Book excerpt: It should be pointed out that this book does not attempt to deal with abnormal phenomena which occur spontaneously-with apparitions or forms resembling the dead coming unsought for, such as have been recorded in all ages of the world's history. It will be seen that such phenomena have nothing in common and cannot be said to be identical with those which are invoked and induced, for which a circle has to be formed, for which a medium is employed, and for which favorable conditions have to be created. It is with such phenomena alone that this book deals.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Black Magic: And the Truth About the Ouija-Board Of some member of a family or community has been intimated to some distant member by an ap parently objective though fugitive appearance of the deceased. We have records of phenomena of this kind in the history of the lives of the saints and martyrs, and the Catholic Church has never denied their reality. On the con trary, she has maintained that reality when a skeptical world denied and ridiculed them. But she has also maintained that, since such phe nomena may emanate from different sources, and since those produced by the act of God may be imitated by the enemy of God, it is not possible to speak dogmatically respecting them. She has, as a rule, tested their aim and character by the Apostolic test (see p. Or by their effects, moral and splritual, upon the life of the per cipient. She - has always discouraged any seek ing after them, and any attempt to regard their occurrence as an 1ndication of a peculiar state of sanctity. In any case, it will be seen that such phenomena have nothing in common and can not be said to be identical with those which are invoked and induced, for which a circle has to be formed, for which a medium is employed, and for which favorable conditions have to be cre ated. It is with such phenomena alone that this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demons in the USA argues that the discourse on the demonic that developed in the nineteenth century continues to exert a powerful hold over the American spiritual imagination. The book begins by tracing the conservative Christian encounter with Spiritualism in the nineteenth century and the mode of thinking about the demonic which developed. As Spiritualism’s core principles reappeared in the New Age, Christian interlocutors once more drew on this "anti-Spiritualist" paradigm to condemn the movement. This condemnation is absorbed by and amplified through the film The Exorcist. The author considers how the success of the film disseminates the anti-Spiritualist paradigm in surprising ways, entangling it with entertainment, science, and politics such that it influences psychology, the Satanic Panic of the 1980s, and the contemporary QAnon movement. This entanglement points to the broader argument of the work: While we may wish to think of a film as "entertainment" (and thus, having no bearing on "reality") or demonic material as "religious" (and thus exempt from categories like "politics" or "science"), the truth is that categories are not so easily separated. The author contends that the need to enforce the boundaries of such categories (and the failure to do so) is a hallmark of the intellectual construct of modernity, and that those who believe in demons in the contemporary United States are surprisingly modern in their views. The book grounds the importance of media to the twentieth-and twenty-first- century religious experience, arguing that the United States of today would not be possible without The Exorcist and its products. Demons in the USA will be of particular interest to scholars dealing with religion in America, those with a focus on religion and film, or those involved with contemporary demonology.

Book A History of Exorcism in Catholic Christianity

Download or read book A History of Exorcism in Catholic Christianity written by Francis Young and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-27 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the development of exorcism in Catholic Christianity from the fourth century to the present day, and seeks to explain why exorcism is still so much in demand. This is the first work in English to trace the development of the liturgy, practice and authorisation of exorcisms in Latin Christianity. The rite of exorcism, and the claim by Roman Catholic priests to be able to drive demons from the possessed, remains an enduring source of popular fascination, but the origins and history of this controversial rite have been little explored. Arguing that belief in the need for exorcism typically re-emerges at periods of crisis for the church, Francis Young explores the shifting boundaries between authorised exorcisms and unauthorised magic throughout Christian history, from Augustine of Hippo to Pope Francis. This book offers the historical background to – and suggests reasons for – the current resurgence of exorcism in the global Catholic Church.

Book Terrifying Texts

Download or read book Terrifying Texts written by Cynthia J. Miller and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2018-08-31 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Faust (1926) to The Babadook (2014), books have been featured in horror films as warnings, gateways, prisons and manifestations of the monstrous. Ancient grimoires such as the Necronomicon serve as timeless vessels of knowledge beyond human comprehension, while runes, summoning diaries, and spell books offer their readers access to the powers of the supernatural--but at what cost? This collection of new essays examines nearly a century of genre horror in which on-screen texts drive and shape their narratives, sometimes unnoticed. The contributors explore American films like The Evil Dead (1981), The Prophecy (1995) and It Follows (2014), as well as such international films as Eric Valette's Malefique (2002), Paco Cabeza's The Appeared (2007) and Lucio Fulci's The Beyond (1981).
