Book The Necessity of Self Employment Towards Retirement

Download or read book The Necessity of Self Employment Towards Retirement written by Jim Been and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates whether individuals at the end of working life choose self-employment out of necessity and to what degree job search requirements for unemployment benefits induce people to become self-employed. For this purpose we analyze labor market transitions for people between the ages of 50 and 63 using a dynamic multinomial logit model with unobserved heterogeneity. The results indicate that at the end of the career individuals with a weak labor market position have a relatively high probability to become self-employed, e.g. to end or avoid a period of unemployment or inactivity (necessity driven self-employment). Contrasting some earlier work, the results do not suggest that self-employment is used as a gradual retirement route for employees. A difference-in-differences analysis shows that job search requirements among unemployed older workers increased the outflow from unemployment and decreased the inflow into unemployment, but did not increase self-employment out of necessity or opportunity.

Book Are Voluntary Self Employed Better Prepared for Retirement Than Forced Self Employed The Case of the Netherlands and Germany

Download or read book Are Voluntary Self Employed Better Prepared for Retirement Than Forced Self Employed The Case of the Netherlands and Germany written by Douglas A. Hershey and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When it comes to financial preparation for retirement, self-employed workers in many European countries face unique challenges not encountered by traditional wage earners. This is particularly true for self-employed workers who do not supervise subordinate personnel. This is the case because many self-employed individuals in nations such as the Netherlands and Germany do not have large-scale access to employer-sponsored pensions, which are a mainstay of pension support for most workers in those two countries. In this investigation, we explored the saving practices and perceived future pension adequacy of self-employed workers aged 15-65 in Germany (N = 702) and the Netherlands (N = 655). Of particular interest was whether respondents felt that they voluntarily chose to become self-employed, or whether they felt “forced” to enter self-employment due to economic or labor market pressures. Findings revealed that some 25 percent of workers were driven into self-employment out of necessity. Moreover, forced self-employed individuals were found to be less likely to save for retirement than their voluntary self-employed counterparts, and they envisioned a less optimistic future pension scenario for themselves. Additional analyses focused on the demographic and psychological dimensions that underlie saving practices and perceptions of pension adequacy. Discussion focuses on the need to change institutional practices and public policies that place self-employed individuals at a disadvantage -- particularly those who are driven into self-employment based on economic pressures and a lack of opportunities in the traditional labor market.

Book Self Employment and Support for the Dutch Pension Reform

Download or read book Self Employment and Support for the Dutch Pension Reform written by Ms.Izabela Karpowicz and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2019-03-19 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Netherlands’ pension system is characterized by high participation rates, adequate retirement income, strong capitalization and sustainability. Pressure points are arising, however, due to population aging and untransparent intergenerational transfers inherent in the system. Moreover, the Dutch pension system needs to adapt to the changing labor market landscape with an increasing share of workers in self-employment not covered by any pension arrangement. The government has proposed replacing collective defined-benefits schemes with personal accounts, and abolishing uniform premia and constant accrual rates. The micro-data analysis shows that allowing greater risk-taking and freedom of choice in managing pension savings could crowd self-employed into pension schemes.

Book Dynamics of Self employment Among Older Workers

Download or read book Dynamics of Self employment Among Older Workers written by Janice Tupper and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baby boomers, who were born between 1946 and 1964, are entering their retirement years. Since rates of self-employment rise with age, a disproportionate share of the self-employed is composed of middle aged or older workers. Some of these workers have been self-employed for much or all of their working lives while others have transitioned to self-employment later in their careers, often as a way of moving into retirement. Future predictions of baby boomers as a key catalyst for small business growth in the next decade and beyond have tended to neglect an important trend. The self-employment rate among those nearing retirement (defined as individuals aged 55-64) has dropped substantially in the past 20 years. This book addresses questions about this decline, and discusses the self-employment transitions among the older American workers with career jobs.

Book Bridge Employment

Download or read book Bridge Employment written by Carlos-María Alcover and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-16 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the long-term trend toward earlier retirement slowing, and the majority of older workers remaining in employment up to and beyond statutory retirement age, it is increasingly important that we understand how to react to these changes. Bridge employment patterns and activities have changed greatly over the past decade, yet there is little information about the benefits of the various different forms this can take, both for employees and employers. This comparative international collection provides the first comprehensive summary of the literature on bridge employment, bringing together experiences from Europe, the United States, Canada, Australia and Japan. It identifies the opportunities, barriers and gaps in knowledge and practice, whilst offering recommendations on how organisations and individuals can cope with future challenges in aging and work. Written by international experts in the field, each chapter also makes substantive and contextualized suggestions for public policy and organizational decision-makers, providing them with a roadmap to implement and integrate bridge employment into policies and practices designed to prolong working life - a priority for workers, organizations and societies in the coming decades. This unique research handbook will be useful to a wide range of readers with an interest in the new concept of bridge employment and the extension of working life, and of interest to researchers and practitioners in organizational behavior, labor market analysis, human resource management, career development/counselling, occupational health, social economy and public policy administration

Book Pathways to Retirement Through Self Employment

Download or read book Pathways to Retirement Through Self Employment written by Shanthi Ramnath and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We examine the role of self-employment in retirement transitions using a panel of administrative tax data. We find that the hazard of self-employment increases at popular retirement ages associated with Social Security eligibility, particularly for those with greater retirement wealth. Late-career transitions to self-employment are associated with a larger drop in income than similar mid-career transitions. Data from the Health and Retirement Study suggest that hours worked also fall upon switching to self-employment. These results suggest that self-employment at older ages may serve as a "bridge job," allowing workers to gradually reduce hours and earnings along the pathway to retirement.
