Book New Foundations for Asian and Pacific Security

Download or read book New Foundations for Asian and Pacific Security written by Joyce E. Larson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Asian/Pacific area has become a crucial arena of great power rivalry. It is in this region that the interests and ambitions of the United States, the Soviet Union, Japan, and the People's Republic of China most frequently intersect. At least partially in response to these realities, new or strengthened alignments or relationships-most of them tentative and not yet fully formed-are developing in the region. Among these developments are the Sino-American and Sino-Japanese rapprochements, growing unity within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and improved relations between ASEAN and China. Whether these developments will serve to ease significantly the heightened uncertainties, tensions, and strains in the region remains to be seen. For most of the nations of the Asian/Pacific region, the post--World War II decades have been a period of significant economic growth and progress toward the development of viable and stable political institutions. As diplomatic interactions have become ever more complex, and as trade relations among the various countries have expanded, both the economic vitality and the geopolitical importance of the region have gained increasing recognition. Careful consideration of these varied and complex concerns has led a number of observers to conclude that today's interna-tional environment requires greater emphasis on security-related matters in Asia and the Pacific Basin. Acting upon this conviction, the National Strategy Information Center and five cooperating organizations co-sponsored a conference on "New Foundations for Asian and Pacific Security" at Pattaya, Thailand in December 1979. This book contains the addresses, conference papers (some in slightly altered form), and committee reports that constituted the formal substantive aspects of the conference.

Book Sustaining Peace In Asean And The Asia pacific Preventive Diplomacy Measures

Download or read book Sustaining Peace In Asean And The Asia pacific Preventive Diplomacy Measures written by Yanjun Guo and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2022-07-28 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2016, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly and the UN Security Council respectively adopted resolutions on the review of the UN peacebuilding architecture, and the concept of 'sustaining peace' was formally presented. Since then, the 'sustaining peace' agenda has gradually become the core strategy of the peace cause of the UN. The agenda for sustaining peace emphasizes capacity-building for conflict prevention at the regional level.Faced with the escalation of the international security challenge, regional organizations are increasingly playing a prominent role. They have become important participants in the international peace and security agenda by enhancing cooperation with the UN. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), as the centre of regional cooperation processes in the Asia-Pacific, established a series of norms and instruments related to conflict prevention. This book intends to promote discussions on linking conflict prevention and/or preventive diplomacy activities in the region with the sustaining peace agenda promoted by both the ASEAN on a regional scale and the UN on a global scale. In a collaboration between the ASEAN Institute for Peace and Reconciliation (ASEAN-IPR) and China Foreign Affairs University (CFAU), the book provides discussions from the perspective of both Chinese as well as ASEAN scholars on traditional, as well as emerging, topics on sustaining peace, as well as conflict prevention, conflict management, and conflict resolution.

Book Security Arms Control in the North Pacific

Download or read book Security Arms Control in the North Pacific written by A. Mack and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-26 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1988, Security & Arms Control in the North Pacific is the first book to focus on the question of North Pacific arms control. Some chapters examine the problems and prospects for arms control in particular states – the USA, erstwhile USSR, China, Japan, the two Koreas, and Canada; others focus on particular issues- the nuclear infrastructure, controlling the arms trade, confidence building, and naval arms control. A unifying theme of this collection is the tension between military and non-military approaches to security, between threat and reassurance and between deterrence and confidence building. This comprehensive book is a must read for scholars and researchers of security studies, defence studies, international politics, and diplomacy.

Book Contest for the Indo Pacific

Download or read book Contest for the Indo Pacific written by Rory Medcalf and published by La Trobe University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-31 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive guide to the world's most contested region Updated edition covering the strategic impacts of Covid-19, China's economic coercion against Australia, the Afghanistan withdrawal, Joe Biden, the Quad and US-China rivalry. The Indo-Pacific is both a place and an idea. It is the region central to global prosperity and security. It is also a metaphor for collective action. If diplomacy fails, it will be the theatre of the first general war since 1945. But if its future can be secured, the Indo-Pacific will flourish as a shared space, the centre of gravity in a connected world. What we call different parts of the world - Asia, Europe, the Middle East - seems innocuous. But the name of a region is totemic- a mental map that guides the decisions of leaders and the story of international order, war and peace. In recent years, the label 'Indo-Pacific' has gained wide use, including among the leaders of the United States, India, Japan, Australia, Indonesia and France. But what does it really mean? Written by a recognised expert and regional policy insider, Contest for the Indo-Pacific is the definitive guide to tensions in the region. It deftly weaves together history, geopolitics, cartography, military strategy, economics, games and propaganda to address a vital question- how can China's dominance be prevented without war? 'The complexities of our region can easily bewilder those used to the Manichaean simplicity of the Cold War. Rory Medcalf's book is an elegant, keenly insightful tour of the Indo-Pacific's strategic horizon.' -Malcolm Turnbull
