Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1967. the most prominent events of a General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union are published in a separate volume. The Highlights of Astronomy (volume 9) report on the major scientific presentations made at the XXIst General Assembly July 23-August 1. 1991. Buenos Aires. Argentina. The present volume contains the texts of the three invited Di scourses and of the papers presented duri ng seven Joi nt Discussion Meetings and eight Joint Commission Meetings. The invited Discourses were arranged by the IAU Executive Committee and the Joint Discourses and Commission Meetings by the respective chairpersons. The overall responsability of the General Assembly was carried out by the IAU General Secretary (19B8-1991). Dr. D. McNally. I am indebted to the authors of the invited Di scourses. to the organi zers and editors of the scientific sessions for having provided me with all the material for publication in due time. I want to particularly acknowledge the case with which Dr. J.H. Hughes. who unfortunately died a few days ago from cancer. prepared and checked unti 1 the 1 ast few weeks the report on the new IAU Reference System. This report itself concludes long and difficult discussions among IAU members that he led in a wise and clear sighted manner.

Book Examining the Big Bang and Diffuse Background Radiations

Download or read book Examining the Big Bang and Diffuse Background Radiations written by Menas Kafatos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IAU Symposium No. 168, Examining the Big Bang and Diffuse Background Radiations, took place on August 23-26, 1994 at the XXIInd IAU General Assembly in the Hague, Netherlands. The meeting attracted a large number - over 250 - of astronomers, reflecting the strong interest engendered by the great advances in cosmology made in recent years. There is still a multitude of unresolved problems in modern cosmology and the symposium offered a wonderful occasion to examine them objectively, at a place where many leading workers in related fields gathered together. After the introduction by IAU President L. Woltjer and the historical background by Vice Present Virginia Trimble, the volume begins with reviews of the cosmic microwave radiation from COBE (Cosmic Background Explorer). Reviews of recent observations then extend from radio to infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays and gamma-rays. It is followed by theoretical models for the Big Bang and Inflation, and alternative views to the Big Bang. Following a discourse on Probes and Future Tests, the meeting ended with a Panel Discussion on `Major Unsolved Problems of Cosmology'. Some forty-four contributed papers - both oral and poster reports - are included after the invited talks and panel discussions.

Book A Microlensing Analysis of the Central Engine in the Lensed Quasar WFI J2033 4723

Download or read book A Microlensing Analysis of the Central Engine in the Lensed Quasar WFI J2033 4723 written by Gregory E. Hyer and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We measured the size of the accretion disk in the gravitationally lensed quasar WFI J2033-4723 by the analysis of 13 seasons of optical imagery. Using point spread function (PSF) modeling software, we measured the brightness of each of this system’s four images in 7 seasons of optical monitoring data taken at the 1.3m SMARTS telescope at Cerro Tololo, Chile and in 6 seasons of optical monitoring data from the 1.5m EULER telescope in La Silla, Chile. We combined these new data with published measurements from Vuissoz et al. (2008) to create a 13-season set of optical light curves. Employing the Bayesian Monte Carlo microlensing analysis technique of Kochanek (2004), we analyzed these light curves to yield the first-ever measurement of the size of this quasar’s accretion disk log{(rs/cm)[cos(i)/0.5]1/2}= 15.86+0.25 −0.27 at the rest frame center of the R-band ðrest = 247 nm. Despite the fact that we now know of ~ 106 lensed quasars, the size of the central engine has been measured in only 14 of these systems.
