Book Northern Yukon National Park Boundary Proposal

Download or read book Northern Yukon National Park Boundary Proposal written by Frances Rennie and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In January, 1978, the western portion of the northern Yukon was publicly announced by the Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs as a proposed national park. In July 1978, some 38,700 km2 (15,000 sq. miles) of the northern Yukon, including the proposed park area, were withdrawn - by Order-in-Council for a national park and other conservation purposes. It was Parks Canada's intention that the area of interest identified as a potential national park at that time, encompassing about 21,000 km2 (8,200 sq. miles), would undergo a refinement of boundaries once additional information was available on major park values, a non-renewable resource inventory, and native land selection. This boundary proposal summarizes the analysis completed in 1982 by Dr. Graham Yapp, incorporates information and suggestions provided by Lands Directorate and Parks Canada staff with technical expertise in the northern Yukon, and includes their recommendations for boundaries based on an assessment of ecological and management considerations and of proposed mineral developments. The proposed boundaries provide increased representation of the natural themes and outstanding features of the Northern Yukon Natural Region and improved protection of significant resources within the proposed national park, yet the overall park area is reduced to 18,200 km2 (7,000 sq. miles). The boundary proposal includes within the park the watershed of the Babbage River system, a representation of the Barn Range, the catchment of the Black Fox Creek and its surrounding pediments. The southern part of the area of interest is reduced to include that portion of the Old Crow Flats north of and including the Old Crow River and the Black Fox Creek catchment. While the Flats are a recognized area of international significance, the portion recommended for inclusion within the park is the smallest area which can still provide adequate representation of their significant features"--Leaf i.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Protected areas and conservation policies ore usually established with only local nature and wildlife in mind. Yet they con have far reaching consequences for local populations, often undermining their access to resources and their livelihoods. This book is the first comprehensive discussion of the social consequences of protected area schemes and conservation policies. Drawing on case studies from North America, Europe, Asia, Central America and Africa, it critically reviews current trends in protected area management, and shows how local people have been affected in terms of their customary rights, livelihoods, wellbeing and social cohesion. The loss of secure livelihoods ultimately threatens conservation, as poverty and environmental degradation intensify in and around protected areas. The leading authorities who have contributed to this ground breaking volume argue for a thorough overhaul of conservation thinking and practice.
