Book excerpt: The Nevada Test Site (NTS) is a large (1,350 square miles) secure site currently operated by National Security Technologies, LLC (NSTec), for the U.S. Department of Energy and was established in 1951 to provide a venue for testing nuclear weapons. Three areas with a variety of elevation and geological parameters were used for testing, but the largest number of tests was in Yucca Flat. The Yucca Flat area is approximately 5 miles wide and 20 miles long and approximately 460 subsidence craters resulted from testing in this area. The Sedan crater displaced approximately 12 million tons of earth and is the largest of these craters at 1,280 feet across and 320 feet deep. The profiles of Sedan and the other craters offer a wide variety of shapes and depths that are ideally suited for lunar analog testing.

Covering approximately 680 square miles, the Nevada National Security Site, formerly known as the Nevada Test Site, was the primary testing location of American nuclear devices from 1951 to 1992; 1,021 announced nuclear tests occurred there, 921 of which were underground. The site, which is closed to the public, including its airspace, contains 28 areas, 1,100 buildings, 400 miles of paved roads, 300 miles of unpaved roads, 10 heliports, and two airstrips. For four decades, the test site's primary purpose was developmental testing of nuclear explosives. Atmospheric tests conducted over Yucca Flat and Frenchman Flat between 1951 and 1962 involved thousands of Army troops and Marines simulating nuclear battlefield conditions. Civil defense planners studied blast and radiation effects and evaluated bomb shelter designs. Testing moved underground in 1963 to eliminate radioactive fallout. Other projects at the NTS included nuclear rocket engine development for space travel, training for NASA's Apollo astronauts, excavation experiments, radioactive waste storage studies, and aircraft testing. Since the last underground nuclear test in 1992, this geographically diverse testing and training complex north of Las Vegas--known since 2010 as the Nevada National Security Site--has been used to support nuclear stockpile stewardship and as a unique outdoor laboratory for government and industry research and development efforts.

Book excerpt: The United States proposes to store high level nuclear wastes underground; a site at Yucca Mountain in southern Nevada is currently under evaluation. A major concern is that radioactive materials may dissolve in the groundwater and be transported to the accessible environment. At the Nevada Test Site (NTS) adjacent to Yucca Mountain underground nuclear tests have been conducted for over 30 years. Radionuclides (unreacted fissile material, activation products, fission products) from these tests remain underground with no confinement by engineered barriers. The US Department of Energy has supported studies since 1973 designed to measure the distribution of these radionuclides and to evaluate the processes by which they might be transported by groundwater. The authors describe here some of what they have learned about how radionuclides are distributed around nuclear test cavities and how they interact with groundwater.

They made this work possible and helped make it a better and more complete history. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Field Trip Guidebooks Series, Volume 186. The Nevada Test Site (NTS) was established on December 18, 1950, to provide an area for continental testing of nuclear devices. In January of 1951, testing began with an airdrop into Frenchman Flat in conjunction with Operation Ranger. In addition to airdrops, above ground testing included surface detonations, tower shots, and balloon suspensions. Underground testing began in 1957, and since 1963, all events have been buried in large-diameter drill holes or tunnels. Geologists from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) mapped much of the NTS region between 1960 and 1965. These maps formed the basis for subsequent studies by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, and the USGS. A good understanding of the stratigraphy, structure, geochemistry, and physical properties of the rocks is essential for containment of underground nuclear tests. Many of the recent geologic studies at NTS, particularly in Yucca Flat, Pahute Mesa, and Mid Valley, are aimed at understanding subsurface geology to help ensure complete containment. The potential nuclear waste site at Yucca Mountain is located approximately 100 miles (160 km) by road northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada, and situated on land controlled by three Federal agencies; the Bureau of Land Management, the Department of Energy (Nevada Test Site), and the U.S. Air Force (Nellis Air Force Range).
