Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Biology, or the True Science of Life It does not matter if this foliage reappears with certain changes of form and color. Truth may be all the more acceptable for its varying manifesta tions, and may thereby attract more attention from those who have become almost unconscious of its existence. If we give an old truth a new dress, we do so, only as a courteous plucking of the robes of the passer-by. We would not mislead, but would only awaken the mind to a consciousness of ever-pres ent truth, which from its very familiarity has ceased to make any impression. Book The Wonder of Life Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wonder of Life HE aim of this book is to illustrate the ever-growing wonder of animated Nature - with especial reference to animal life. It is an unconventional introduction to Natural History and Biology, taking broad views of the actual lives of living creatures and working inwards. It is therefore complementary to other books which begin with the minute analysis of the individual. The author hopes that it may be found useful in nature-study as a continuation of his Biology of the Seasons, and that teachers of Zoology may recommend it to their students as an introduction to the study of some of the problems for the discussion of which our crowded curricula leave little time. Book The Origin and Nature of Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Origin and Nature of Life Classic Reprint written by Benjamin Moore and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin and Nature of Life Whether the human mind be dealing with the problems of some branch of natural science, or constructing systems of ethics, philosophy, or religion, it is equally essential to clothe its thoughts in language derived from those things in the material world which appeal to the human senses. The extent and accuracy of our knowledge of external phenomena increase all the time, and it is this increase of knowledge which makes all science progressive. True religion apart from dogma is the sublimed essence of the knowledge of the highest things in the world, and in itself is never opposed to natural science; but when there is error in men's conceptions of religion or of natural science, then there may for a time appear to be a conflict. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Life Of Life in 1872 gave rise to a good deal Of criticism, and was followed by much controversy for a few years. The criticism concerned both sections Of the work - that dealing with Heterogenesis, as well as the portion in which I endeavoured to establish the reality Of Archebiosis, though there was controversy only in regard to the latter subject. The absence Of controversy about Heterogenesis was due to the fact that I made no reply whatever to any Of the criticisms concerning this section Of my book. It was a kind Of subject which did not seem open to profitable discussion, especially with persons who declined to attempt to repeat the observations in question. Book Life Itself

  • Pages : 324 pages

Download or read book Life Itself written by Robert Rosen and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why are living things alive? As a theoretical biologist, Robert Rosen saw this as the most fundamental of all questions-and yet it had never been answered satisfactorily by science. The answers to this question would allow humanity to make an enormous leap forward in our understanding of the principles at work in our world. For centuries, it was believed that the only scientific approach to the question "What is life?" must proceed from the Cartesian metaphor (organism as machine). Classical approaches in science, which also borrow heavily from Newtonian mechanics, are based on a process called "reductionism." The thinking was that we can better learn about an intricate, complicated system (like an organism) if we take it apart, study the components, and then reconstruct the system-thereby gaining an understanding of the whole. However, Rosen argues that reductionism does not work in biology and ignores the complexity of organisms. Life Itself, a landmark work, represents the scientific and intellectual journey that led Rosen to question reductionism and develop new scientific approaches to understanding the nature of life. Ultimately, Rosen proposes an answer to the original question about the causal basis of life in organisms. He asserts that renouncing the mechanistic and reductionistic paradigm does not mean abandoning science. Instead, Rosen offers an alternate paradigm for science that takes into account the relational impacts of organization in natural systems and is based on organized matter rather than on particulate matter alone. Central to Rosen's work is the idea of a "complex system," defined as any system that cannot be fully understood by reducing it to its parts. In this sense, complexity refers to the causal impact of organization on the system as a whole. Since both the atom and the organism can be seen to fit that description, Rosen asserts that complex organization is a general feature not just of the biosphere on Earth-but of the universe itself.
