And thou wast but a breathing May Embodied by delicious dreams, And drifted o'er my wandering way On fancy's swift and shining streams. Thine eyes were only violets, Thy lips but buds of crimson bloom, Thy hair, coiled sunshine--vain regrets! Thy soul, a brief perfume. And when the time of mists and chills Fell where the sweet wild roses grew, And took them from the shadowy hills, It took my lovely vision too; And when I came again to find The charm which used to fill the air, A sorrow struck me mute and blind--Thou wast not anywhere! Yet something met me in thy place, Something, they said, with looks like thine, With tresses full of golden grace And lips flush'd red with beauty's wine; A DISENCHANTMENT. With voice of silvery swells and falls And dreamy eyes still sweetly blue--But, then, the reptile's nature crawls Beneath the rainbow's hue. Woman, all things below, above, Look pale and drear and glimmering now, For I have loved thee with a love Whose passionate deeps such things as thou May never sound. And, with a moan, The chill'd tide of that love has rolled Above my heart, and made it stone, And oh, so cold, so cold! I saw thee by a magic lamp Whose warm and gorgeous blaze is gone, And o'er me shivers, gray and damp, The dimness of the real's dawn. Oh, I am like to one who stands Where late a vision smiled in air, And murmurs, with outstretching hands, "Where is my Angel--where?" A CHAIN FROM VENICE. She stretches dimpled arms of snow; A glad smile lights her baby eyes: My little beauty, would you know The story of your shining prize? It is a poet's golden thought Of you, that glitters like your hair, Of rich Venetian sunlight wrought Far in the South's enchanted air. Ah, if you stay from Heaven to learn The years...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Thicket opens into intimate encounters with the more-than-human world—rivers, birds, stones—and with a “you” that is not a person, necessarily, but also not not a person: maybe God, maybe an aspect of the self, maybe neither or both. Often speaking of/to the small or overlooked (weeds by a roadside, an abandoned silo), the poems orient themselves toward edges, transitional spaces like the one where fields shift into woods. Where does one body stop? The Thicket takes an interest in becoming, one thing flowing into something else. Excerpt from “At Cape Henlopen” All night wind insists in the trees, its unsteady hush funneling us down into sleep under the tender shelter the oaks, even leafless, make—all night their trunks creak and sigh and speak. Speak to me—I think the word protect until its edges dissolve, inside the tent that wraps us like another, thinner skin, rocked and chastened by the wind that doesn’t cease . . .

Book excerpt: In the bold tradition of the “Misty Poets,” Ha Jin confronts China’s fraught political history while paying tribute to its rich culture and landscape. The poems of A Distant Center speak in a voice that is steady and direct, balancing contemplative longing with sober warnings from a writer who has confronted the traumas of censorship and state violence. With unadorned language and epigrammatic wit, Jin conjures scenes that encompass the personal, historical, romantic, and environmental, interrogating conceptions of foreignness and national identity as they appear and seep into everyday interactions and being. These are poems that offer solace in times of political reaction and uncertainty. Jin’s voice is wise, comforting, and imploring; his words are necessary and his lessons are invaluable. Question your place in the world—do not be complacent—look for strength and hope in every nook: “Keep in mind the meaning of / your existence: wherever you land, / your footprints will become milestones.”

Book Who Killed American Poetry

Download or read book Who Killed American Poetry written by Karen L. Kilcup and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2019-10-25 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the 19th century, American poetry was a profoundly populist literary form. It circulated in New England magazines and Southern newspapers; it was read aloud in taverns, homes, and schools across the country. Antebellum reviewers envisioned poetry as the touchstone democratic genre, and their Civil War–era counterparts celebrated its motivating power, singing poems on battlefields. Following the war, however, as criticism grew more professionalized and American literature emerged as an academic subject, reviewers increasingly elevated difficult, dispassionate writing and elite readers over their supposedly common counterparts, thereby separating “authentic” poetry for intellectuals from “popular” poetry for everyone else.\ Conceptually and methodologically unique among studies of 19th-century American poetry, Who Killed American Poetry? not only charts changing attitudes toward American poetry, but also applies these ideas to the work of representative individual poets. Closely analyzing hundreds of reviews and critical essays, Karen L. Kilcup tracks the century’s developing aesthetic standards and highlights the different criteria reviewers used to assess poetry based on poets’ class, gender, ethnicity, and location. She shows that, as early as the 1820s, critics began to marginalize some kinds of emotional American poetry, a shift many scholars have attributed primarily to the late-century emergence of affectively restrained modernist ideals. Mapping this literary critical history enables us to more readily apprehend poetry’s status in American culture—both in the past and present—and encourages us to scrutinize the standards of academic criticism that underwrite contemporary aesthetics and continue to constrain poetry’s appeal. Who American Killed Poetry? enlarges our understanding of American culture over the past two hundred years and will interest scholars in literary studies, historical poetics, American studies, gender studies, canon criticism, genre studies, the history of criticism, and affect studies. It will also appeal to poetry readers and those who enjoy reading about American cultural history.
