Its focus is on texts rather than on sentences, on embeddedness in contexts rather than on decontextualized examples, and on units of meaning rather than on items of form. While this orientation may set the book apart from linguistic approaches of a more formalist and more narrowly structuralist leaning, it does insist on a focus on language. The argumentation presented here shows a high regard for details of linguistic realization, rather than a discourse exclusively situated on higher semiotic levels. Although the author subscribes to a basically socio-semiotic and functionalist orientation, the specific contribution attempted here to the socio-semiotic enterprise is that of the linguist and translation scholar, rather than that of the literary studies or cultural studies specialist. The approach seeks to consider translations and related forms of texts on macro- and micro-levels, offering tools for the language professional and for the researcher.

The author further observes that translated signs are not only intelligible for target audiences, but also work together as a "theatre of consciousness" or a "theatre of controversy" which the author views as powered by Charles S. Peirce's three categories of Firstness, Secondness, and Thirdness. This book presents the virtual community of translators as emotional, dynamical, intellectual but not infallible semioticians. Translators produce fleeting and fallible text-translations, with obvious errors caused by ignorance or misguided knowledge. Text-signs are translatable, yet there is no such thing as a perfect or "final" translation. And without the ongoing creating of translated signs of all kinds, there would be no novelty, no vagueness, no manipulation of texts and - for that matter - no semiosis.

In this book, Hannu Kemppanen explores the distribution of ideologically loaded keywords in early Finnish translation of Russian political genres which yielded insights into the complex political relation between Finland and Russia in the post-Soviet era. Adriana Pagano uses multivariate analysis in the study of a large-scale corpus of Brazilian fiction translations produced between 1930s-1950s which is known as the golden age of Latin American translation. The statistical analysis detected a number of translation strategies in Brazilian Portuguese fictional translations which point to deliberate efforts made by translators to re-frame original English texts within the Brazilian social and political context in the first three decades under investigation. Meng Ji uses exploratory statistical techniques in the study of recent Chinese media translation by focusing three important media genres, i.e. reportage, editorial and review. The statistical analysis effectively detected important variations among three news genres which are analysed in light of the social and communicative functions of these news genres in informing and mobilising the audience in specific periods of time in Mainland China.
