Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New-Jersey Preacher, or Sermons on Plain and Practical Subjects, Vol. 1 Our devout and humble prayer is, that the great Head of the church would give a blessing to this work, that it may serve to promote his glory, and the salvation of our fellow-men. We cannot close these observations without returning our thanks to our Reverend fathers and brethren, who have so promptly complied with our request, in contri buting materials for this volume. If sufficient encouragement be given, to warrant the undertaking, we hope at no distant period to present to the public another volume of the new-jersey Preacher. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons on Practical Subjects, Vol. 1 of 3 The Rev. William Enfield, LL.D. was born at Sudbury in Suffolk, on March 29, 1741, O.S. In common with many other characters of moral and literary excellence, it was his lot to come into the world destitute of the advantages of birth or fortune. His parents were in a humble condition of life, which they rendered respectable by their virtues. His early education was probably on the narrow scale marked out by his circumstances. Book Sermons on Practical Subjects Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sermons on Practical Subjects Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Robert Walker and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons on Practical Subjects, Vol. 1 The Sermons of the Reverend Robert Walker have long and justly enjoyed a large portion of Public approbation. Those which were published in the Author's lifetime acquired a rapid reputation. The Sermons which were added after his death, though deficient perhaps in the last polish of an intended publication, did not detract from his well-earned fame; and the whole Work has steadily maintained the respect which it at first acquired. The present Edition, in three Volumes, contains all the Sermons of Mr. Walker, which have appeared, either during his life or after his death - as well those which were published separately as those which were collected in volumes. Though there were neither striking incidents, nor much variety, in the life of the Author, the following facts will not be unacceptable to his friends. He was born in Canongate, where his father was minister, in 1716. He received a regular education at the University of Edinburgh. Happening to reside for a few months in 1737 with a clergyman in Galloway, he was licensed to preach the gospel by the Presbytery of Kircudbright. In 1738, in consequence of an unanimous call, he was ordained minister of Straiton, within the bounds of the Presbytery of Ayr. He always mentioned this situation with particular satisfaction, and considered the years which he spent at Straiton as among the happiest years of his life. In 1746 he was translated to the Second Charge of South Leith. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Plain Practical Sermons Classic Reprint written by John A. Sheppard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plain Practical Sermons In passing through a dark forest which appears to defy our entering, were we to espy a house nicely laid out, surrounded by all the necessaries of life and happi ness, would we not immediately conclude that man must have made his home there; that though no one be visible about it yet some one must have built it, must even now dwell there, since it is in such good order. Would we ever think of ascribing the origin of that house to chance, or would we dare to assert that this lifeless mass of timber thrown into the shape and form of a house had always been, there? Why, we would be laughed at; we would be called insane; and yet, my friends, will you credit it, there have been men who, looking at this vast Universe, with all its variety of beauty and order, have said that it was the work of chance that it had no author - no intelligent author - though showing efiects which could be produced by no other than an intelligent cause. This theory had its supporters, though shocking to common sense and the reason of mankind. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the challenges and possibilities facing contemporary theological inquiry. Produced in honor of Wallace M. Alston, the book is framed around the areas of discussion that Alston, as director of the Center of Theological Inquiry in Princeton, New Jersey, has diligently placed at the forefront of Christian reflection. Written by some of today's leading Christian pastors and theologians, these insightful chapters probe topics of interest to both the church and the academy. In the first section Denise M. Ackermann, Gerhard Sauter, William Schweiker, Max L. Stackhouse, Michael Welker, and Carver T. Yu examine cultural, social, political, and ethical challenges to Christian theology. In the second section Don Browning, Brian E. Daley, Botond Gal, Niels Henrik Gregersen, John Polkinghorne, and Dirk Smit discuss theology's ongoing dialogue with the sciences and the humanities. In the third section Milner S. Ball, L. Ann Jervis, John S. McClure, Allen C. McSween Jr., Patrick D. Miller, Jrgen Moltmann, Fleming Rutledge, and Virgil Thompson illuminate the role of theology in preaching and teaching. In the fourth and final section of the book David Fergusson, Thomas W. Gillespie, Colin Gunton, Cynthia A. Jarvis, Robert W. Jenson, J. Harold McKeithen Jr., A. J. McKelway, Daniel L. Migliore look at several cutting-edge themes drawn from Reformed and ecumenical theology. Loving God with Our Minds unites voices from the various enterprises of the Center of Theological Inquiry, from different churches, from different theological and academic disciplines, and from different countries across the globe. The book is thus a bouquet of diverse perspectives mirroring what is so central and admirable in Wallace Alston and reflecting what he so desires to see among fellow Christians and pastor-theologians -- loving God not only with our hearts but also with our minds.
