Download or read book The Navy of the United States Classic Reprint written by Edward Nicoll Dickerson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Navy of the United States It was apparent at once to the most limited understanding, that this change must prove fatal; for almost every man in the country knows of some case where, by the use of a cut-off on an engine in some factory, a great saving has been effected; and I at once busied myself in the effort to arrest this mad career. I wrote letters in the papers, and to the Secretary himself, and I laid them before the Congress, in the hope of arresting this fatal work. The effect of my efforts was, that Isherwood was rejected last year by the Senate when nominated for the office he has thus abused; but by pressure from the Department he was finally confirmed, and entered upon his career of destruction and fraud, with the entire approval of his superiors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Navy of the United States of America The new matter introduced into this edition, has been obtained from sources that are believed to be authentic. It is considerable in amount, and in several instances of importance; though so much dispersed through the two volumes, as probably to escape the atten tion of cursory examination. As instances of its value, we refer to the capture of the Hancock, 32, during the war of the revolution to the loss of the two sloops on Lake Champlain, in 1812; to that or the two schooners on Lake Ontario, in 1813, and to several other similar events. The corrections in dates and minor incidents, will not be apt to strike the eye at first, but the importance of accuracy in such matters will be readily admitted. Download or read book A History of the United States Navy Classic Reprint written by John R. Spears and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the United States Navy IN preparing this volume the writer has been animated by a desire to tell, in one convenient volume, that might be sold at a moderate price, the whole story of our navy - to describe all the important naval battles, and to show how the nation has been affected at certain times by the work of its naval ships, and at other times by the want of such a force. All battles that have had any influence upon the wars in which the nation has been engaged, or upon the evolution of ships of war, or upon the character of our naval men, or of the nation, have been deemed important herein. Any con sideration of the facts shows that our sailors were animated, in most of their battles, by the knowledge that they were fighting for the very life of the nation, and it is therefore not too much to say that a description of such a fight must be a hero story, however told. Frankly, it was in the be lief that every history of our navy claims attention first of all as a hero story that this one was written. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The United States Navy: A Handbook IN the course of the author 's tour of duty in the N avy Department, he was called on fre quently to prepare answers to letters request ing information about the N avy. These letters came from all parts and all classes. The wide spread interest indicated in this manner, coupled with the absence of a book of general infoma tion regarding the N avy designed for general reading, induced him to undertake the prepara tion of this book. It is intended primarily for the information of persons having some interest in naval afiairs but it is not technical. Only subjects of possible general interest have been discussed, and these only so far as they seemed to supply interest. There is at all times a demand on the press for news of the Navy's doings. The author fre quently has had the privilege of furnishing ih formation and data to newspapermen for use in their paragraphs and has in this way also felt the need for a simple manual or handbook on the N avy. Book A Short History of the United States Navy Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Short History of the United States Navy Classic Reprint written by George R. Clark and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the United States Navy This history owed its origin to the need of a work suit able in scope and treatment as a text-book for the midship men of the United States Naval Academy. Since, in a tentative form, it has been used by them with gratifying results, there is hope that it may prove of interest and value to others whose time for this subject is limited. It has been written with certain definite aims, the principal of which are the following: First, to present a record of exactly what happened, without personal, sectional, or national prejudice. Second, to regard naval events from the professional rather than the picturesque point of view; for example, to emphasize the maneuvering and gunnery in an action rather than the smoke and blood. Third, to suppress the trivial and bring o'ut the important, not neglecting the services of officers in time of peace. Fourth, to give, whenever possible, the original sources, such as letters from secretaries of the navy, and official reports of officers. These official reports, we feel, are of singular value. The fighter writes as he shoots - straight to the mark. He may be prejudiced in favor of his own flag, but his account is usually more sportsmanlike than are the corresponding accounts of his countrymen who were not there to see, and has a unique interest that no rewriting ever attains. In the following pages will be found reports by both friends and foes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Naval History of the Civil War Since that era the Navy of the United States has been making history for the country on a scale almost bewildering, and could the Old pioneer captains of 1812 have been permitted to look on from their present abode (wherever that may be), we doubt not but that they would have been astonished at the large fleets we were putting afloat with such wonderful rapidity; and they would also have acknowledged that their descend ants had nobly borne themselves in the war for the salvation of this Union, which was as dear to our forefathers as it is to us at the present time. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Navy The navy in all countries has ever been, and, as far as we can now judge, ever will be, a preeminent instrument of government. It was through her navy that Greece destroyed the power of Persia; Rome that of Carthage; the allies at Lepanto that of the Turks; England that of Holland and later that of France in America; the navy of France, in turn, caused the relinquishment of Great Britain's sovereignty over the thirteen colonies which formed the United States, and a generation later it was the British navy which made the efforts of the great Napoleon the baseless fabric of a vi sion. Book The United States Naval Chronicle Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The United States Naval Chronicle Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Charles Washington Goldsborough and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-12 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The United States' Naval Chronicle, Vol. 1 The chronologist owes to the world a true and impartial account of the events he preposes to record. While the country of his birth may justly claim his inviolable fidelity and his undivided love, truth commands him to feel that he is a member of the great community of man, and that his record, to be useful, must be true. If, per chance, it should dis close errors ou the part of his government, or of his fellow citizens, it will afford the Opportunity of manifesting their wisdom, by a change of policy or measures. If, on the contrary, it should proclaim the wisdom of those who rule, or the prowess of those who meet in the field of bat tle, it will be viewed with complacency, if not with pride, and excite a spirit of emulation, fruitful in patriotism and heroic daring. We advert with a filial fondness to those pages of our own history, which denote the wisdom of our forefathers, the energy of their arms, and the invincibility of their virtues. The recollection of these cannot fail to inspire their descendants with a sentiment, as holy as it is true, that, as exertions and sacrifices gained our triumphant battle for the liberties of our country, so they still re main as the corner stone and arch to the perpetuation of national glory. In every age wisdom and valor have founded empires, and imbecility. And want of energy have marked their decline. Having accomplished this exploit, the marauders continued their way up the bay, and turning up into the Sassafras River ravaged the country on both sides of the little stream. After spreading distress far and wide over the beautiful country that borders Chesapeake Bay, the vandals returned to their ships, boasting that they had despoiled the Americans of at least seventy thousand dollars, and injured them to the amount of ten times that sum.
