Book excerpt: Excerpt from The National Formulary of Unofficinal Preparations IT is well known that the remedies for which the Pharmacopoeia prescribes definite standards, constitute only a limited portion of the resources of the medical profession in the treatment Of the sick. Without referring to the more ephemeral preparations, 0; to such as are of a proprietary character, or are used by the public for self medication, there is a large number of others, which are more or less frequently prescribed by physicians, or demanded by the public, but which are not recognized by the Pharmacopoeia, either because they were not deemed by the revisers to be Of sufficient importance to be included in the official work, or because they originated subse quently to the appearance of that work, or for other reasons. Owing to the absence of an authoritative standard, many of these uno icia] preparations have been, and are being made, after different formulae, and in varying strength, so that the pharmacists, particularly in the larger cities, are compelled to procure and keep on hand a variety of brands of what is intended to be one and the same preparation, to satisfy the demands of their patrons, professional or otherwise. The evils arising from this condition of things are so well known and so far-reaching in their results, that there is no need Of any argument in favor of a plan which_may palliate the existing evil, chie y caused by a lack Of uniformifif 5r the want of a common standard. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The National Formulary: Prepared by the Committee on National Formulary of the American Pharmaceutical Association, Official From September 1, 1916 From the earliest days of the American Pharmaceutical Association the need was recognized of an authoritative formulary, extra to the Pharmacopoeia, to contain the preparations of a non-secret character which were commonly prescribed by physicians under incomplete or varying formulas. Individual samples of such preparations as elixirs, wines, emulsions, solutions, etc., would vary in minor ingredients, sometimes in strength, and frequently in color, flavor and general appearance, according to the choice of the maker. Oftentimes the differences in any particular preparation were of little or no importance therapeutically, but were manifested in physical properties sufficiently to cause confusion among physicians and patients, and to require that the pharmacist carry in stock several different brands of the article in order to supply the demands of his trade. Thus both ethical and economic conditions in pharmacy called for a standard formulary of recognized authority which would eliminate non-essential differences and would supply uniform preparations, not included in the Pharmacopoeia, for use by physicians. The American Pharmaceutical Association quickly gave attention to this problem, and as early as 1856 a committee was appointed by the President "to collect and report to the next meeting. unofficial formulas in local use with many physicians of our Union." At the meeting of 1857 this committee of ten reported formulas for eighty-three preparations, which were adopted by the Association. The committee was continued and enlarged, and the following year fourteen additional formulas were submitted. But the second report contains a hint that unfavorable criticism had appeared, and the committee was then discontinued. In 1883 another committee was appointed, termed the Committee on Unofficial Formulas, and consisting of J. W. Colcord, Lynn, Mass., chairman; James T. Shinn, Philadelphia; N. Hynson Jennings, Baltimore; Charles Becker, Washington; J. D. Wells, Cincinnati; S. A. D. Sheppard, Boston; A. Vogeler, Chicago; W. M. Alexander, St. Louis; Emlen Painter, San Francisco; and C. L. Keppler, New Orleans. The same year, Professor J. U. Lloyd published a book of elixir formulas, entitled "Elixirs," and containing 283 formulas. The New York and Brooklyn Formulary was also published in this year a book which was the work of a joint committee appointed by the New York College of Pharmacy, the German Apothecaries Society of New York, and the King's County Pharmaceutical Association.
