The Philippines is a nation that has experience being ruled by two separate colonial powers, home to a people who have had strong attachments to democratic politics, with a culture that is a rich mix of Chinese, Spanish, and American influences. What are important characteristics of contemporary daily life and culture in the Philippines today? This volume explores the geography, history, and society of this important island nation. Thematic chapters examine topics such as government and politics, history, food, etiquette, education, gender, marriage and sexuality, media and popular culture, music, art, and more. Each chapter opens with a general overview of the topic and is followed by alphabetically arranged entries that home in even closer on the topic. Sidebars and illustrations appear throughout the text, and appendixes cover a glossary, facts and figures, holidays chart, and vignettes that paint a picture of a typical "Day in the Life" of students and adults in the country. A bibliography rounds out the work. Modern Philippines is a comprehensive volume on this leading Southeast Asia island nation.

Book The Outlook for the Philippines Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Outlook for the Philippines Classic Reprint written by Charles Edward Russell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-12 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Outlook for the Philippines The present inhabitants of the southernmost islands of the group seem to have come last. About six hundred years ago a wave of Mohammedanism swept over that part of the world, Mohammedan missionaries going forth with as much zeal, daring and devotion as were ever shown by any of the Christian persuasion, and with other regions they invaded the Philippines. The new-comers of the Sulu chain and the Island of Mindanao yielded to their eloquence or swords or whatever it was that won them converts, but they seem to have made but halting progress to the north. The people they converted in the south came afterward to be known as Moros (or Moors), but this referred to their religion and not, as we now generally assume, to their race. Racially, they were exactly like the Tagalogs, Ilocanos, Ifugaos, Igoro tes and the rest of the Malay immigrants. Book Issues of a New Epoch

Download or read book Issues of a New Epoch written by Joseph Bucklin Bishop and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-14 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Issues of a New Epoch: The Coal Strike Panama Philippines and Cuba As weeks and months went by with one promise of settle ment after another proving a delusion, and with cold weather at hand, this panicky feeling increased until it became a menace to the public safety. For five months the mines had been idle, and while the coal Operators declared that there was no danger of a coal famine, it was within the knowledge of every householder that the famine was already in sight. It was only with extreme difficulty that a single ton of coal could be obtained in New York and other large cities by a small consumer and every householder who had neglected to put in his winter s supply in the Spring found it impossible to obtain it except in small quantities and at steadily rising prices. Many dealers refused to take orders and most of them were entirely without a supply. In the presence of a condition like this it was worse than foolish for the mine owners to persist in their statement, as they did daily, that there was no scarcity, for their denial of what everybody knew to be the actual fact served to arouse popular distrust of them and to aggravate rather than to quiet the general uneasiness. It was almost maddening to tell thousands of people who had been try ing in vain for days and weeks to get coal that there was plenty of coal to be had and they were foolish to think there was not. Book A Short History of the Philippines

Download or read book A Short History of the Philippines written by Prescott F. Jernegan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the Philippines: For Use in Philippine Schools Ten years have passed since this work was adopted for the public schools of the Philip pines. These years, sown with fresh events, new ideals, and many changes in the administration of the government of the Philippines, make necessary a new and completely revised edition of this book. It has been necessary to omit and condense some of the material contained in the former editions, in order to make room for a chapter covering the past decade. The long service which this book has rendered seems to justify the selection of material and method of presentation employed in the former edition. The lapse of years, however, has brought changes which make it desirable to readjust the emphasis placed on both the more remote and the nearer past. The following remarks from the preface to the first edition are still an appropriate introduction to this book.
