Book The Networked Financier

Download or read book The Networked Financier written by David R. Meyer and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-09-07 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Networked Financier offers an explanation of the individual network behaviour of major financiers across diverse sectors and leading global financial centres. It argues that experienced financiers leverage their social capital to operate as 'networked financiers'. The few prior studies of the network behavior of individual financiers typically focus on one sector or on one financial centre. This book draws on Meyer's unique database of digitally recorded personal interviews with 167 financiers in London, Zurich, New York, Hong Kong, Singapore, Shanghai, Beijing, and Mumbai. They work in the sectors of corporate and investment banking, hedge funds, private equity, venture capital, fund management, real estate investment, insurance, and private banking. Extensive quotes are the mechanism for financiers to explain how they behave. Social network theory provides the lens for interpreting that behavior. The results demonstrate the validity of the theory for explaining financier network behavior. The book also contributes to a practical understanding of how financiers behave in networks because the interviewees explain their behaviour in their own words. By revealing the network behavior of leading financiers in major global business centres, the book provides a template about how sophisticated financiers behave.

Download or read book Financier The Biography of Andre Meyer written by Cary Reich and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1998-02-23 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A first-rate biography of an extraordinary man." --Andrew Tobias. David Rockefeller once deemed André Meyer "the most creative financial genius of our time in the investment banking world." André Meyer was also known as "The Picasso of Banking" and "The Incomparable Investor," but probably his most notable achievement was his ability to completely and single-handedly revitalize American business after World War II. Cary Reich presents an illuminating portrait of this ferociously energetic, charming, and ruthless businessman who was a trusted advisor of the Kennedys and an intimate of William Paley and Katherine Graham. Reich goes into detail about Meyer's immigration from Nazi-occupied France, his prowess on the Monopoly board of business, and some of Meyer's lasting business legacies--now household names--including Avis and Holiday Inn. * Includes a new foreword by Cary Reich. Cary Reich (New York, New York) is the former executive editor of Institutional Investor. His most recent book, The Life of Nelson A. Rockefeller, was a finalist for the National Book Award. Mr. Reich is the recipient of numerous journalism awards, including the Overseas Press Award and the John Hancock Award for Excellence in Business and Financial Journalism.

Book excerpt: In this biography, the acclaimed author of Sons of Providence, winner of the 2007 George Wash- ington Book Prize, recovers an immensely important part of the founding drama of the country in the story of Robert Morris, the man who financed Washington’s armies and the American Revolution. Morris started life in the colonies as an apprentice in a counting house. By the time of the Revolution he was a rich man, a commercial and social leader in Philadelphia. He organized a clandestine trading network to arm the American rebels, joined the Second Continental Congress, and financed George Washington’s two crucial victories—Valley Forge and the culminating battle at Yorktown that defeated Cornwallis and ended the war. The leader of a faction that included Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and Washington, Morris ran the executive branches of the revolutionary government for years. He was a man of prodigious energy and adroit management skills and was the most successful businessman on the continent. He laid the foundation for public credit and free capital markets that helped make America a global economic leader. But he incurred powerful enemies who considered his wealth and influence a danger to public "virtue" in a democratic society. After public service, he gambled on land speculations that went bad, and landed in debtors prison, where George Washington, his loyal friend, visited him. This once wealthy and powerful man ended his life in modest circumstances, but Rappleye restores his place as a patriot and an immensely important founding father.
