Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nature and Functions of the Sacraments The subject of which this book treats is one which vitally affects our religion; and any contribution to thought about it is worth attempting at a time when that religion is, from one point of view, being put to severe testing, and, from another point of view, confronted with unparalleled opportunity. Among many of the clergy with whose general conception of religion I find myself most in sympathy, there appears to be an unhappy absence of teaching about the Sacraments, which may be due in part to the lack of clear perception as to their exact nature and functions, and in part to a fear of assisting what they regard as the disproportionate emphasis which is assigned to them in some quarters. Through indifference to the necessity of definite instruction we Evangelicals have failed to encourage the intelligent use of the Sacraments, and must admit our share of responsibility for the prevalent aloofness from sacramental religion. Download or read book Models of the Church written by Avery Dulles and published by Image. This book was released on 2002-05-14 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is today a dramatic reexamination of structure, authority, dogma -- indeed, every aspect of the life of the Church is held up to scrutiny. Welcoming this as a sign of vitality, Avery Dulles has carefully studied the writings of contemporary Protestant and Catholic ecclesiologists and sifted out six major approaches, or "models," through which the Church's character can be understood: as Institution, Mystical Communion, Sacrament, Herald, Servant, and, in a recent addition to the book, as Community of Disciples. A balanced theology, he concludes, must incorporate the major affirmations of each. "The method of models or types," observes Cardinal Dulles, "can have great value in helping people to get beyond the limitations of their own particular outlook and to enter into fruitful conversation with others... Such conversation is obviously essential if ecumenism is to get beyond its present impasses." This new edition includes a new Appendix and Preface by the author.

Book Is the Church the Primary Sacrament Implications of this understanding for traditional Sacramental models

Download or read book Is the Church the Primary Sacrament Implications of this understanding for traditional Sacramental models written by Andrew Lythall and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2016-04-12 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2010 in the subject Theology - Systematic Theology, grade: 1, Durham University, language: English, abstract: At its dawn, the twentieth century was hailed as the century of the Church. As a result, in recent years, there has been a renewed interest in the Church, both in terms of its role and functions, but also in terms of its nature and ontological sacramentality. Of particular interest is the emerging concept that the Church may be the primary or primordial sacrament. This understanding, if correct, has considerable implications for traditional models of sacramentality, both in the seven-sacrament tradition within the Roman Catholic Church, and also the understanding of sacramentality represented by Reformed and Protestant models. This essay analyses the theological understanding of the church as a sacramental agent, and explores alternative forms of sacramantality.

Book Christian Theologies of the Sacraments

Download or read book Christian Theologies of the Sacraments written by Justin S. Holcomb and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2017-07-25 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Delves into the ancient debate regarding the nature and purpose of the seven sacraments What are the sacraments? For centuries, this question has elicited a lively discussion and among theologians, and a variety of answers that do anything but outline a unified belief concerning these fundamental ritual structures. In this extremely cohesive and well-crafted volume, a group of renowned scholars map the theologies of sacraments offered by key Christian figures from the Early Church through the twenty-first century. Together, they provide a guide to the variety of views about sacraments found throughout Christianity, showcasing the variety of approaches to understanding the sacraments across the Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox faith traditions. Chapters explore the theologies of thinkers from Basil to Aquinas, Martin Luther to Gustavo Gutiérrez. Rather than attempting to distill their voices into a single view, the book addresses many of the questions that theologians have tackled over the two thousand year history of Christianity. In doing so, it paves the way for developing theologies of sacraments for present and future contexts. The text places each theology of the sacraments into its proper sociohistorical context, illuminating how the church has used the sacraments to define itself and its congregations over time. The definitive resource on theologies of the sacraments, this volume is a must-read for students, theologians, and spiritually interested readers alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Greeley has written a lively, controversial and stimulating book in which he describes a Catholic imagination which is different from (not better or worse than) a Protestant imagination. Going beyond his own position, I believe Protestants have much to learn not just about the Catholic imagination but from it as he describes it."—Robert Bellah, coauthor of Habits of the Heart "Andrew Greeley is the most vivid sociological writer of our time. By studying artists and artisans directly, he brings David Tracy's theory of religious imagination to life. The survey data show that ordinary people have imaginations too, and that the lay person's imagination is also framed by religious tradition. This book is a tour de force."—Michael Hout, University of California, Berkeley

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a sacramental ecology, divine grace is to be found in the evolutionary emergence of life. The ‘Epic of Evolution’ is the scientific story that reveals that we live in an approximately 14 billion year old universe on a planet that is approximately 4.6 billion years old and that we are a part of the ongoing process of life that has existed on Earth for roughly 4 billion years. Nature's Sacrament focuses on the religious and ecological significance of the evolutionary epic in an effort to seamlessly connect the ecological value attributed as a part of an understanding of the evolutionary connectedness of life on Earth, with the Divine grace understood to be present in Christian sacramental worship. David C. McDuffie is a faculty member in the Religious Studies Department at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where his primary teaching schedule includes courses in World Religions, Religion in America, Christian History, Religion and Environment, and Religion and Politics. Broadly, his research and teaching interests involve the subject area of Religion and Culture, which includes but is not limited to the relationships between religion and politics, science, and health care.
