Book Across the Danube Southeastern Europeans and Their Travelling Identities 17th 19th C

Download or read book Across the Danube Southeastern Europeans and Their Travelling Identities 17th 19th C written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-11-21 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Danube has been a border and a bridge for migrants and goods since antiquity. Between the 17th and the 19th centuries, commercial networks were formed between the Ottoman Empire and Central and Eastern Europe creating diaspora communities. This gradually led to economic and cultural transfers connecting the Mediterranean, the Black Sea, and the Continental world of commerce. The contributors to the present volume offer different perspectives on commerce and entrepreneurship based on the interregional treaties of global significance, on cultural and ecclesiastical relations, population policy and demographical aspects. Questions of identity, family, and memory are in the centre of several chapters as they interact with the topographic and socio-anthropological territoriality of all the regions involved. Contributors are: Constantin Ardeleanu, Iannis Carras, Lidia Cotovanu, Lyubomir Georgiev, Olga Katsiardi-Hering, Dimitrios Kontogeorgis, Nenad Makuljević, Ikaros Mantouvalos, Anna Ransmayr, Vaso Seirinidou, Maria A. Stassinopoulou.

Book Modernizing Muscovy

Download or read book Modernizing Muscovy written by Jarmo Kotilaine and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-08-02 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2004. Modernizing Muscovy is a comprehensive account of seventeenth-century Russian history. It rejects the traditional interpretation of this era as the twilight of the Russian Middle Ages. By revealing important instances of dynamic change in the late Muscovite state, economy, and society, the book demonstrates the crucial importance of pre-Petrine reform in Russia’s transition to one of the great powers of the world. The book’s broad scope makes it a veritable encyclopaedia of late Muscovite history. It both synthesizes previous scholarship and breaks new ground in many important areas.

Download or read book Orthodox Russia in Crisis written by Isaiah Gruber and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2012-05-15 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pivotal period in Russian history, the Time of Troubles in the early seventeenth century has taken on new resonance in the country's post-Soviet search for new national narratives. The historical role of the Orthodox Church has emerged as a key theme in contemporary remembrances of this time—but what precisely was that role? The first comprehensive study of the Church during the Troubles, Orthodox Russia in Crisis reconstructs this tumultuous time, offering new interpretations of familiar episodes while delving deep into the archives to uncover a much fuller picture of the era. Analyzing these sources, Isaiah Gruber argues that the business activity of monasteries played a significant role in the origins and course of the Troubles and that frequent changes in power forced Church ideologues to innovate politically, for example inventing new justifications for power to be granted to the people and to royal women. These new ideas, Gruber contends, ultimately helped bring about a new age in Russian spiritual life and a crystallization of the national mentality.

  • Author : Alex Feldman
  • Publisher : Taylor & Francis

Download or read book Orthodox Mercantilism written by Alex Feldman and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-04-02 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book demonstrates how the political economy of mercantilism was not simply a Western invention by various cities and kingdoms during the Renaissance, but was the natural by-product of perpetually limited growth rates and rulers’ relentless pursuits of bullion. It contributes to discussions of the economic history surrounding the so-called “Great Divergence” between East and West, which would consequently lend context and credence to differences of economic thought in the world today. Additionally, it seeks to explain present economic thought as tacitly derived from implicit antique paradigms. This book advances fields of research from numismatics and sigillography to historical materialism and historical political economy. Divided into three parts, Orthodox Mercantilism first examines the political theology (the sovereignty) of the œcumene from the early 11th century. Second, it analyzes its peripheral legislation from the customary laws of newly Christianized dynasties up to the Kormčaja Kniga’s adoption (the Nomokanon) by 13th-century Orthodox dynasties across Eastern Europe. Third, it explores how these dynasties (and their own satellite dynasties) hoarded finite bullion to pay for defense, resulting in the 11–14th-century coinless period across Eastern Europe and Western Eurasia. Appealing to students and scholars alike, this book will be of interest to those studying and researching economic and mercantile history, particularly in the context of Byzantine and Eastern European societies.
