Download or read book Victorian Fiction Beyond the Canon written by Daragh Downes and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-15 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about selected Victorian texts and authors that in many cases have never before been subject to sustained scholarly attention. Taking inspiration from the pioneeringly capacious approach to the hidden hinterland of Victorian fiction adopted by scholars like John Sutherland and Franco Moretti, this energetically revisionist volume takes advantage of recent large-scale digitisation projects that allow unprecedented access to hitherto neglected literary texts and archives. Blending lively critical engagement with individual texts and close attention to often surprising trends in the production and reception of prose fiction across the Victorian era, this book will be of use to anyone interested in re-evaluating the received meta-narratives of Victorian literary history. With an afterword by John Sutherland

Download or read book Politics and Culture in Victorian Britain written by Peter Ghosh and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-03-09 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last twenty years one of the classical arenas for British historical writing - the politics of Victorian Britain - has ceased to be an obvious or self-evidently important subject. Facing up to this challenge, the historians who have contributed to this volume explore central aspects of that history. They continue to uphold the centrality of politics to Victorian Britain, but suggest that politics must be viewed more broadly, as a concern pervading almost all spheres of life, just as Victorians themselves would have done. In this way politics penetrates into Victorian culture. 'Politics' can lead us into the ideas governing political action itself; political ideas; international relations; the eduction of men and women; the writing of history and of literature; engagement with past political theorists; and the ideas behind professionalization. Such are some of the themes taken up here. The specific occasion for these essays was as a tribute to the memory of the late Colin Matthew, one of the most eminent recent historians of Victorian Britain, who was himself determined to uphold the contemporary relevance of Victorian political tradition, and to explore the interface between 'politics' and 'culture'. Reflection on his intellectual achievement is a second distinctive component of this book.

Download or read book A Poetics of Jesus written by Jeffrey F. Keuss and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2002: A Poetics of Jesus explores the act of writing within and between the boundaries of 19th century biblical criticism and fiction. Reflecting on the work of Christian poetics after Augustine to Baur, Feuerbach, Friedrich Strauss and Victorian novelists of the eighteenth and nineteenth century, this book breaks new ground in juxtaposing the evoked image of Christ arising from Victorian biblical criticism against the image of Christ within fiction, letting both these images and the words that figured them interact. This book offers a highly accessible introduction to 19th century literature and theology through comparisons made to contemporary post-modern theorists. Demonstrating how literature can inform theology without itself becoming 'theology', this book constitutes an important contribution to the literature/theology debate and a much needed contribution to contemporary Christology through its introduction to the literature and the writers central to the beginnings of the historical quest for Jesus.

Download or read book Faith s Journey Confronts Obstacles written by R. C. Jette and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-05-01 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many Christians lack understanding of faith's journey, how God's soldiers are armored, and how to be prepared for spiritual warfare. Little knowledge in this area makes many go into battle unprepared, and they lose fight after fight. God's soldiers are doing spiritual warfare with natural (fleshly) means, which causes them to be beaten and confused, and (as Job) they sit believing that God has forsaken them. This book is not a repeat of Storms Are Faith's Workout: Preparing Christians for Spiritual Ambush. It will build upon the truths in that book to help strengthen God's soldiers to go to battle dressed in the full armor of God. There are no shortcuts to overcoming in this life, and many obstacles must be faced. In the pages of this book, God's soldiers will gain the understanding of how faith works and the necessity for God's armor in facing whatever obstacle the devil has put in their path. When the book is finished, God's soldiers will have confidence in God and in his armor. They will be emboldened to stand firm, confront any obstacle, and overcome it by faith!
