Book Aging in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Aging in Sub Saharan Africa written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-11-10 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In sub-Saharan Africa, older people make up a relatively small fraction of the total population and are supported primarily by family and other kinship networks. They have traditionally been viewed as repositories of information and wisdom, and are critical pillars of the community but as the HIV/AIDS pandemic destroys family systems, the elderly increasingly have to deal with the loss of their own support while absorbing the additional responsibilities of caring for their orphaned grandchildren. Aging in Sub-Saharan Africa explores ways to promote U.S. research interests and to augment the sub-Saharan governments' capacity to address the many challenges posed by population aging. Five major themes are explored in the book such as the need for a basic definition of "older person," the need for national governments to invest more in basic research and the coordination of data collection across countries, and the need for improved dialogue between local researchers and policy makers. This book makes three major recommendations: 1) the development of a research agenda 2) enhancing research opportunity and implementation and 3) the translation of research findings.

Book The Native Labor Problem of South Africa

Download or read book The Native Labor Problem of South Africa written by James Maddison Tinley and published by . This book was released on 1942 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of exploitation of native labor in South Africa is an outgrowth of the conscious policy of discrimination against natives that has been followed by successive governments and supported by the white labor unions. The whole development of South Africa is based on the existence of a large supply of cheap unskilled native labor, and it is an excellent example of the dislocations that occur when an economy of prices and wages is superimposed on a more primitive tribal economy. Book Setting Down Roots

Book excerpt: From the early 1860s until 1911 thousands of Indians were recruited to work on the farms of Natal. During the same period many others came to South Africa as immigrants seeking opportunities as traders or craftsmen. The Indian community in South Africa today owes its presence in the country largely to those Indians who decided to make South Africa their home. This study traces the movements of these settlers in the face of increasing hostility from whites and the harsh and unfamiliar conditions under which they had to live.

Book South African Social Attitudes

Download or read book South African Social Attitudes written by Udesh Pillay and published by HSRC Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A country’s attitudinal profile is as much a part of its social reality as are its demographic make-up, its culture and its distinctive social patterns. It helps to provide a nuanced picture of a country’s circumstances, its continuities and changes, its democratic health, and how it feels to live there. It also helps to measure the country's progress towards the achievement of its economic, social and political goals, based on the measurement of both 'objective' and 'subjective' realities. South African Social Attitudes: Changing Times, Diverse Voices is a new series aimed at providing an analysis of attitudes and values towards a wide range of social and political issues relevant to life in contemporary South African society. As the series develops, we hope that readers will be able to draw meaningful comparisons with the findings of previous years and thus develop a richer picture and deeper appreciation of changing South African social values. This, the first volume in the series, presents the public's responses during extensive nation-wide interviews conducted by the HSRC in late 2003. The findings are analysed in three thematic sections: the first provides an in-depth examination of race, class and politics; the second gives a critical assessment of the public's perceptions of poverty, inequality and service delivery, and the last explores societal values such as partner violence and moral attitudes. South African Social Attitudes is essential reading for anyone seeking a guide to contemporary social or political issues and debates. It should prove an indispensable tool not only for government policy-makers, social scientists and students, but also for general readers wishing to gain a better understanding of their fellow citizens and themselves.
