Book Gita Govinda

Download or read book Gita Govinda written by Jayadeva and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2017-12-01 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jayadeva’s Gitagovínda is a lyrical account of the illicit springtime love affair of Krishna and Radha, a god and goddess manifesting on earth as a cowherd and milkmaid for the sake of relishing the sweet miseries and rapturous delights of erotic love. The narrative framing their bucolic songs was composed under royal patronage in northeastern India in the twelfth century. It was to be performed for connoisseurs of poetry and the erotic arts, for aesthetes and voluptuaries who, while sensually engaged, were at the same time devoted to Krishna as Lord of the Universe. The text at once celebrates the vicissitudes of carnal love and the transports of religious devotion, merging and reconciling those realms of emotion and experience. Erotic and religious sensibilities serve, and are served by, the pleasures of poetry. In the centuries following its composition, the courtly text became a vastly popular inspirational hymnal. Jayadeva's songs continue to be sung throughout India in fervent devotional adoration of Krishna.

Book excerpt: This unique work was composed in 1731 A.D. by Sri Nayanananda Thakur. The word preyo is used in the Bhakti-rasamrita-sindhu as a synonym for sakhya (fraternity). Nayanananda Thakura was a resident of Mangala-dihi village, and hailed from the disciplic branch of the famous Sri Parni Gopal, who was the direct disciple of Lord Nityananda's personal associate known as SriSundarananda Gopal. Sundarananda is celebrated as the incarnation of Sudama, one of the principal cowherd boys, who are eternal associates of Lord Balarama. These dear boyfriends incarnate on earth in order to sport with Balarama when He descends as Lord Nityananda during the performance of Gauranga-lila. This is described in the Sri Chaitanya- Charitamrita, Adi-lila, 11.13-48. The author's composition naturally follows in the footsteps of Sudama. Therefore we find the ecstatic descriptions of a day in the life of the cowherd boys of Vraja.

Book Krishna s Lineage

  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2019-07-02
  • ISBN : 0190279206
  • Pages : 480 pages

Download or read book Krishna s Lineage written by and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-07-02 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forming the final part of the Sanskrit Mahabharata, the Harivamsha's main business is to supply narrative details about the great god Vishnu's avatar Krishna Vasudeva, who has been a comparatively minor character in the previous parts of the Mahabharata, despite having taken centre stage in the Bhagavad Gita. Krishna is born in Mathura (some 85 miles south of present-day Delhi). As an infant he is smuggled out of Mathura for his own safety. He and his brother Baladeva grow up among cowherds in the forest, where between them they perform many miraculous deeds and kill many dangerous demons, before returning to Mathura where they kill the evil King Kamsa and his cronies. Thereafter, Krishna is the hero and unofficial leader of his people the Yadava-Vrishnis. When Mathura is besieged by enemies, Krishna leads his people to abandon the town and migrate west, founding the dazzling new city of Dvaraka by the sea. Krishna then repeatedly travels away from that base repeatedly to perform heroic deeds benefitting those in need - including his own people, his more immediate family, and the gods. After narrating the stories of Krishna, the Harivamsha ends by finishing the story of Janamejaya with which the Mahabharata began. The Harivamsha is a powerhouse of Hindu mythology and a classic of world literature. It begins by contextualising Vishnu's appearance as Krishna in several ways, in the process presenting a variety of cosmogonical, cosmological, genealogical, mythological, theological, and karmalogical materials. It then narrates Krishna's birth and adventures in detail. Presenting a wide variety of exciting stories in a poetic register that makes extensive use of natural imagery, the Harivamsha is a neglected literary gem and an ideal starting-point for readers new to Indian literature.

Book True prayer is mental utterance in secret

Download or read book True prayer is mental utterance in secret written by Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, William Quan Judge and published by Philaletheians UK. This book was released on 2022-01-17 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: True prayer is unselfish love of humanity. It is an act of will and a command but, unless enacted, prayer is pathetic. Prayers should be for blessings on all that lives. We shall be able to pray to Him properly, only when we approach by ourselves alone to the Alone. Our prayers and supplications are vain, unless to potential words we add potent acts. And thus make the aura which surrounds each one of us so pure and divine that the God within us may act outwardly, or in other words, become as it were an extraneous potency. To produce beneficial effects, the prayer must be uttered by “one who knows how to make himself heard in silence,” when it is no longer a “prayer” but a command. A clear conscience and a firm desire of benefiting humanity afford the best protection from air elementals, which throng public places. Loud prayers are disastrous. Woe to the unholy man who invokes the Sacred Trinity for personal advancement or pronounces It after the commission of some far-reaching sin. The Devotional Prayers of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Alexander Pope.
