Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1909 edition. Excerpt: ... Ill The Meaning of the Nature-Study Movement IT is one of the marks of the progress of the race that we are coming more and more into sympathy with the natural world in which we dwell. The objects and phenomena become a part of our lives. They are central to our thoughts. The happiest life has the greatest number of points of contact with the world, and it has the deepest sympathy with everything that is. The best thing in life is sentiment; and the best sentiment is that which is born of the most accurate knowledge. I like to make this application of Emerson's injunction to "hitch your wagon to a star"; but it must not be forgotten that a person must have the wagon before he has the star, and he must take due care to stay in the wagon when he rides in space. Mere facts are dead, but the meaning of the facts is life. The getting of information is but the beginning of education. "With all thy getting, get understanding." Of late years there has been a rapidly growing feeling that we must live closer to nature and make our nature-sentiment vital; and we must of course begin with the child. We attempt to teach this nature-love in the schools, and we call the effort nature-study. It would be better if it were called nature-sympathy. As yet there are no recognized and regulated methods of teaching nature-study. The subject is not a formal part of the course of study; and thereby it is not perfunctory. And herein lies much of its value--in the fact that it cannot be reduced to a mere system, is not cut and dried, cannot become a part of rigid and formal school method. Its very essence is spirit. It is as free as its subject-matter, as far removed from the museum and the cabinet as the living animal is from the skeleton. It thus transpires that...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nature-Study Idea, an Interpretation of the New: School-Movement to Put the Young Into Relation and Sympathy With Nature A Contributors to a recent issue of a leading technical journal has endeavored to find a satisfactory answer to the question, "What is nature-study?" by appealing to "eminent scientific men." The answers of these men are printed there in full. Now, the nature-study movement is not a product of "eminent scientific men," nor directly of the current natural-science movement. It is a product of the common schools. Eminent scientific attainment, as such, is not to be expected to enable persons to give satisfactory answer to the question, for the subject is not within its realm. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Nature-Study Idea, Liberty Hyde Bailey articulated the essence of a social movement, led by ordinary public-school teachers, that lifted education out of the classroom and placed it into firsthand contact with the natural world. The aim was simple but revolutionary: sympathy with nature to increase the joy of living and foster stewardship of the earth. With this definitive edition, John Linstrom reintroduces The Nature-Study Idea as an environmental classic for our time. It provides historical context through a wealth of related writings, and introductory essays relate Bailey's vision to current work in education and the intersection of climate change and culture. In this period of planetary turmoil, Bailey's ambition to cultivate wonder (in adults as well as children) and lead readers back into the natural world is more important than ever.

This book was released on 2019-09-15 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Every family can have a garden." -Liberty Hyde Bailey Finally, the best and most accessible garden writings of perhaps the most influential literary gardener of the twentieth century have been brought together in one book. Philosopher, poet, naturist, educator, agrarian, scientist, and garden-lover par excellence Liberty Hyde Bailey built a reputation as the Father of Modern Horticulture and evangelist for what he called the "garden-sentiment"—the desire to raise plants from the good earth for the sheer joy of it and for the love of the plants themselves. Bailey's perennial call to all of us to get outside and get our hands dirty, old or young, green thumb or no, is just as fresh and stirring today as then. Full of timeless wit and grace, The Liberty Hyde Bailey Gardener's Companion collects essays and poems from Bailey's many books on gardening, as well as from newspapers and magazines from the era. Whether you've been gardening for decades or are searching for your first inspiration, Bailey's words will make an ideal companion on your journey.
