Book The New England Drought Study

Download or read book The New England Drought Study written by Charles L. Joyce and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study has traced the water resources planning experience for the metropolitan Boston area from the 17th century to the present in order to investigate how current planning has evolved from seeking large capital intuitive structural solutions to potential water supply (source) shortfalls to more recently favoring less mostly non-structural solutions. The study found that the introduction of citizen participation into the planning process was central to this change. The drought of the 1960s precipitated a debate between the operators of the metropolitan Boston water system and interested citizens and citizens' groups, who were opposed to a structural solution to a perceived supply shortfall. Today, the managers of the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority/Metropolitan District Commission Water System employ a managerial approach called Trigger Planning. Trigger Planning involves systematically monitoring supply and demand while both undertaking the necessary actions to avoid a supply shortfall such as demand management and preparing to undertake structural solutions if they become necessary. Trigger Planning is the subject of a separate study.

Book excerpt: The report documents the consensus of a study team which developed an application of Trigger Planning for enhancing Massachusetts Water Resources Authority's (MWRA) decision making for ensuring that future water sources are adequate to meet the projected demand for Metropolitan Boston, Massachusetts. It is an extension of MWRA's more recently adopted managerial, as opposed to episodic, planning approach to potential shortfalls in supply effected demand management measures that helped to preclude the need for new supplies. Trigger Planning is a systematic procedure for deciding what actions should be taken to prevent supply shortfalls, and in the event of a projected shortfall, what project should be built and when preparation for construction should begin. The final report was issued in October 1994.

This book was released on 1994 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report documents the consensus of a study team which developed an application of Trigger Planning for enhancing MWRA's decision making for ensuring that future water sources are adequate to meet the Projected demand for Metropolitan Boston; Massachusetts. Trigger Planning integrates strategic, drought contingency and emergency planning into a single planning process to the mutual advantage of strategic and drought contingency planning. The process uses the STELLA II software for portraying the water system configuration and functions and a broad range of customized performance measures. STELLA II simulations of the system permits interested citizens and managers alike to view and evaluate the system under different scenarios and performance criteria thereby enhancing their understanding and leading to consensus on the planning and management of the water system.

Book Statistical Methods in Water Resources

Download or read book Statistical Methods in Water Resources written by D.R. Helsel and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1993-03-03 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data on water quality and other environmental issues are being collected at an ever-increasing rate. In the past, however, the techniques used by scientists to interpret this data have not progressed as quickly. This is a book of modern statistical methods for analysis of practical problems in water quality and water resources. The last fifteen years have seen major advances in the fields of exploratory data analysis (EDA) and robust statistical methods. The 'real-life' characteristics of environmental data tend to drive analysis towards the use of these methods. These advances are presented in a practical and relevant format. Alternate methods are compared, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of each as applied to environmental data. Techniques for trend analysis and dealing with water below the detection limit are topics covered, which are of great interest to consultants in water-quality and hydrology, scientists in state, provincial and federal water resources, and geological survey agencies. The practising water resources scientist will find the worked examples using actual field data from case studies of environmental problems, of real value. Exercises at the end of each chapter enable the mechanics of the methodological process to be fully understood, with data sets included on diskette for easy use. The result is a book that is both up-to-date and immediately relevant to ongoing work in the environmental and water sciences.

This book was released on 2009-04-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teleconnections is a central concept in the scientific search for an improved understanding of potential linkages between weather and climate anomalies that occur over relatively large distances. The editors of this 1991 volume brought together contributions from experts in the field, which together provide a comprehensive review of this important subject. This book will be of importance to all professional scientists and researchers in climatology and meteorology, particularly those concerned with air-sea interactions and their environmental impacts and the physical basis for and societal responses to forecasting. Graduate students in environmental science, meteorology and climate-related impact assessments will also find the book useful.

Book Drought and Drought Mitigation in Europe

Download or read book Drought and Drought Mitigation in Europe written by Jürgen V. Vogt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drought is one of the major natural hazards, resulting in significant economic, social, and environmental costs. In Europe, water shortage is an important problem in many regions. However, despite the increasing awareness of this hazard, there is no European drought policy and institutional frameworks to cope with drought situations are only weakly developed. This book is dedicated to furthering our understanding of the drought problem in Europe and to discussing policy and management options to mitigate its impacts. It covers aspects from the detection of water stress to the planning of mitigation strategies. The contributions are written by recognised experts in their field and represent a unique collection of papers on the topic. Audience: The book will be of benefit to scientists, managers, and politicians involved in problems related to water management, risk assessment, and spatial planning. Students in Earth Sciences, especially in geography, climatology, hydrology, and agriculture, will find useful material in this collection of papers.
