Book The Neptune Factor

Download or read book The Neptune Factor written by Nicholas A. Lambert and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2024-02-15 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Neptune Factor is the biography of an idea—the concept of “Sea Power,” a term first coined by Capt. A.T. Mahan and the core thread of his life’s work. His central argument was that the outcome of rivalries on the seas have decisively shaped the course of modern history. Although Mahan’s scholarship has long been seen as foundational to all systematic study of naval power, Neptune Factor is the first attempt to explain how Mahan’s definition of sea power shifted over time. Far from presenting sea power in terms of combat, as often thought, Mahan conceptualized it in terms of economics. Proceeding from the conviction that international trade carried across the world’s oceans was the single greatest driver of national wealth (and thus power) in history, Mahan explained sea power in terms of regulating access to ‘the common’ and influencing the flows of trans-oceanic trade. A nation possessing sea power could not only safeguard its own trade and that of its allies but might also endeavor to deny access to the common to its enemies and competitors. A pioneering student of what is now referred to as the first era of globalization, lasting from the late nineteenth century until the First World War, Mahan also identified the growing dependence of national economies upon uninterrupted access to an interconnected global trading system. Put simply, access to ‘the common’ was essential to the economic and political stability of advanced societies. This growing dependence, Mahan thought, increased rather than decreased the potency of sea power. Understanding the critical relationship between navies and international economics is not the only reason why Mahan’s ideas remain—or rather have once again become—so important. He wrote in, and of, a multi-polar world, when the reigning hegemon faced new challenges, and confusion and uncertainty reigned as the result of rapid technological change and profound social upheaval. Mahan believed that the U.S. Navy owed the American people a compelling explanation of why it deserved their support—and their money. His extensive, deeply informed, and highly sophisticated body of work on sea power constituted his attempt to supply such an explanation. Mahan remains as relevant—and needed—today as he was more than a century ago.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You Can Predict the Future Throughout the centuries the future has been seen in dreams, in visions, and by seers. But you don't have to be a prophet or a visionary to predict what the future holds. Now, Ingo Swann explains how to understand and use the future-predicting ability that lies within. He identifies the different ways the future is revealed: Spontaneous forewarnings during dreams Spontaneous alerts that happen when awake Forewarnings and alerts communally experienced by numbers of people while sleeping or while awake Consciously controlled future-seeing achieved by seers Ingo Swann also presents fascinating, documented examples of prophecies that came true, ranging from those that foresaw the sinking of the Titanic to his own prediction of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Your Nostradamus Factor explains how you can develop your ability to foresee the future by: • Overcoming blocks to future-seeing • Tracking a particular subject and testing your predictions • Using astrology to help see the future, and • Paying close attention to your dreams. With the millennium right around the corner, Swann also offers startling predictions for the future of the environment, the economy, science, and society. (originally published in 1993)

Book You Ain t Heard Nothin Yet

Download or read book You Ain t Heard Nothin Yet written by James Bawden and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2017-08-23 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journalists James Bawden and Ron Miller spent their careers interviewing the greatest stars of Hollywood's golden age. They visited Lee Marvin at home and politely admired his fishing trophies, chatted with Janet Leigh while a young Jamie Lee Curtis played, and even made Elizabeth Taylor laugh out loud. In You Ain't Heard Nothin' Yet, Bawden and Miller return with a new collection of rare interviews with iconic film stars including Henry Fonda, Esther Williams, Buster Keaton, Maureen O'Sullivan, Walter Pidgeon, and many more. The book is filled with humorous anecdotes and incredible behind-the-scenes stories. For instance, Bette Davis reflects that she and Katharine Hepburn were both considered for the role of Scarlett O'Hara but neither was "gorgeous enough" for the part; Janet Leigh analyzes the famous shower scene in Psycho (1960), which was shot in seven days and gave the actress nightmares for years; and Jimmy Stewart describes Alfred Hitchcock as a "strange, roly-poly man, interested only in blondes and murder." Popular horror film stars from Lon Chaney Jr. to Boris Karloff and Vincent Price are also featured in a special "movie monsters" section. With first-person accounts of Hollywood life from some of the most distinguished luminaries in the history of American cinema, this entertaining book will delight classic movie fans.

Book Cosmic Weather Report

Download or read book Cosmic Weather Report written by Mark Borax and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2011-06-28 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a planet facing environmental and geopolitical catastrophes on every continent, the idea that human beings need to “evolve or die” is gaining currency on an almost daily basis. Cosmic Weather Report tackles the personal and collective obstacles to world transformation head-on, inspiring readers to rethink the whole purpose of humankind, and change their lives—and the course of the planet’s future—from within. In this book, eminent astrologers Mark Borax and Ellias Lonsdale pool their talents to explore what we are emerging from—“the age we need to leave behind”—and what we are approaching—“the age we’re on the verge of creating.” Readers are encouraged to see how the greatest difficulties can be seized for optimal growth. While Cosmic Weather Report is not an astrology book per se, it uses astrological concepts, which can also be read as metaphors to convey the universal scale of the transformations taking place. Preserving the lecture format and question-and-answer dialogue of Lonsdale and Borax’s famed mystery school, the authors usher readers into an exciting classroom of evolution in which students get to quiz the teachers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Future historians of the horror genre who ignore Nowell's insights into a major transitional period in the relationship between independent producers and the major studios will do so at their own peril." Kevin Heffernan, author of Ghouls, Gimmicks and Gold: Horror Films and the American Movie Business, 1953-1968 "Challenging numerous myths along the way, this impeccably researched study sheds new light not only on slasher films and cycles, but on the nature, structure and practices of independent production in North America in the 1970s and 1980s. Highly recommended." Professor Steve Neale, University of Exeten "Meticulously researched and forcefully argued... Offers new insights into how films, filmmaking and film marketing operated in the North American film industry of the 1970s and early 1980s." Peter Kramer, University of East Anglia, UK, author of The New Hollywood (2005) Scholars have consistently applied psychoanalytic models to representations of gender in early teen slasher films in order to claim that these were formulaic. excessively violent exploitation films, fashioned to satisfy the misogynist fantasies of teenage boys and grind house patrons. However, by examining the commercial logic, strategies and objectives of the American and Canadian independents that produced the films and the companies that distributed them in the US. Blood Money demonstrates that filmmakers and marketers actually went to extraordinary lengths to make early teen slashers attractive to female youth, to minimize displays of violence, gore and suffering and to invite comparisons to a wide range of post-classical Hollywood's biggest hits---including Love Story and Saturday Night Fever. Richard Nowell is a film scholar who has lectured at leading universities in the UK and Germany. His work can also be seen in Cinema Journal the Journal of Film and Video, and Post Script.
