Book Shut Your Mouth

Download or read book Shut Your Mouth written by George Catlin and published by . This book was released on 1869 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Catlin discusses how closing one's mouth during sleep and day to day will foster improvement in mental and physical condition. This edition contains all of the original illustrations the author made. Walking among and studying various Native American tribes in the 19th century, the author noticed that many of the elders possessed a serene and well-preserved appearance. The young members of the tribe seemed especially healthy, with an innate resistance to certain illnesses and congenital conditions. Seeing the tribe's members sleeping, he noted that they all did so with closed mouths. Catlin pondered whether this habit contributed to the physical vigor of the people, and investigated further. After venturing back to the towns of the Midwest, he attests to witnessing how terrible many people who had practiced mouth breathing throughout life appeared, and became deeply opposed to its practice. This book details how children and young people can be encouraged against mouth breathing, and notes how different the facial countenance appears between mouth breathing people and nose breathers. Today, the notion that mouth breathing promotes physical ugliness or decrepitude is wholly disavowed as an eccentric idea with no basis in fact. However, sleep researchers have demonstrated that breathing with the mouth open while asleep can result in more snoring and thus a lower quality of sleep and therefore health. Overall, one could venture that Catlin's ideas possess a certain merit, even if his book is an exaggeration. Although primarily known today as a painter and traveller who became an emissary of sorts to the Plains tribes, George Catlin was also an enthusiastic if occasional writer. He admired the Native American peoples for their traditions and distinctive appearance, and took to painting them - his marked talent led to their respect for his gifts, and they duly welcomed him with friendship.

Book The New Life in Christ

Download or read book The New Life in Christ written by Joseph Agar Beet and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Life in Christ: A Study in Personal Religion This volume is a necessary sequel to an earlier one entitled Through Christ to God, in which I endeavored to set forth the historical basis of the Christian faith and hope. The present volume goes on to delineate the goodly structure of the Christian life which rests securely on that firm foundation. In the former volume, what may be called the theological element claimed almost exclusive attention. In the present one, inward spiritual experience and practical life occupy a large place. Each volume needs to be supplemented by the other. For theology is useless unless it bears fruit in righteousness and peace and beneficence; and inward experience is fitful and uncertain unless it rests on reliable external evidence. The New Life in Christ portrayed in this volume, I have endeavored to investigate according to the principles of scientific research. Book Problems of the New Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book Problems of the New Life Classic Reprint written by Morrison I. Swift and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems of the New Life Dr. Ernst Barth has written a book of somewhat general interest. It is a review of the condition of society, and some hard questions about existing institutions are asked in it. The prayer, "Thy Kingdom Come," he says, is offered every Sunday in the churches and daily in the schools and at home. In this manner we have been praying for eighteen hundred years. But when is the Kingdom to come, and where are even the simplest beginnings of it? The thought must give us shame that even in Christian countries the social requirements laid upon men in this petition from Christ have received almost no attention. And there is not the excuse that the powerful of the earth have opposed the religion that offers this prayer; they have long been its protectors. Yet when we look for the fruits of our religion and consider withal the social distress, we must recognize that we have not brought it to much more than an empty, arrogant word-Christianity, and that we are not worthy to bear the name of Christ. Are the causes ascertainable? Consider the poor. What can be hoped of people so oppressed with want and care and labor that they have neither time, repose, nor collectedness to think of the higher problems of humanity? Indeed one who, year in and year out, in the midst of cruel distress, can only think about the scanty support of his family, and who sees his children starve and his wife pine away, will not have much time or strength to labor for the Kingdom of God. Material things engross the attention oft hose who are prosperous; scholars and specialists feel the pressing demands of their profession. Meanwhile human misery, bodily and moral, persists.
