Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This New book offers prescription to cure British-Irish conflict Michael Gillespies thesis offers both an examination and corrective actions DERRY/LONDONDERRY, Northern Ireland Historians have a severe drawback in that they describe but dont prescribe, says author Michael Gillespie. They can describe events and problems but are lax in prescribing remedies for these. Gillespie does more in his new book The Theoretical Solution to the British/Irish Problem Using The General Theory of a Federal Kingdom clearly stated and fully discussed in this Thesis (published by AuthorHouse), which examines the perennial points of conflict between Britain and Ireland. It is the purpose of Gillespies book to revive the concept of a federal kingdom in Ireland as a solution to the British/Irish problem. The kingdom was federal before the Acts of Union in 1707 and 1801. According to the author, the Act of Union which established the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland was an attempt to devise a unitary state for the British Isles in which those islands were ruled directly from Westminster in London and the inhabitants of Ireland were British. This failed dismally and was resisted by federalists in Ireland throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. There is no simple solution to the British/Irish problem and half-measures of the Good Friday and St Andrews agreements at Stormont will fail. The coalition at Stormont of loyalists and Republicans is a constitutional obsenity Gillespie says. You are urged therefore to read this book in full to gain a valuable insight into the complexities of the nuts and bolts of this historic problem and find in the National Government of Ireland Act an approach that can be built in bricks and mortar in Ireland if the will of compromise among politicians and the people can be found to do it.

Book The Irish Problem and How to Solve It

Download or read book The Irish Problem and How to Solve It written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Irish Problem and How to Solve It: An Historical and Criticial Review of the Legislation and Events That Have Led to Irish Difficulties, Including Suggestions for Practical Remedies The following pages are designed to place before the reader a review of the salient features of Irish history from a strictly neutral standpoint, so far as such history bears upon the political complications involved in the relationship of Great Britain and Ireland. Party predilections, together with national aspirations and prejudices, have for many years been, and still remain, so strong, with reference to the subject, that it may appear almost impossible for any one to be really neutral, however much he may profess or desire to be so. It necessarily arises that the very attempt to preserve neutrality may have compelled the treatment of many points with an apparent indulgence on the one hand or with a severity on the other, that can scarcely escape the charge of partizanship, according to the preconceived notions of various readers. The only appeal in such a case is to facts. Irish affairs have been subjected to so much comment of late years that there has scarcely been room for facts. Passions and prejudices have too often kept facts out of sight, and the consequence has been that imagination has carried away the judgment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Irish Problem, Stated and Defined With a Simple and Equitable Solution Ireland, either as invaders or immi grants. The Spanish connection and' intercourse have left enduring traces in the West. On the East coast the Dane has made his mark. Within the Ancient Pale, which included Dublin, and in parts of Tipperary, all racial results of English settlement have not been lost. In Ulster, especially in the North Eastern counties, it is svid ent Where the ancestors of the people came from, and these are only some of the more recent ex amples out of many that might be cited. The names Fitzpatrick, Fitz gerald and De La Poer tell their own tale of Norman French ih vasion from England. In more remote times tradition and ancient records speak of many races that at various periods settled on, the coast and spread into the interior, replacing the earlier occupants, or becoming amalgamated with them. But whether Ireland is a Nation or not, it certainly is a country, and though its inhabitants are of various or' mixed descent, they are assuredly a people. The land has in some mysterious way claimed them all 'as her own, and their offspring as her children, so that without exception, Irishmen born and brought up in the country, are equally distinctively and characteristically Irish, just asthe Cornishman and Northumbrian without traceable racial connection, are both unmistakeably and evident ly English. No difierence of religion on ancestry can alter or affect the law that governs such matters, an unwritten and unformulated law as immutable and unchanging as that of gravitation. The influence of the land even extends to those that have resided in it and sub mitted to its attractive power, for St. Patrick, of Italian descent, born in Scotland and educated in France, died as true an Irishman as ever lived from the love in his heart for the land and its people. Book excerpt: The fighting in Northern Ireland between the Catholic minority and Protestant majority over the future of Ireland's six most northern counties has gone on since the Irish Free State was founded in the early 1920's -- and from well before that if seen in the context of the struggle for Irish independence from Great Britain. It is an old problem with no easy solution and promises to be a constant in the international arena for the foreseeable future. The situation in Northern Ireland has never been a foreign policy priority for the United States. Particularly during the Cold War, there was no reason to use limited diplomatic resources in resolving a regional dispute when there was virtually no risk that the dispute would threaten any U.S. interests.
