Book The Natural Theology of Natural Beauty Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Natural Theology of Natural Beauty Classic Reprint written by Richard St. John Tyrwhitt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural Theology of Natural Beauty BY the title of this book the author wishes to assert that there is an argument derivable from the appearances of external Nature, parallel with that from internal structure or mechanism set forth by Paley. Both point to a benevolent Creator: the latter showing that His purposes are favourable to our natural life; the former indicating His further purpose of exalting our thoughts or spiritual life. We find the world adapted to our life and comfort, and have a right to infer that a Living Creatorl made it, and means us well in it. Then we find that, while providing for our physical life, Nature or the external world appeals through our senses to our thoughts and emotions. Our inference is, that that also is a portion of His contrivance for us, by which He means to affect our thoughts con cerning Him, or, in other words, to appeal to us. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Natural Theology It follows from what we have said that in the Scholastic philosophy Natural Theology is no um essential adjunct, no mere afterthought, but a substantive and vital part of the system, without which it would be radically incomplete. It claims to establish from assured first principles the exist ence of'a Supreme Being, distinct from the finite and mutable things of experience. It maintains, further, that though the limitations of the human intellect render all our knowledge of Him inade quate, we are not wholly ignorant of His nature. There are certain attributes which can be affirmed of Him with certainty, though they are His in a manner more 'perfect than any which we can imagine. Above all, He is' intelligent and free, and therefore possessed of personality. In Him it finds the source and origin of all finite beings, and the final cause in view of which such beings exist. The world is here represented as having been made for man. To him as an intelligent and moral being, all nature is subservient. Where he has to yield, it is not evidence, that man is disregarded in the mechanism Of the universe, nor is he overcome as inferior to inanimate nature but it is simply the individual suffering under the operation of some law made inflexible for the benefit of the race. And when all had been done for man that it seems possible to do through an irrational creation, and his highest wants were still unprovided for, the Bible was given to complete the provision.
