This book was released on 2000 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the innovative process as practised in the food processing industry, with emphasis on process innovation either alone or in conjunction with a new product. Data for the study were obtained from Statistics Canada's 1998 Survey of Advanced Technology in the Food Processing Industry. After an introduction on the study & the Survey, chapter 2 describes the level of innovation in the industry and provides the links between innovation and the use of advanced technologies, technological competitiveness, practice, and strategies. Chapter 3 examines the relationships among the ways that plants buy, adapt, or develop new technologies, and the methods used to develop & acquire the new technologies. Innovative activities of recent innovators are also compared with those who have not made a recent innovation. Chapter 4 studies differences in innovative activities between Canadian- controlled and foreign-controlled plants, large and small plants, and individual food industries. Chapter 5 investigates the human resource implications of technological change. Chapter 7 looks at the importance of government programs & services for innovation in the industry. The final chapter draws some conclusions.

Book Advanced Technology in the Canadian Food Processing Industry

Download or read book Advanced Technology in the Canadian Food Processing Industry written by John Russel Baldwin and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The food-processing industry benefits from a wide a range of new advanced technologies. Technological advances include computer-based information and control systems, as well as sophisticated processing and packaging methods that enhance product quality, improve food safety and reduce costs. Continuous quality improvement and benchmarking are examples of related business practices. This study examines the use of advanced technologies in the food-processing industry. It focuses not just on the incidence and intensity of use of these new technologies but also on the way technology relates to overall firm strategy. It also examines how technology use is affected by selected industry structural characteristics and how the adoption of technologies affects the performance of firms. It considers as well how the environment influences technological change. The nature and structure of the industry are shown to condition the competitive environment, the business strategies that are pursued, product characteristics and the role of technology. Firms make strategic choices in light of technological opportunities and the risks and opportunities provided by their competitive environments. They implement strategies through appropriate business practices and activities, including the development of core competences in the areas of marketing, production and human resources, as well as technology. Firms that differ in size and nationality choose to pursue different technological strategies. This technology for large and small establishments, for foreign and domestic plants and for plants in different industries.

Book Impact of Advanced Technology Use on Firm Performance in the Canadian Food Processing Sector

Download or read book Impact of Advanced Technology Use on Firm Performance in the Canadian Food Processing Sector written by John Russel Baldwin and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates the evolution of industrial structure in the Canadian food processing sector and its relationship to technological change. It does so by examining the impact on plant performance of adopting advanced manufacturing technologies, among them information & communication technologies. The study utilizes a linked dataset combining advanced technology-use data from a 1998 special survey with firm performance data derived from administrative records covering 1988-97. The data file contains information on advanced technology-use, plant characteristics, and plant performance. The paper first examines the characteristics of firms that adopt advanced technologies. It also enumerates the extent to which plants replace one another by transferring market share and the extent to which this has been accompanied by changes in relative productivity & profitability. It then studies the effect of technological choices on plant performance, using measures such as growth in productivity and market share, and examines the relationship between the use of advanced manufacturing technology (such as programmable controllers, aseptic processing, and computer networks) and those two measures of plant performance.

Book Food Products Evolution Innovation Drivers and Market Trends

Download or read book Food Products Evolution Innovation Drivers and Market Trends written by Angela Tarabella and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-06-29 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern awareness of nutrition issues can be understood correctly if considered the destination of a historic journey, the critical aspects and outcomes of which have led to the current situation. In fact, over time there have been changes to scientific knowledge, food availability and processing and preservation methods. Commercial exchange has increased considerably between the countries of the world – so much so that it has defined a completely different scenario to the past and has influenced food availability, distribution models, preservation methods and the composition of individual foodstuffs. The products consumed on a daily basis throughout the world in industrialised countries have undergone review by the food industry, incorporating great aspects of innovation that make them highly different in their structure, content and even the packaging that protects and contains them. After covering the subject of innovation in the food sector, this Brief of work will discuss the various first- and second-generation product categories distributed in Europe starting from the period of post-war reconstruction, in order to illustrate the reasons that led to their birth and development on the market. Specific examples are shown for each proposed class, including highlights of their properties, technologies, innovation potential, related regulations, and distinctive features.

This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'All would agree that with more than 3, 000 new firms formed in Europe, Japan and the United States focused on biotechnology, and with elegant strides forward in our understanding of genetics, the genome, proteomics and other related fields, a true intellectual, social and industrial revolution is in the making. Maureen McKelvey et al provide fascinating data on firm formation, case studies of emerging business models and cross-regional and national comparisons. The work is a useful beginning in our understanding of an emerging phenomenon.' - James M. Utterback, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, US This book offers a novel insight into the economic dynamics of modern biotechnology, using examples from Europe to reflect global trends. The authors apply theoretical insight to a fundamental enigma of the modern learning society, namely, how and why the development of knowledge and ideas interact with market processes and the formation of industries and firms.

Book Enhancing Food Safety and Productivity

Download or read book Enhancing Food Safety and Productivity written by John Russel Baldwin and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the factors contributing to the adoption of advanced technologies in the Canadian food-processing sector. The numbers of technologies used by plant is found to be highly correlated with expected gains in firm performance. The benefits of enhanced food safety and quality, as well as productivity improvements, are closely associated with technology use. Impediments that negatively affect technology use include software costs, problems with external financing, lack of cash flow for financing, and internal management problems. Even after accounting for the different benefits and costs associated with technology adoption, the numbers of advanced technologies that are adopted are found to be greater in larger plants, in foreign-controlled plants, in plants that engage in both primary and secondary processing, and in the dairy, fruit and vegetable and "other" food product industries.
