Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural History of Plants, Vol. 4 More internally is found a second coloured petaloid envelope, with a tube more or less elongated according to the species, dilated at the base into a kind of sac, and spreading out above into a funnel-shaped limb, of which the five divisions are deeply induplicate-contorted. The androccum is formed of five stamens, alternating with the divisions of the inner envelope. They arc generally of unequal length, each composed of a filament, free in all its upper portion, surmounted by a bilocular introrse anther, with two cells dehiscing by longitudinal submarginal clefts. Below, these filaments sometimes adhere to the tube of the perianth, and, quite at their base, unite into a short thick tube, fleshy in certain species, and more or less urceolate and glandular. Where they are no longer quite suitable they will be briefly elucidated; and, when the conceptions to which they refer have been expanded or limited, the Old established names will also be taken in a wider or a narrower sense as the case may be. New expressions will only be introduced where their use is productive of greater clearness and distinctness in the ideas involved; and even these additions must be in harmony with the terms already in existence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural History of Plants, Vol. 1: Their Forms, Growth, Reproduction and Distribution; From the German of the Late Anton Kerner Von Marilaun; Biology and Configuration of Plants Not long ago two artisans, who had borrowed a copy of The Natural History of Plants from one of the Vienna public libraries and had studied its pages, called upon me, asking me to show them under the microscope some of the things there described. It seems that without any special educational advantages they had availed themselves of leisure moments to extend their knowledge, and had read the work with profit. On leaving, they thanked me in simple words for the pleasure, instruction, and stimulus which they had derived from the perusal of my book. I confess that these words gave me vastly more pleasure than many of the verbose and flattering reviews that had appeared in newspapers and scientific journals, many of which conveyed the impression of being the result of hasty skimming of copies sent by the publishers. The satisfaction which the little incident gave me was the greater, in that it was an assurance that I had achieved what had been my intention, namely, to write a book which might serve as a source of knowledge, not only for specialists and scholars, but also for the many who, though compelled to follow some practical calling, still take an interest in science, and who wish, each in his own particular degree, to obtain information of its progress. Popular treatises on the results of scientific investigation are by no means rare with us Germans; but in too many cases scientific problems involving serious thought are touched superficially, and, like the stone in a sweet fruit, are embedded in picturesque and attractive accounts of things purely of subordinate importance. The reader, gratified by the elegant phraseology, passes by the kernel of fact, and derives little profit from the book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural History of Plants: Their Forms, Growth, Reproduction, and Distribution Although the authors of the Flora had no such purpose in view, their works furnished the starting-point for a real history of the vegetable world. A com parison of the Floras of neighbouring regions shows that certain plants inhabit a greater, others a lesser area; that the boundaries of the species confined to a distinct district coincide with territories inhabited by various races of mankind; that the boundaries of this and that species coincide and stand in relation to various climatic and other conditions. Download or read book The Plant World Vol 3 Classic Reprint written by Plant World Association and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Plant World, Vol. 3 The fall of 1892 was very dry, and a piece of woodland near Oakwood, Staten Island, N. Y., was burned over. Some of the swamps included in the area continued to burn for about two months in spite of several rains. To walk in one of the burnt swamps after the fire was out, was like tramping in the snow; the ashes were ankle deep and soft and fine. Many red maples two feet in diameter had fallen. There were also a few trees of other kinds. Their roots had been burned and a strong north wind, that came later, had blown them down. Book The Natural History of Plants Vol 5

Download or read book The Natural History of Plants Vol 5 written by Anton Kerner Von Marilaun and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural History of Plants, Vol. 5: Their Forms, Growth, Reproduction, and Distribution Some annual species of the Wood-sorrel genus - such as Oxalis stricta, for example - have five short and five long stamens in each flower. The anthers of the latter are of the same height as the stigmas, but begin by being at a little distance from them, so that at this period cross-fertilization may be efl'ected by insects alighting upon the stigmas. Within the space of a few hours, however, the longer stamens incline towards the stigmas and deposit their pollen upon them. Here, again, the pollen of the five shorter stamens does not reach the stigma in the same flower, but is devoted to cross-fertilization. As in these annual species of Wood sorrel, so also in the majority of species of St. J ohn's-wort (h ypericum), the unequal length of the stamens, combined with the fact of the non-simultaneity of sexual maturity (dichogamy), is of advantage to the plant in that it ensures that auto gamy shall take place just before the flower fades, whilst permitting at an earlier period cross-fertilization by the pollen of other flowers through the agency of insects. In Hypericum perforatm, which may be chosen as our example, the pistil is encom passed by a number of filiform filaments of unequal lengths, so arranged that the longest are in close proximity to the central pistil and the shortest near the peri phery of the flower. The anthers do not liberate their pollen simultaneously, but one group does so after another. Dehiscence takes place first in the short stamens, next in those of median size, and last of all in the long ones. As soon as an anther opens, the filament bearing it inclines inwards, and thus one after another, the short, median, and long filaments stand up and approach the middle of the flower. It being only the anthers of the longest stamens that are on the same level as the stigmas, autogamy cannot occur till quite at the last, not long before the flower withers.
