Book The Nelson Whom Britons Love Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Nelson Whom Britons Love Classic Reprint written by Horatio Third Earl Nelson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nelson Whom Britons Love IN Nelson's day the press-gang was ruthlessly resorted to to man our ships of war. Some of the crews were filled up by convicts, and they were all ruled with a rod of iron. It is not to be wondered at that they were often found to be on the verge of mutiny. In the midst of this absence of all Christian love as the rule of government, it is refreshing to find our great Admiral devoting himself, through every part of his life, to put an end to this state of things, and ever to stand forth as the sailors' friend. It is my desire, in this little brochure, to bring into prominence the two noblest traits of his character. Book Heart of Darkness British Classics Series

Download or read book Heart of Darkness British Classics Series written by Joseph Conrad and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2017-04-20 with total page 589 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heart of Darkness is a classic of world literature. The book tells a story about a voyage up the Congo River into the Congo Free State, in the heart of Africa. Marlow, the story's narrator, tells his story to friends aboard a boat anchored on the River Thames, London, England. This setting provides the frame for Marlow's story of his obsession with the ivory trader Kurtz, which enables Conrad to create a parallel between London and Africa as places of darkness. Central to Conrad's work is the idea that there is little difference between so-called civilized people and those described as savages; Heart of Darkness raises important questions about imperialism and racism. Joseph Conrad acknowledged that Heart of Darkness was in part based on his own experiences during his travels in Africa. In 1890, at the age of 32, he was appointed by a Belgian trading company to serve as the captain of a steamer on the Congo River. Joseph Conrad (1857-1924), was a Polish author who wrote in English after settling in England. Conrad is regarded as one of the greatest novelists in English, though he did not speak the language fluently until he was in his twenties. He wrote stories and novels, often with a nautical setting, that depict trials of the human spirit in the midst of an indifferent universe. He was a master prose stylist who brought a distinctly non-English tragic sensibility into English literature. Book William Nelson

Download or read book William Nelson written by Daniel Wilson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from William Nelson: A Memoir Rare example of simplicity, of thoroughness in work ing up to a high standard in all that he undertook, and fidelity in his responsible stewardship as a man of wealth and a captain of industry. The friendship between us extended in uninterrupted union, with the maturing estimation of years and experience, from early boyhood till both had passed the assigned limits of threescore years and ten. It would have been easy to swell the volume into the bulky proportions of modern biography: for William Nelson keenly enjoyed the communion of friendship; and his correspondence furnishes many passages calculated to interest others besides those who knew and loved him as a friend. But the aim has been simply to present him in his habit as he lived; and thus to preserve for relatives. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nelson a Flaming Fire: A Sermon Preached by the Right Rev. The Lord Bishop of Stepney, at the Nelson Centennial Service, in St. Paul's Cathedral, on Sunday Afternoon, October 22nd This, then, is the Nelson with whom we have to do - not the erring man, not even the great admiral, the embodiment of all that is clear to the sailor heart of England; still less the protagonist of Great Britain against the French. For, thank God, his enemy has become our friend. We can even, in the confidence of friendship, ask our ancient rivals to share with us the heritage of our pride;and when we saw their sailors standing before our Nelson's statue and salute him in silence, we saw that our request was not in vain. Now Nelson to brave France is shown A hero after her own heart. The Nelson whom we celebrate to-day is simply the spirit of a virtue which every nation would wish its citizens to have - patriotism raised by the fire of zeal to a heroic height. Let us notice three elements in this flame of Nelson's fire, fused indeed, as they were, together, yet capable Of distinction.
