This book was released on 1996 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP), in an effort to revitalize commercial shipbuilding in United States, is funding research projects designed to provide better tools and insight to world class commercial shipbuilding practices. The need for a complete set of comprehensive US National Commercial Shipbuilding Standards was the basis for this project. It entailed visits to several world class shipyards, by a team of experienced shipbuilders, to look at their standards and standards producing organizations. The objective of this task was to establish a management plan (process) for the identification, evaluation, development and maintenance of an effective, internationally recognized set of commercial standards applicable to the US shipbuilding and repair industry. This report will provide a summary level analysis of the project findings along with the management plan. The plan will identify: where to start, national vs. Shipyard standards, partnerships (with nationally recognized standards organizations) and typical methods/organizations to be implemented for the establishment and maintenance of national and shipyard standards programs.

Book The National Shipbuilding Research Program World Class U S Shipbuilding Standards Task 3 Catalog of Foreign Standards for Common Systems and Ship Types

Download or read book The National Shipbuilding Research Program World Class U S Shipbuilding Standards Task 3 Catalog of Foreign Standards for Common Systems and Ship Types written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report/database was developed under Project NSRP 6-94-1, World Class U.S. Shipbuilding Standards (Task 3). Task 3 (after several changes in guidance due to lack of availability of standards) was to look at four specific areas (Ventilation, Electrical, Piping and Structure) from which a matrix database was to be developed that cross-referenced 4 ship types (RO-RO, LNG, Ferries, Tankers) to standards supporting the desired domain (see below). The ventilation area was to address hangers and ventilation fittings; the electrical area was to address hangers and tray systems; the piping area was to address hangers, firemains, and fittings (select a few); and the structure area was to address components, ladders, and handrails. For each of these areas, standards were identified from either an existing paper index or digital database. Once standards were identified an attempt was made to get copies of the standards from MARAD since funding to purchase standards was not included in the tasking. MARAD had indicated in several SP-6 meetings that they had access to a significant number of standards and would make them available for various uses (uses were limited since most standards have COPYRIGHT restrictions). As will be seen, there were a significant number of standards that were identified but were not available from MARAD from a variety of reasons (funding being the most significant; government shutdowns were also a factor).

Book The National Shipbuilding Research Program Planning Workshop

Download or read book The National Shipbuilding Research Program Planning Workshop written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In March of 1992, twenty representatives from standards setting bodies, the shipbuilding industry, and government met for two and one half days in Kansas City to formulate a blueprint for developing a coordinated marine industry standardization process and create a unified vision of the critical role standards can play in improving the global competitive position of the U.S. shipbuilding industry. The workshop produced a list of ten strategic advantages an industry standardization program can provide to U.S. shipbuilding; a vision statement for the United States Ship and Marine Technology standardization effort; nine strategic goals with which to guide this effort over the next one to five years; and thirty-seven short term action recommendations tied to the strategic goal statements The Workshop was originally identified as SNAME Ship Production Committee, Panel SP-6, Standardization Project P-69" and was an expansion of effort under MARAD contract administered by Peterson Builders, Inc. as part of the Program Management function (Task P-58). It was also closely related to the Standards Master Plan Project (Task P-66). The Workshop was developed with the intent that it start with a clean sheet of paper, there would be no sacred cows". In order to ensure the highest level of objectivity, a facilitator and standards technical advisor with no connections to the Marine Industry were retained to design and conduct the Workshop. Assisting them was an ad hoc committee consisting of the Panel Chairman, SP-6 Program Manager, and the Long-Range Plan Project Director.

This book was released on 1981 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries/IHI-Marine Technology is developing a long-range plan for the U.S. shipbuilding standards program under a subcontract with Bath Iron Works Corporation acting in its capacity as manager of the Ship Producibility Program. Primary emphasis of the long-range plan is directed at near term (2 to 3 year) priorities to achieve maximum benefits at both industry and individual shipyards levels. Secondary emphasis is aimed at developing midterm (5 to 7 year) and long-term (10 to 20 year) goals to serve as planning guidelines for ongoing efforts. The basic goals and objectives of the U.S. shipbuilding standards program long-range plan are summarized. Included are such examples as the need to reduce design and engineering cycle time costs, the need to shorten manufacturing lead times for critical materials, and the desirability of implementing outfit unit construction and accuracy control concepts. The recommended organizational infrastructure for standards development is addressed, and appropriate divisions of responsibility among ASTM Committee F-25 on standards, SNAME Panel SP-6 on standards and specifications, the government, shipbuilders, regulatory agencies, supporting industries and other concerned parties are discussed.

Book Shipbuilding Technology and Education

Download or read book Shipbuilding Technology and Education written by Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-05-22 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. shipbuilding industry now confronts grave challenges in providing essential support of national objectives. With recent emphasis on renewal of the U.S. naval fleet, followed by the defense builddown, U.S. shipbuilders have fallen far behind in commercial ship construction, and face powerful new competition from abroad. This book examines ways to reestablish the U.S. industry, to provide a technology base and R&D infrastructure sustaining both commercial and military goals. Comparing U.S. and foreign shipbuilders in four technological areas, the authors find that U.S. builders lag most severely in business process technologies, and in technologies of new products and materials. New advances in system technologies, such as simulation, are also needed, as are continuing developments in shipyard production technologies. The report identifies roles that various government agencies, academia, and, especially, industry itself must play for the U.S. shipbuilding industry to attempt a turnaround.

Book The National Shipbuilding Research Program Following Development of the Federal Effluent Guidelines for Metal Products and Machinery Facilities

Download or read book The National Shipbuilding Research Program Following Development of the Federal Effluent Guidelines for Metal Products and Machinery Facilities written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Federal Clean Water Act (CWA) established a program to restore and maintain the integrity of the nation's water. To implement the Clean Water Act, Congress directed the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to issue effluent limitation guidelines, pretreatment standards, and new source performance standards for industrial discharges. The shipbuilding and repair industry has been selected to be included in the future proposed regulations for the federal categorical effluent limitations and standards defined as Metal Products and Machinery (MP&M). The development of this new proposed effluent guideline is the result of a consent decree, NR5C et al v. Reilly. At present, some shipyards or shipyard process wastewaters are regulated under the Metal Finishing categorical effluent standard which was promulgated in 1982 (40 CFR Part 433). Certain industries including the shipbuilding and repair industry, which are currently regulated under the Metal Finishing Category, will be incorporated into the new proposed MP&M standards.

Book Navy Force Structure and Shipbuilding Plans

Download or read book Navy Force Structure and Shipbuilding Plans written by Ronald O'Rourke and published by . This book was released on 2020-11-14 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Updated 12/10/2020: In December 2016, the Navy released a force-structure goal that callsfor achieving and maintaining a fleet of 355 ships of certain types and numbers. The 355-shipgoal was made U.S. policy by Section 1025 of the FY2018 National Defense AuthorizationAct (H.R. 2810/P.L. 115- 91 of December 12, 2017). The Navy and the Department of Defense(DOD) have been working since 2019 to develop a successor for the 355-ship force-level goal. The new goal is expected to introduce a new, more distributed fleet architecture featuring asmaller proportion of larger ships, a larger proportion of smaller ships, and a new third tier oflarge unmanned vehicles (UVs). On December 9, 2020, the Trump Administration released a document that can beviewed as its vision for future Navy force structure and/or a draft version of the FY202230-year Navy shipbuilding plan. The document presents a Navy force-level goal that callsfor achieving by 2045 a Navy with a more distributed fleet architecture, 382 to 446 mannedships, and 143 to 242 large UVs. The Administration that takes office on January 20, 2021,is required by law to release the FY2022 30-year Navy shipbuilding plan in connection withDOD's proposed FY2022 budget, which will be submitted to Congress in 2021. In preparingthe FY2022 30-year shipbuilding plan, the Administration that takes office on January 20,2021, may choose to adopt, revise, or set aside the document that was released on December9, 2020. The Navy states that its original FY2021 budget submission requests the procurement ofeight new ships, but this figure includes LPD-31, an LPD-17 Flight II amphibious ship thatCongress procured (i.e., authorized and appropriated procurement funding for) in FY2020.Excluding this ship, the Navy's original FY2021 budget submission requests the procurementof seven new ships rather than eight. In late November 2020, the Trump Administrationreportedly decided to request the procurement of a second Virginia-class attack submarinein FY2021. CRS as of December 10, 2020, had not received any documentation from theAdministration detailing the exact changes to the Virginia-class program funding linesthat would result from this reported change. Pending the delivery of that information fromthe administration, this CRS report continues to use the Navy's original FY2021 budgetsubmission in its tables and narrative discussions.

Book The National Shipbuilding Research Program Guide to International Approval Processes for Commercial Ship Construction

Download or read book The National Shipbuilding Research Program Guide to International Approval Processes for Commercial Ship Construction written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You're on a business trip and, in a local store, you see a lamp that will look great in your den. You buy the lamp but not the light bulb, since you have many. On returning home, you screw a 40W bulb into the lamp, plug the lamp into the wall socket and turn it on. It works perfectly; you are indebted to National Standards. National Standards not only ensure that lamps work, our shoes fit, and this paper fits the photocopier, they also ensure that ships are built in the most cost effective way possible. National standards become a method of communication, so that a part's specification can be relayed between any vendor, to any engineer in any shipyard with the knowledge that the part is available, functional, and is competitive. NSNRP 6-94-1, Word Class U.S. Shipbuilding Standards was dedicated to establishing the framework for developing a set of U.S. National Standards that could compete with those from Japan, Korea, Western Europe and other World Class commercial shipbuilding countries. The aim of the project was not to create a new National Standards body but to assist those standards bodies, already established in the U.S., in publishing standards that are truly World Class. Definition: For the purposes of this report, the expression World Class means that a shipyard is capable of designing a VLCC (say) in 10 months and completing ship construction in 18 months from contract award realizing a profit in the process.
