Download or read book The Neurospora Compendium written by David D. Perkins and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2000-10-11 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fungi have been major players in the molecular revolution that has transformed biology. Because they can be manipulated as microorganisms, yeast and Neurospora provide information that is difficult to acquire with plants and animals, and experimental findings with fungi often throw light on corresponding processes in plants and animals. The filamentous fungus Neurospora crassa has become a valuable model organism because of its favorable features for genetic analysis and because of the vast store of information that has been acquired during 75 years of research. This compendium provides researchers and students with a concise account of current knowledge about the genes and genome of Neurospora, setting the stage for research that will follow completion of the genome sequence. This book, which is fully documented and abundantly illustrated, will be an indispensable tool in any laboratory that uses fungi for research in molecular genetics, classical genetics, developmental genetics, or cell biology. Molecular, genetic, and phenotypic information for over 1000 nuclear genes Genetic maps Linkage group assignments for 1000 loci 2300 references, 68 figures Guide to electronic and other sources of information Summary information on the mitochondrial genome cDNAs identified from different stages of life Classical, cytogenetic, and molecular data, anticipating completion of the genome sequence

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will serve as the definitive reference work on the basic physiology, biochemistry, development, genetics, and molecular biology of Neurospora, together with a description of basic laboratory methods. Among the filamentous fungi, Neurospora is a basic model organism, used initially in the establishment of the one-gene, one-enzyme principle, and it has become a favored research organism in a variety of biological problems since that time. Until now, there has been no standard guide to the organism. The book reviews early research since 1927 and describes the current state of the major research programs now being pursued. Each chapter includes detailed literature references for the scholar and experimentalist. Both researchers in the filamentous fungi and biologists requiring information about Neurospora will find this an invaluable resource because it gathers 75 years of scattered research literature into a coherent account.

Download or read book Cell Cell Channels written by František Baluška and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-08-10 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: he biological sciences are dominated by the idea that cells are the functionally autonomous, physically separated, discrete units of life. TThis concept was propounded in the 19th century by discoveries of the cellular structuring of both plants and animals. Moreover, the ap parent autonomy of unicellular eukaryotes, as well as the cellular basis of the mammalian brain (an organ whose anatomy for a long while defied attempts to validate the idea of the cellular nature of its neurons), seemed to provide the final conclusive evidence for the completeness of *cell theory', a theory which has persisted in an almost dogmatic form up to the present day. However, it is very obvious that there are numerous observations which indicate that it is not the cells which serve as the basic units of biological life but that this property falls to some other, subcellular assemblage. To deal with this intricate problem concerning the fundamental unit of living matter, we proposed the so-called Cell Body concept which, in fact, devel ops an exceedingly original idea proposed by Julius Sachs at the end of the 19th century. In the case of eukaryotic cells, DNA-enriched nuclei are intimately associated with a microtubular cytoskeleton. In this configuration—as a Cell Body—these two items comprise the fundamental functional and struc tural unit of eukaryotic living matter. The Cell Body seems to be inherent to all cells in all organisms.

Book Genetic Theory and Analysis

Download or read book Genetic Theory and Analysis written by Danny E. Miller and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2023-07-25 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: GENETIC THEORY AND ANALYSIS Understand and apply what drives change of characteristic genetic traits and heredity Genetics is the study of how traits are passed from parents to their offspring and how the variation in those traits affects the development and health of the organism. Investigating how these traits affect the organism involves a diverse set of approaches and tools, including genetic screens, DNA and RNA sequencing, mapping, and methods to understand the structure and function of proteins. Thus, there is a need for a textbook that provides a broad overview of these methods. Genetic Theory and Analysis meets this need by describing key approaches and methods in genetic analysis through a historical lens. Focusing on the five basic principles underlying the field—mutation, complementation, recombination, segregation, and regulation—it identifies the full suite of tests and methodologies available to the geneticist in an age of flourishing genetic and genomic research. This second edition of the text has been updated to reflect recent advances and increase accessibility to advanced undergraduate students. Genetic Theory and Analysis, 2nd edition readers will also find: Detailed treatment of subjects including mutagenesis, meiosis, complementation, suppression, and more Updated discussion of epistasis, mosaic analysis, RNAi, genome sequencing, and more Appendices discussing model organisms, genetic fine-structure analysis, and tetrad analysis Genetic Theory and Analysis is ideal for both graduate students and advanced undergraduates undertaking courses in genetics, genetic engineering, and computational biology.
