man, and the demands of a parish take so much of his time that there seems to be very little left to spend upon the direct training of which I speak. But then other men are also busy, and the complaint of lack of time is one that is common to well nigh every ambitious man. Every scholar in the schools feels just as keenly the limitations of his opportunity in this respect. He has not time to follow out one tenth of the subjects that crowd upon his attention. It is a very minute subject that one can finish, and, for that matter, it is a very minute man who thinks he has finished even that. Another difficulty, however, is deeper seated than this lack of time. It is a question of the sphere of thought in which one moves. Thecharacter of the work that engrosses him is such that a minister often feels incapacitated for the work that a school does. This may be true. A school boy can do a school boy's work better than a man in the ministry can do that boy's work. But what both are aiming at is mental growth and increase of power, and the real ques tion is who has the advantage in this respect. There is truly a great difference between the mental work of a boy or man in school and that of a man in the ministry, and no good can come from ignoring the fact. Indeed our whole argu ment is based on the assumption of such a dif ference, actual and proper. And really the ad vantage lies with the grown man and not with the student at school. Let us consider whether this is so. Schooling is good; it is essential to a success ful ministry. No, not quite essential, witness now and then a man who succeeds without it. It is so nearly essential that a man is very foolish who thinks he may be the exception and still win success. Would that every minister had the best schooling that the country affords. If he can not have it for himself, he ought to influence every young man who seeks the ministry to get the best regardless of cost or sacrifice. But after all, schooling is only a means to an end; a good means, but not the only one. Efficiency in ser vice is the goal of our effort, in whatever calling we serve. Education in the true sense, culture of the whole man, power of mind and heart, these are not the same as schooling. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Ministry The object of this book is to furnish some answer to this question; to indicate to priests and preach ers what it is which induces half the population of New York city to lay aside their commercial pur suits and gather in their churches every seventh day; to interpret to themselves the men and women who form these congregations, and explain to them what it is that they are often unconsciously Seeking; and to indicate to those who rarely or never do go to church the advantage which they might secure if they were in this respect to conform to the custom, not only of their fellow countrymen in America, but of their fellow men throughout the world. The Christian minister fulfills a fourfold func tion: he is pastor, administrator, priest, and prophet or preacher. As pastor, he is the personal friend and counselor of his people; as administrator, the executive head of his church, which should be his force as well as his field. These two aspects of his work are not considered in this volume; it is de voted exclusively to a consideration of the minister as priest and prophet. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Minister of Police One evening in May, just at that chill hour when the trees are draping themselves in the muslin of the evening mist, the carriage of Monsieur de Sartines passed the Swiss on guard at the gates of his majesty's palace of Versailles and entered the courtyard. Then, as now, this courtyard, vast, paved with cobblestones big as one's fist, looked on by rows and rows of windows; chill, almost repellent, gave one the impression of a back premises, without any detraction from that other impression of magnificence which the genius of Mansard mixed in the plans, the bricks and the very mortar of his work. The carriage of the minister of police, having crossed the courtyard where other carriages were standing in waiting, stopped at the main entrance of the palace, and Monsieur de Sartines descended.
