This book was released on 2016-12-07 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Guidelines for Identifying, Evaluating, and Registering Historic Mining Properties The threats faced by these properties, along with the complex task of under standing the significance of deteriorated sites associated with our industrial heritage, suggest the timeliness of a bulletin on evaluating and nominating historic mining properties to the National Register of Historic Places. The National Register evaluation process offers a framework for assessing the significance of mining sites, while listing in the National Register will help assure that significant mining sites are recognized and protected when pos sible. The ultimate goal of this bulletin is to provide a body of information to support Federal, State, and local efforts to manage historic mining properties with a sense of stewardship predicated upon recognition of the importance of these properties in our nation's history. Book Considerations in Reference to the Establishment of a National School of Mines as a Means of Increasing the Product of Gold and Silver Bullion Classic Reprint

Download or read book Considerations in Reference to the Establishment of a National School of Mines as a Means of Increasing the Product of Gold and Silver Bullion Classic Reprint written by Library Of Congress and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-02 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Considerations in Reference to the Establishment of a National School of Mines as a Means of Increasing the Product of Gold and Silver Bullion At no period in our history has there existed a greater necessity for an increase in the production of bullion than at present. The ablest intellects oi the country have been for some time past directed to the subject of our financial condition. Already numerous schemes have been presented to Congress for the maintenance of our credit at hom'e and abroad, and various projects having in view a reduction of the burden of taxation will doubtless be discussed during the present session. Considering the great importance of the mining interest in this connection, it seems singular that the annual decrease in our product of bullion for the last few years has attracted so little attention. According to a statement in the President's message, the production of precious metals in the United States from 1849 to 1857, inclusive, amount to from 1858 to 1860, inclu sive, to 0137, and from 1861 to 1867, inclusive, to making the grand aggregate of products since 1849, This estimate certainly does not exceed the amount actually produced. But the returns of the principal mining States and Territories will show that for several years past there has been a gradual decline. Book A History of Mining in Death Valley National Monument Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book A History of Mining in Death Valley National Monument Vol 1 of 2 written by Linda W. Greene and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-24 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Mining in Death Valley National Monument, Vol. 1 of 2: Part 1 of 2 The amassing of data for this report has been an exhaustive and time-consuming task made bearable primarily by the enthusiastic cooperation of many individuals and institutions. The writers would first like to extend their thanks to former Superintendent Donald M. Spalding and to Superintendent George Von der Lippe and the various members of their staff who made our visits to the park pleasant and profitable during the course of our research and fieldwork. Chief Ranger Richard S. Rayner arranged severaltimes for rangers to serve as chauffeurs and guides into some of the more remote sections of the monument, and their familiarity with the area and willingness to traverse miles of rugged terrain probably saved both writers from becoming additional Death Valley victims. Robert T. Mitcham, mining engineer, and Anne Madsen, then of the mining office, contributed information from their vast files and knowledge of the area, in addition to xeroxing services, that greatly facilitated the research effort. Mr. Mitcham's knowledge of all aspects of the park's mining operations is indeed impressive. Also to be thanked is Virgil I. Olson, Chief Interpreter, who freely lent negatives from the visitor center photograph file for use in'our report and assisted in other ways with interpretive information. Several private individuals were also consulted, who were either frequent visitors to the area or else are engaged in personal research on some facet of the valley's history. They were all most generous with their time and knowledge of the region, and include William G. Fiero, University of Nevada at Las Vegas, and Richard E. Lingenfelter, University of California at San Diego. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Historic Resource Study Classic Reprint

Download or read book Historic Resource Study Classic Reprint written by Sharon A. Brown and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historic Resource Study This historic resource study has been prepared to satisfy the research needs as stated in the task directive concerning New River Gorge National River under Package No. 106. Data contained in this report will be used in interpretation, preservation, and management needs at the site. This study focuses on the history of a town and mine located on the south side of the New River, at the top, mid-way, and bottom of the gorge. Opened in 1900 by the Low Moor Iron Company of Low Moor, Virginia, the mine and town site were donated to the National Park Service by the Berwind Land Company in December 1985. This study includes information concerning the town's founding, evolution, and social history; the significance of the New River coal mining industry; and a discussion of aspects of mining history, including ethnicity of miners, mine safety, and unionization issues. Most of the research was conducted during field trips to the Library of Congress and National Archives in Washington, DC and to West Virginia and the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia, in May, June, and August 1986. Several people assisted in preparing this report. The author's thanks goes to Gene Cox, formerly of the New River Gorge National River staff, for opening his history files and supplying information. Dr. Fred Armstrong and the staff at the Department of Culture and History, Archives and History, in the Cultural Center in Charleston, West Virginia, provided research leads and sources. Ruth Larison, formerly of the Rocky Mountain Region Library acquired countless secondary sources through interlibrary loan. Dr. Lou Athey of the Franklin Marshall University, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, provided research materials as well as generous use of his Kay Moor study draft. Staff in the Manuscripts Department, Alderman Library at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, aided with research in the Low Moor Iron Company collection. Norma Camarena, Denver Service Center, drew the historical base maps and Joan E. Huff typed the draft. A final thanks goes to National Park Service Chief Historian Edwin C. Bearss for his enthusiasm for Kay Moor. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
