Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bold piece of work, The Natural History of Atheism by John Stuart Blackie explores the constructs of theism, atheism and polytheism in minute detail. Spread across six chapters, the book initially treads through a section called Presumptions which postulates the underlying premise of the author. John Stuart Blackie effortlessly weaves an engrossing narrative against the backdrop of different religious beliefs. The deliberations transcend cultures and borders to rope in Greek polytheism and Buddhism, providing a number of riveting causes for atheism, which unfold throughout the length of the book. The The Natural History of Atheism is a great insight in to why certain groups do not believe in the existence of God - For John Stuart Blackie these reasons are underpinned by traits that include ignorance, pride and moral turpitude among others. The last section of the book dwells on atheism due to reaction and a disbelief in Christianity. The author is able to successfully distinguish between different contexts and settings to provide logical explanations for rise of atheism across multiple religions. The Natural History of Atheism is hard hitting and straightforward in its approach. With an already well-established professor and man of letters as its author this work is full of piquant wit, yet the narrative is decidedly structured, as John Stuart Blackie unfolds his most cogent arguments at the right moments. If not for tracing the roots of atheism and its underlying causes, readers would be pleased with The Natural History of Atheism by John Stuart Blackie for its deep insights into different religions. This book will cater to a larger audience as it is premised on universal issues in the realm of religion and belief systems. Book Atheism in Pagan Antiquity Classic Reprint

Download or read book Atheism in Pagan Antiquity Classic Reprint written by Anders Björn Drachmann and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-08 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Atheism in Pagan Antiquity A difficulty that occurred at the very beginning of the inquiry was how to define the notion of atheism. Nowadays the term is taken to designate the attitude which denies every idea of God. Even antiquity sometimes referred to atheism in this sense but an inquiry dealing with the history of religion could not start from a definition of that kind. It would have to keep in View, not the philosophical notion of God, but the conceptions of the gods as they appear in the religion of antiquity. Hence I came to define atheism in Pagan antiquity as the point of view which denies the existence of the ancient gods. It is in this sense that the word will be used in the following inquiry. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Atheism in Philosophy: And Other Essays The moment we begin to speculate about the universe, there arises the question Of origin. Phi losophy, even atheistic philosophy, cannot stop short Of the primordia rerum; it wants to know unde Natura creet res, auctet alatque. The arch-atheist of antiquity could not rest in a given phenomenal world, but pushed his inquiry, says his great commentator,1 extra flammantia moenia mundi. The question Whence? Is found to be involved in the questions What? And How? And here' it is that philosophic atheists differ among themselves almost as widely as they dif fer from theists. I select as illustrations two prominent examples, an ancient and a modern, representing two Opposite types, -- Epicurus and Schopenhauer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Atheism Under Its Forms of Pantheism, Materialism, Secularism, Development, and Natural Laws A treatise on the Being and Perfections of God, as the Creator and Governor of the world, can scarcely be adapted to the exigencies of modern society, unless it be framed with express reference to the existing forms of unbelief, and the prevailing tendencies both of philosophical thought and of popular Opinion. It is quite possible, indeed, to construct a scheme of evidence on this subject out of the amme materials which the storehouse of nature affords, without entering into any discussion of the questions, whether Physical or Meta physical, which have been raised respecting it. But this method, although it might be sufficient for many, perhaps for most, Of our readers - for all, indeed, who come to the study of the subject with reflective but unsophisticated minds - could scarcely be expected to meet the case or to satisfy the wants of those who stand most in need of instruction; the men, and especially the young men, in all educated communities, who, imbued with the spirit of philosophical speculation, and instructed, more or less fully, in the principles of modern science, have been led, under the influence of certain celebrated names, to adopt Opinions which prevent them from seriously considering any theological question, and to regard the whole subject of religion with indifference or contempt, as one that lies beyond the possible range of science, - the only legitimate. Book A Sacred Space Is Never Empty

Download or read book A Sacred Space Is Never Empty written by Victoria Smolkin and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-10-29 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Bolsheviks set out to build a new world in the wake of the Russian Revolution, they expected religion to die off. Soviet power used a variety of tools--from education to propaganda to terror—to turn its vision of a Communist world without religion into reality. Yet even with its monopoly on ideology and power, the Soviet Communist Party never succeeded in overcoming religion and creating an atheist society. A Sacred Space Is Never Empty presents the first history of Soviet atheism from the 1917 revolution to the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. Drawing on a wealth of archival material and in-depth interviews with those who were on the front lines of Communist ideological campaigns, Victoria Smolkin argues that to understand the Soviet experiment, we must make sense of Soviet atheism. Smolkin shows how atheism was reimagined as an alternative cosmology with its own set of positive beliefs, practices, and spiritual commitments. Through its engagements with religion, the Soviet leadership realized that removing religion from the "sacred spaces" of Soviet life was not enough. Then, in the final years of the Soviet experiment, Mikhail Gorbachev—in a stunning and unexpected reversal—abandoned atheism and reintroduced religion into Soviet public life. A Sacred Space Is Never Empty explores the meaning of atheism for religious life, for Communist ideology, and for Soviet politics.
