Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Naval Pioneers of Australia The printing by the New South Wales Government of the Historical Records of New South Wales has given bookmakers access to much valuable material (dispatches chiefly) hither to unavailable; and to the volumes of these Records, to the contemporary historians of The First Fleet of Captain Phillip, to the many South Sea voyages, and other works acknow ledged in the text, these writers are indebted. Their endeavour has been to collect together the scattered material that was worth collecting re lating to what might be called the naval period of Australia. This involved some years' study and the reading of scores of books, and we men tion the fact in extenuation of such faults of commission and omission as may be discerned in the work by the careful student of Australian history. John’s life as a child was destroyed by the navy. His career as a young adult was destroyed by the resulting psychological injuries. It specifically discusses the four main trends that will shape tomorrow's world: - Demographics-by 2040, 1.4 billion people will be added mostly in Africa and South Asia. - Economics-increased government debt and concentrated economic power will escalate problems for the poor and middleclass. - Climate-a hotter world will increase water, food, and health insecurity. - Technology-the emergence of new technologies could both solve and cause problems for human life. Students of trends, policymakers, entrepreneurs, academics, journalists and anyone eager for a glimpse into the next decades, will find this report, with colored graphs, essential reading.

Book Stacking the coffins

Download or read book Stacking the coffins written by Ida Milne and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-22 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1918–19 influenza epidemic killed more than 50 million people, and infected between one fifth and half of the world's population. It is the world's greatest killing influenza pandemic, and is used as a worst case scenario for emerging infectious disease epidemics like the corona virus COVID-19. It decimated families, silenced cities and towns as it passed through, stilled commerce, closed schools and public buildings and put normal life on hold. Sometimes it killed several members of the same family. Like COVID-19 there was no preventative vaccine for the virus, and many died from secondary bacterial pneumonia in this pre-antibiotic era. In this work, Ida Milne tells how it impacted on Ireland, during a time of war and revolution. But the stories she tells of the harrowing impact on families, and of medicine's desperate search to heal the ill, could apply to any other place in the world at the time.
