Book The Natural Resources and Industrial Development and Condition of Colorado Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Natural Resources and Industrial Development and Condition of Colorado Classic Reprint written by UNKNOWN. AUTHOR and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural Resources and Industrial Development and Condition of Colorado Thirteen years ago Colorado was admitted into the Union. Before the commencement of the present century there is no written record of the civilized habitation of the country now known as Colorado, except in the southern portion, where a few Mexicans and Spaniards had made a settlement, and here their establishments still remain. The country now embraced by Colorado was first explored by Americans in 1806, when the expedition of Lieutenant Zebulon Pike marched across the plains to Pike's Peak, that sublime statue of nature which stands before the world in romance, poem and picture - a beacon to western civilization. In 1820 the expedition of Colonel S. H. Long came across the plains, and in 1842-4 occurred the celebrated exploration of General John C. Fremont across the Rocky Mountains. These three courageous explorers, with their armored retinue of brave men, like the Spaniards who came and went away two centuries before them, bore testimony of the great mineral wealth of the country but each and all reported no discovery of precious metals. As if by the eternal fitness of things, this discovery was reserved for the progressive people of to-day. The first actual settlement, from which has grown the present population, was made in 1858, when a party of explorers, under the leadership of W. G. Russell, a Georgian, found gold on Dry creek, seven miles south of the site of Denver, and made their first settlement at the latter place. The news was spread abroad of this discovery, and others which quickly followed, inspired in the people of the Eastern States that spirit of western immigration which gave world-wide fame to the "Pike's Peak Country" in 1858 and '59 and started in motion the wheels of industry which have since that time developed fabulous wealth in the State. Colorado was organized as a Territory by act of Congress, February 28, 1861, and admitted as a State in 1876, the Centennial year of the nation. The State takes its name from its largest stream, the Colorado river, a name bestowed by Spaniards and derived from the generally red color of its waters, the result of the disintegration of the reddish, clayey soils which the river drains in its devious course through the hills and canons of the State toward the sea. Colorado is situated between latitude 37 and 41 north, and longitude 1020 and 109 west. It is bounded on the east by Kansas and Nebraska, on the west by Utah, on the north by Wyoming Territory, and on the south by Indian Territory and New Mexico. The State has an area of 104,500 square miles. Its average length, east and west, is 380 miles; its breadth north and south, 280 miles, and it contains 55 counties. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Resources, Wealth and Industrial Development of Colorado: Published by the Agricultural Department, Colorado Exhibit, at the World's Columbian Exposition, June 1, 1893 The plains east of the mountains constitute more than one-third of the total area of the State, and the lands everywhere possess a rich soil, highly productive of all manner of crops wherever water can be applied, wheat, oats, rye, barley, corn, potatoes and alfalfa being the principal crops. In the eastern tier of counties crops are successfully grown without irrigation. The western slope of the mountains comprise level mesas and broad valleys, the latter watered by numerous streams, being extremely rich in soil and productive to a high degree of all the fruits and cereals of the temperate zone. The mesas possess great fertility, especially adapted to fruit culture. Separated from all these sections by mountain ranges, the plains and valleys of Southwestern Colorado, embracing a large territory, are equally rich in soil and bountifully productive of orchard, field and garden crops. Download or read book The Government of the People of the State of Colorado Classic Reprint written by John Sylvester Young and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Government of the People, of the State of Colorado The character of the land - its fertility resources, loca tion and extent - determines the occupations of the people. The occupations of the people, together with their former training, determine the form of government for the State. A State with fertile soil and favorable climate, exten sive forests of timber, and vast stores of minerals, requires a form of government and special laws that will regulate agriculture, lumbering and mining. The special laws of a State containing a navigable river will probably pertain to commerce. The chief resources of Colorado are (1) fertile soil and (2) a great variety of minerals. These resources indicate the occupations of the people, and the occupations in turn indicate the Special character of the laws of the State. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Colorado, Vol. 2 of 3: Prepared Under the Supervision of the State Historical and Natural History Society of Colorado The first successful colony on the neighboring Martinez grant, west of the Rio Grande, was established in 1854. The promoter of this colony was J osé Maria J aquez, who selected a site at Guadaloupe, on the Conejos River, in August of that year. While final preparations were being made to move to the new location in the autumn of 1854, the colonists were joined by Major Lafayette Head of Ser villeta.11 Head was a Missourian who had gone to Santa Fé in 1846 as a private under the command of Colonel Sterling Price. At the expiration of his term of service he decided to remain in New Mexico, where, as merchant and colonizer, he rose to a position of influence among his Mexican friends as is shown by his subsequent elections to the legislatures of New Mexico and Colorado. In spite of troubles with the Indians, the Conejos colonists retained their lands; the population of Conejos County in 1868 was estimated at mostly Mexicans.12 Apart from an occasional Indian scare, it was a quiet life that the Mexicans lived in the San Luis Valley. Their principal industry was grazing, and for theirflocks and herds there was an abundance of land and grass and water. In agriculture they followed the crude methods used by their fathers for generations before them. They were scarcely touched by the rushing currents of life in the outside world. Book Forests and Snow Classic Reprint

Download or read book Forests and Snow Classic Reprint written by Louis George Carpenter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forests and Snow The intimate connection between the melting snow banks of the mountains and the agricultural prosperity of Colorado is too evident to those acquainted with the conditions of the State to need discussion, for most of the water which carries fertility to the fields and farms comes from the white-capped mountains; but even among those most interested in the agriculture of the State there have been some who have had a question as to the extent to which the forests were useful. Some have even advocated their destruction, under the supposition that the water supply would be increased. While it is not thought by the writer that the forests materially affect the rainfall in our Colorado mountains, their influence as a pro teeting cover for the snow and in saving it from premature melting and the effect of winds, which increase the evaporation, is an important function. Without intending to enter upon a discussion of the question at this time, this bulletin is more especially intended to bring out some of the relations of the forests to our water supply, which have become evident in our study of one of the typical irrigation streams, and also to present some of them pictorially, in such form as to help the reader draw conclusions for himself.
