Book Alexander Gifford Or Vi let s Boy

Download or read book Alexander Gifford Or Vi let s Boy written by Henry A. Merrill and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alexander Gifford or Vi'let's Boy: A Story of Negro Life There is more "truth than fiction" in this little book that I am sending out. In writing the story, I have sought to show the real purpose of most educated negroes, just as I have seen it carried out, in their efforts to adjust themselves to their new surroundings. My negro characters are taken from lowly cabin homes, educated in good schools, and become influential agencies among their people. The white characters illustrate three distinct ideas of negro education. The story begins and ends in the South. I have quoted from "Negro Women" and "The Negro Child" by Mrs. S. H. Harris as published in the "Atlanta Constitution" and "The New York Independent," from speeches made at the "Montgomery, Alabama, Race Conference," in 1900, and an address given in Boston by a leading educator. To each of these I am under obligations, also to Roswell Bros., Anniston, Ala. for the use of the illustration "De Ol' Cabin 'ome." Book Ruth and Green Book

Download or read book Ruth and Green Book written by Calvin Alexander Ramsey and published by Carolrhoda Books ®. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The picture book inspiration for the Academy Award-winning film The Green Book Ruth was so excited to take a trip in her family's new car! In the early 1950s, few African Americans could afford to buy cars, so this would be an adventure. But she soon found out that Black travelers weren't treated very well in some towns. Many hotels and gas stations refused service to Black people. Daddy was upset about something called Jim Crow laws . . . Finally, a friendly attendant at a gas station showed Ruth's family The Green Book. It listed all of the places that would welcome Black travelers. With this guidebook—and the kindness of strangers—Ruth could finally make a safe journey from Chicago to her grandma's house in Alabama. Ruth's story is fiction, but The Green Book and its role in helping a generation of African American travelers avoid some of the indignities of Jim Crow are historical fact.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Negro Explorer At The North Pole. A Negro Explorer At The North Pole [1912]. By Matthew A. Henson.Introduction by Booker T. Washington. Forward presented by Robert E. Peary."In short, Matthew Henson, next to Commander Peary, held and still holds the place of honor in the history of the expedition that finally located the position of the Pole, because he was the best man for the place. During twenty-three years of faithful service, he had made himself indispensable. From the position of a servant, he rose to that of companion and assistant in one of the most dangerous and difficult tasks that was ever undertaken by men. In extremity, when both the danger and the difficulty were greatest, the Commander wanted by his side the man upon whose skill and loyalty he could put the most absolute dependence and when that man turned out to be black instead of white. The Commander was not only willing to accept the service, but was at the same time generous enough to acknowledge it.

Book 100 Amazing Facts About the Negro with Complete Proof

This book was released on 2012-07-25 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: White supremacy-busting facts that ran in the black publication the Pittsburgh Courier, written by the renowned African American author and journalist. First published in 1934 and revised in 1962, this book gathers journalist and historian Joel Augustus Rogers’ columns from the syndicated newspaper feature titled Your History. Patterned after the look of Ripley’s popular Believe It or Not the multiple vignettes in each episode recount short items from Rogers’s research. The feature began in the Pittsburgh Courier in November 1934 and ran through the 1960s. “I have been intrigued by this book, and by its author, since I first encountered it as a student in an undergraduate survey course in African-American history at Yale . . . Sometimes, [Rogers] was astonishingly accurate; at other times, he seems to have been tripping a bit, shall we say.” —Henry Louis Gates, Jr., The Root “Rogers made great contribution to publishing and distributing little know African history facts through books and pamphlets such as 100 Amazing Facts About the Negro with Complete Proof and The Five Negro Presidents . . . The common thread in Roger’s research was his unending aim to counter white supremacist propaganda that prevailed in segregated communities across the United States against people of African descent.” —Black History Heroes

Book X The Problem of the Negro as a Problem for Thought

Download or read book X The Problem of the Negro as a Problem for Thought written by Nahum Dimitri Chandler and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2013-12-15 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: X—The Problem of the Negro as a Problem for Thought offers an original account of matters African American, and by implication the African diaspora in general, as an object of discourse and knowledge. It likewise challenges the conception of analogous objects of study across dominant ethnological disciplines (e.g., anthropology, history, and sociology) and the various forms of cultural, ethnic, and postcolonial studies. With special reference to the work of W. E. B. Du Bois, Chandler shows how a concern with the Negro is central to the social and historical problematization that underwrote twentieth-century explorations of what it means to exist as an historical entity—referring to their antecedents in eighteenth-century thought and forward into their ongoing itinerary in the twenty-first century. For Du Bois, “the problem of the color line” coincided with the inception of a supposedly modern horizon. The very idea of the human and its avatars—the idea of race and the idea of culture—emerged together with the violent, hierarchical inscription of the so-called African or Negro into a horizon of commonness beyond all natal premises, a horizon that we can still situate with the term global. In ongoing struggles with the idea of historical sovereignty, we can see the working out of then new concatenations of social and historical forms of difference, as both projects of categorical differentiation and the irruption of originary revisions of ways of being. In a word, the world is no longer—and has never been—one. The world, if there is such—from the inception of something like “the Negro as a problem for thought”— could never be, only, one. The problem of the Negro in “America” is thus an exemplary instance of modern historicity in its most fundamental sense. It renders legible for critical practice the radical order of an ineluctable and irreversible complication at the heart of being—its appearance as both life and history—as the very mark of our epoch.

Book An Irishman S Tribute to the Negro Leagues

Download or read book An Irishman S Tribute to the Negro Leagues written by Thomas Porky McDonald and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2018-04-19 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Irishmans Tribute to the Negro Leagues is the first in a trilogy of Irishmans Tributes by Thomas Porky McDonald. In it, the long-ago world of Negro League Baseball is celebrated on factual, fictional, and emotional platforms. Profiles of over fifty former Negro Leaguers pay homage to the wondrous game they played. Two handfuls of Tallman Tales, McDonalds unique short stories, use the days of all-black baseball as a backdrop for some heartfelt characters that desperately seek entrance to a legendary era otherwise lost in time. Interspersed within the profiles and tales is a small collection of McDonalds trademark baseball poetry. This second edition contains additional poems and profiles, in deference to the historic Hall of Fame election of seventeen Negro League greats in 2006, via a special committee formed to try and give just due to as many of the forgotten heroes of the Negro Leagues as possible. The Hall of Fame Gallery at the center of the book contains all thirty-fivr Hall of Fame inductees based mainly on service in the Negro Leagues, from the very first one, Satchel Paige, in 1971, on through to the honored group of 2006, which included such long overdue legends as Biz Mackey, Mule Suttles, Jud Wilson, and Effa Manley, the former Newark Eagles owner who became the first woman ever honored in the plaque room at Cooperstown.
