Book excerpt: The sin of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden was far more deadly than is generally perceived. Have you ever asked yourself why: it was necessary for the Redeemer to be born through a virgin? a second birth is vital for one's salvation? blood is the antidote for sin? God commanded the eradication of entire races from Canaan, babies among them? God chose the ancient Israelites? the Bible regards the works of the flesh as evil? Why not of the spirit? Cain and his descendants had a different character from that of Seth's lineage? These and many more Scripture teachings are accepted as truth simply because they are found in the Bible. It has not been fully recognized that they were, and still are, necessities brought on by the original sin. This book draws a clear link between the two. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The author is a Bible scholar with more than 30 years experience of studying Scripture. A committed Christian, he has since 1977 held various pastoral positions in the capacity of either a Pastor or an Associate Pastor. His responsibility is primarily Bible teaching and secondarily preaching. In this respect the author is recognised as a Bible teacher. He has had invitation to minister in a number of assemblies in the United Kingdom, especially in London, Glasgow, Birmingham and Cardiff. Overseas, he has ministered in Canada and Africa. In his quest for deeper Bible truths, the author has studied commentaries by eminent Bible scholars and sages. The writer holds an honours degree in Economics and Statistics with a substantial Mathematics content. Though this is his first major work, he has nevertheless written several Christian pamphlets on diverse Christian doctrines, especially those of profound subjects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An authoritative overview of the ecological activities of microbes in the biosphere Environmental Microbiology and Microbial Ecology presents a broad overview of microbial activity and microbes' interactions with their environments and communities. Adopting an integrative approach, this text covers both conventional ecological issues as well as cross-disciplinary investigations that combine facets of microbiology, ecology, environmental science and engineering, molecular biology, and biochemistry. Focusing primarily on single-cell forms of prokaryotes — and cellular forms of algae, fungi, and protozoans — this book enables readers to gain insight into the fundamental methodologies for the characterization of microorganisms in the biosphere. The authors draw from decades of experience to examine the environmental processes mediated by microorganisms and explore the interactions between microorganisms and higher life forms. Highly relevant to modern readers, this book examines topics including the ecology of microorganisms in engineered environments, microbial phylogeny and interactions, microbial processes in relation to environmental pollution, and many more. Now in its second edition, this book features updated references and major revisions to chapters on assessing microbial communities, community relationships, and their global impact. New content such as effective public communication of research findings and advice on scientific article review equips readers with practical real-world skills. Explores the activities of microorganisms in specific environments with case studies and actual research data Highlights how prominent microbial biologists address significant microbial ecology issues Offers guidance on scientific communication, including scientific presentations and grant preparation Includes plentiful illustrations and examples of microbial interactions, community structures, and human-bacterial connections Provides chapter summaries, review questions, selected reading lists, a complete glossary, and critical thinking exercises Environmental Microbiology and Microbial Ecology is an ideal textbook for graduate and advanced undergraduate courses in biology, microbiology, ecology, and environmental science, while also serving as a current and informative reference for microbiologists, cell and molecular biologists, ecologists, and environmental professionals.

Book excerpt: A collection of three crime mysteries by Brian L. Porter, now available in one volume! Behind Closed Doors: In the autumn of 1888, amidst the terror caused by Jack the Ripper's notorious murders in London, a lesser-known killer lurks in the shadows. Unknown to the public, murders are taking place aboard the carriages of the London Metropolitan Railway. Inspector Albert Norris is tasked to apprehend the elusive killer, with clues in short supply and the killer's motive a mystery. Will he be able to unravel the inexplicable series of murders and bring the culprit to justice before he strikes again? Purple Death: Detective Inspector Sean Connor faces a daunting task. A serial killer is terrorizing Richmond-on-Thames, with the murders all committed with a unique poison linked to the infamous Borgia family. Each victim seems to be unrelated, clues are scarce, and the killer is always one step ahead of them. With the help of Sergeant Lucy Clay, Connor must piece together evidence to find the mysterious "Chocolate Woman" and stop the killing spree before another life is lost. The Nemesis Cell: A group of women gather at a Belgian fertility clinic where Doctor Margherita Dumas offers a revolutionary treatment for their infertility. A year later, each of the women give birth to a healthy baby boy. Thirty years later, a mysterious killer begins to wipe out the children born as a result of Dumas’ programme. Book The Pocket Guide to Mischief

Download or read book The Pocket Guide to Mischief written by Bart King and published by Gibbs Smith. This book was released on 2008-02-01 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The greatest leaders and geniuses in history were mischief makers. They were the brave women who looked at how unfair the world was and said, “I can do better than that.” They were the stalwart men who saw stupidity and asked, “Why do we have to do it that way?” And they were the delightful children who ganged up on the neighborhood bully and hit him with wet noodles until he said, “Uncle!” Yes, history's mischief makers had the courage to point out that things like slavery, global warming, and turtleneck sweaters are bad. And they also pulled off some of the greatest hoaxes and practical jokes of all time. Their achievements include the Boston Tea Party, the “War of the Worlds” radio broadcast of 1938, and the Cheese Whiz Disaster of 2008. In honor of them, we introduce The Pocket Guide to Mischief, the perfect addition to any prankster's collection, as well as a fun-filled how-to for the budding troublemaker in all of us.

Book Energy Modelling and Fairness for Efficient Mobile Communication

Download or read book Energy Modelling and Fairness for Efficient Mobile Communication written by Ekhiotz Jon Vergara Alonso and published by Linköping University Electronic Press. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energy consumption and its management have been clearly identified as a challenge in computing and communication system design, where energy economy is obviously of paramount importance for battery powered devices. This thesis addresses the energy efficiency of mobile communication at the user end in the context of cellular networks. We argue that energy efficiency starts by energy awareness and propose EnergyBox, a parametrised tool that enables accurate and repeatable energy quantification at the user end using real data traffic traces as input. EnergyBox offers an abstraction of the underlying states for operation of the wireless interfaces and allows to estimate the energy consumption for different operator settings and device characteristics. The tool is used throughout the thesis to quantify and reveal inefficient data communication patterns of widely used mobile applications. We consider two different perspectives in the search of energy-efficient solutions. From the application perspective, we show that systematically quantifying the energy consumption of design choices (e.g., communication patterns, protocols, and data formats) contributes to a significantly smaller energy footprint. From the system perspective, we devise a cross-layer solution that schedules packet transmissions based on the knowledge of the network parameters that impact the energy consumption of the handset. These attempts show that application level decisions require a better understanding of possible energy apportionment policies at system level. Finally, we study the generic problem of determining the contribution of an entity (e.g., application) to the total energy consumption of a given system (e.g., mobile device). We compare the state-of-the-art policies in terms of fairness leveraging cooperative game theory and analyse their required information and computational complexity. We show that providing incentives to reduce the total energy consumption of the system (as part of fairness) is tightly coupled to the policy selection. Our study provides guidelines to select an appropriate policy depending on the characteristics of the system.
