Book Metaphor and Metonymy in Comparison and Contrast

Download or read book Metaphor and Metonymy in Comparison and Contrast written by René Dirven and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2002 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book elaborates one of Roman Jakobson's many brilliant ideas, i.e. his insight that the two cognitive strategies of the metaphoric and the metonymic are the end-points on a continuum of conceptualization processes. This elaboration is achieved on the background of Lakoff and Johnson's twodomain approach, i.e. the mapping of a source onto a target domain of conceptualization. Further approaches dwell on different stretches of this metaphor-metonymy continuum. Still other papers probe into the specialized conceptual division of labor associated with both modes of thought. Two new breakthroughs in the cognitive linguistics approach to metaphor and metonymy have recently been developed: one is the three-domain approach, which concentrates on the new blends that become possible after the integration or the blending of source and target domain elements; the other is the approach in terms of primary scenes and subscenes which often determine the way source and target domains interact.

Book Somatic Cell Genetics of Woody Plants

Download or read book Somatic Cell Genetics of Woody Plants written by M.R. Ahuja and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1988-07-31 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most forest tree species were considered recalcitrant a decade ago, but now with the improved in vitro techniques some progress has been made towards culture-of tree species. Micro propagation has been achieved from the juvenile tissues of a number of forest tree species. On the other hand, tissues from most mature trees are still very difficult to grow and differen tiate in vitro. Nevertheless, there has been slow but steady progress in the application of tissue culture technology for culture of tissues, organs, cells and protoplasts of tree species. As compared to most agricultural crops, and herbaceous plant species, trees are a different lot. They have long gene ration cycles. They are highly heterozygous and have a large reservoir of genetic variability. Because of this genetic variability, their response in vitro is also variable. On a single medium, the response of tissues from different trees (genotypes) of a single species may be quite different: some responding by induction of growth and differentiation, while others showing minimal or no growth at all. That makes the somatic cell genetics of woody plants somewhat difficult, but at the same time interesting.

Book Plant Proteomic Research 3 0

Download or read book Plant Proteomic Research 3 0 written by Setsuko Komatsu and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-04-29 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Special Issue “Plant Proteomics 3.0” was conceived in an attempt to address the recent advancements in as well as limitations of current proteomic techniques and their diverse applications to attain new insights into plant molecular responses to various biotic and abiotic stressors and the molecular bases of other processes. Proteomics’ focus is also related to translational purposes, including food traceability and allergen detection. In addition, bioinformatic techniques are needed for more confident identification, quantitation, data analysis and networking, especially with non-model or orphan plants, including medicinal and meditational plants as well as forest tree species. This Special Issue contains 23 articles, including four reviews and 19 original papers.

Book 3D Contrast MR Angiography

    Book Details:
  • Author : Martin R. Prince
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-03-09
  • ISBN : 3662038692
  • Pages : 242 pages

Download or read book 3D Contrast MR Angiography written by Martin R. Prince and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-invasive, high resolution contrast arteriography without arte rial catheterization or nephrotoxicity is now possible. It is accomplished by using paramagnetic contrast and an MR scanner. Paramagnetic contrast media is injected intravenously and image data are collected as the con trast circulates through the vascular territory of interest. Due to the strong enhancement effect of paramagnetic contrast media, a small dose injected as an intravenous bolus is sufficient to briefly enhance the entire arterial vascular tree. This allows imaging with a large field-of-view that encompasses an extensive region of vascular anatomy. By using a 3D gradient echo pulse sequence on magnets with high performance gra dient systems, high resolution 3D volumes of image data are acquired in a single breath-hold. This has vastly improved image quality of 3D con trast MRA exams, particularly in the chest and abdomen. Subsequent post-processing allows an angiographic display of image data in any desired obliquity. The success of this technique is reflected by its incorporation into clinical practice in centers throughout the world. It has been applied to multiple vascular territories, using various magnets, and slightly differ ing imaging strategies. As is the ca se for all MR imaging techniques, a thorough understanding of the underlying mechanisms and proper technique are essential to fully exploit the diagnostic potential of this new form of angiography. This book will familiarize the reader with the basic principles of 3D contrast MRA.
