Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a time of climate change and mass extinction, how we garden matters more than ever: “An outstanding and deeply passionate book.” —Marc Bekoff, author of The Emotional Lives of Animals Plenty of books tell home gardeners and professional landscape designers how to garden sustainably, what plants to use, and what resources to explore. Yet few examine why our urban wildlife gardens matter so much—not just for ourselves, but for the larger human and animal communities. Our landscapes push aside wildlife and in turn diminish our genetically programmed love for wildness. How can we get ourselves back into balance through gardens, to speak life's language and learn from other species? Benjamin Vogt addresses why we need a new garden ethic, and why we urgently need wildness in our daily lives—lives sequestered in buildings surrounded by monocultures of lawn and concrete that significantly harm our physical and mental health. He examines the psychological issues around climate change and mass extinction as a way to understand how we are short-circuiting our response to global crises, especially by not growing native plants in our gardens. Simply put, environmentalism is not political; it's social justice for all species marginalized today and for those facing extinction tomorrow. By thinking deeply and honestly about our built landscapes, we can create a compassionate activism that connects us more profoundly to nature and to one another.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1917 edition. Excerpt: ... THE ART OF GROUPING LANDSCAPE gardeners, especially those of the naturalistic persuasion, have always had a suspicion that the art of grouping their plants was a very important matter. At one time and another a good deal of discussion has been given to the subject, a large part of it fruitless. Indeed the net result, after years of landscape gardening, seems very slight. The best men still appear to have vague and hazy ideas on the subject. Old practitioners have indeed fallen into working formulas of their own, but they themselves usually feel that these formulas are inadequate, while every one else can see that these set methods of grouping are more detrimental than useful. It is perhaps too much to expect that, under these circumstances, the whole art of plant grouping can now be set forth simply and effectively in a book. Yet a careful discussion of the main points must prove helpful, and the endeavor to reach a statement of principles will at least be suggestive. It seems possible to distinguish seven different types of plant groups classified as to form. These are (1) the single specimen, (2) the group of two, (3) the group of three, (4) the larger group of five or more, (5) the row, (6) the mass, (7) the social group. The single specimen is, strictly speaking, not a group, of course, but it demands treatment in this same connection. Early landscape gardening dealt largely in specimens. Writers often emphasized the importance of giving each individual room for complete development. Many of the old time gardens were nothing more than collections of individual specimens. This tendency toward specimen planting has not wholly disappeared. In botanic gardens it is appropriate and necessary. But in pure landscape gardening, where the...

This book was released on 2016-08-21 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art and Practice of Landscape Gardening It is not the author's intention by this book to give another history of landscape gardening; his intention is rather to record the present development of the art and his own relation to, and practice of it. The love of natural picturesqueness is of very modern growth in England. Its rise was coincident with that of the modern novel in literature, and of genre painting in art. Little more than a century has, with the aid of conducing in uences, ripened the feeling to a passion. Peace and augmenting prosperity have been necessary conditions for advancing the art. Book Landscape Garden Series Planting the Home Grounds Classic Reprint

Download or read book Landscape Garden Series Planting the Home Grounds Classic Reprint written by Noble P. Hollister and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Landscape Garden Series, Planting the Home Grounds The results produced by planting are so strikingly obvious that the layman is but indifferently impressed with the other factors of a successful landscape plan, and as a consequence, landscape develop ment, whatever the type, finds favor or disfavor in the popular eye solely from the point of view of planting. This fact is a source of some discouragement to the intelligent designer, who realizes that good design is the real basis of his work, and cherishes that above all else. Without a good design as a basis for landscape development, plant material ceases to function as a delightful medium in which to render the plan, but serves instead as a means for covering up or blotting out unsightly mistakes. According to natural sequence, the design is the most important factor in a landscape development, for unless an intelligent design is first prepared for the whole development, much time, labor and expense will be wasted. Planting is next in importance, for it is the material medium that gives life to the design. But so far as popular approval is concerned, the landscape architect realizes that practically his only source of satisfaction in working out a good design is his own artistic conscience, and that the public loudly praises a successful planting. While I have availed myself of the works of European authors, and especially those of Britain, where Landscape Gardening was first raised to the rank of a fine art, I have also endeavored to adapt my suggestions especially to this country and to the peculiar wants of its inhabitants. Book The Theory and Practice of Landscape Gardening Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Theory and Practice of Landscape Gardening Classic Reprint written by Joshua Major and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory and Practice of Landscape Gardening I have followed Landscape Gardeners, indeed, whose practice has been merely to give rough sketches of their projected improvements, and then to leave their execution to others. But such is not my idea of a Land scape Gardener's duty, for in this way the Home view, or Dress Grounds, which ought always to be brought to the nicest finish, because they are constantly under the eye, are often left in the most slovenly and inartistic state; thus exposing the artist to censure, and occasioning disappointment and vexation to those who consult him. It is thought by many that, if the art of Landscape Gardening were more generally studied, the result would be materially to injure the profes sion, by destroying its emoluments, - that landed proprietors and others would design their own plans, lay out their own estates, and superintend their own alterations. But this is not my opinion, for I have generally found persons of the most cultivated taste peculiarly anxious for improve ments, and most ready to employ a professional man to execute them. And this is reasonable; for the same good taste which shews them what is wrong, also convinces them of their own inability, from want of practical experience, to rectify it. However, my object in this work is to assist in promoting a general taste for Landscape Gardening, and I hope my readers will find considerable assistance from a careful perusal of its pages. In them are suggestions for the Laying-out and Arrangement of both Park and Villa Grounds, and for the Planting of Forests, down to that of Flower beds. They will find, also, what methods to pursue and what to avoid, - what constitute harmonious beauties, and what discord. Book Henderson s Picturesque Gardens and Ornamental Gardening Illustrated Classic Reprint

Download or read book Henderson s Picturesque Gardens and Ornamental Gardening Illustrated Classic Reprint written by Charles Henderson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Henderson's Picturesque Gardens and Ornamental Gardening Illustrated The great interest manifested in gardening pursuits for ages has invited the publication of an endless amount of litera ture on this and allied topics. This store of outdoor lore, both ancient and modem, is perhaps more voluminous than that of any other material subject. The theme is covered from every point, including fluent dissertations by the devotees of certain schools, in which are formulated the canons of strict propriety in garden embellishment, and a condemnation of other methods not in accord with the fancies or training of the authors; but we believe that broadened, traveled people appreciate the beauties of many styles of gardens, whether they possess the strength and breadth of the Natural, Landscape and Picturesque, or the fine execution and delicate finish of the formal Italian, French and Architectural. All of them, when in harmony with their situations, possess their own particular attractions. To our mind, there should be no set style followed in adorning gardens and lawns. Every house and its surroundings should invite its own plan, which gives the estate added charms of originality, variety and character. The dominant object of ornamental gardening is to enhance home surroundings, and this object is attractively accomplished by composing, into a pleasing picture on the lawn, trees, shrubs, flowering and decorative plants with accessories, - therefore the designer should shape his thought to some original ideal thoroughly befitting the situation; and regardless of fleeting fashion, taste should be used in arranging the living elements of the picture and unifying them with the objective, as an artist brings forth his work on the canvas with brush and colors. There are underlying principles to be followed in both cases to insure artistic 'results, but it is not our intention to enter into exhaustive precepts in this book, having'devoted most of the space to illustrations which show such a variety. Of garden scenes, with examples of various com binations of plants, shrubs, trees and garden-like adornments, that we trust some will create fruitful suggestions adaptable to the environments of many homes both pretentious and modest. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “If the world of gardening has rock stars, Piet Oudolf qualifies as Mick Jagger, David Bowie, and Prince rolled into one.” —Gardenista The original publication of Planting the Natural Garden ushered in a revolution in landscape design: the New Perennial Movement. Spearheaded by internationally renowned designer Piet Oudolf, and incisively articulated by the late plantsman and designer Henk Gerritsen, it transformed private and public spaces with its emotionally resonant, naturalistic use of hardy perennials and grasses. Now this classic has been expanded and updated to include scores of new plants and combinations. Packed with practical information and visual inspiration, Planting the Natural Garden zeroes in on the New Perennial Movement’s power to move us, making its distinctive plant palette available to all. For enthusiasts of these vibrant landscapes, it is an essential text; for gardeners who love the dreamy moods and colors that Oudolf and Gerritsen celebrate, it’s the key to a magic kingdom of garden beauty.

Download or read book Landscape Garden Series Planting and Maintenance Classic Reprint written by Charles H. Lawrence and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Landscape Garden Series Planting and Maintenance The importance of providing careful direction and guidance in growth cannot be overestimated. All planning is done with an idea in mind. When the idea is carried out in the actual arrangement of land and landscape, the forces of man and nature must combine if the idea and purpose of the design is to be realized. A place carefully planned and laid out never offers the best appearance if it is not properly maintained throughout the year. Proper care includes more than keeping things clean and neat, although that is a large part of the work. Proper care includes, also, attention to the things which have to do with the health, growth, and appearance of the plants that they may have the best chance to do the work prescribed for them. It is not the purpose here to provide a manual of gardening, but to give those points concerning planting and maintenance which have'been found to be most needed or desired by the home owner, and attention to which will insure more than the average success in planting and caring for ornamentals.
