Book The NASA Dryden Flight Test Approach to an Aerial Refueling System

Download or read book The NASA Dryden Flight Test Approach to an Aerial Refueling System written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-09-17 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The integration of uninhabited aerial vehicles (UAVs) into controlled airspace has generated a new era of autonomous technologies and challenges. Autonomous aerial refueling would enable UAVs to travel further distances and loiter for extended periods over time-critical targets. The NASA Dryden Flight Research Center recently has completed a flight research project directed at developing a dynamic hose and drogue system model to support the development of an automated aerial refueling system. A systematic dynamic model of the hose and drogue system would include the effects of various influences on the system, such as flight condition, hose and drogue type, tanker type and weight, receiver type, and tanker and receiver maneuvering. Using two NASA F/A-18 aircraft and a conventional hose and drogue aerial refueling store from the Navy, NASA has obtained flight research data that document the response of the hose and drogue system to these effects. Preliminary results, salient trends, and important lessons are presentedHansen, Jennifer L. and Murray, James E. and Campos, Norma V.Armstrong Flight Research CenterAIR TO AIR REFUELING; DYNAMIC MODELS; AUTONOMY; F-18 AIRCRAFT; TIME DEPENDENCE

Book Flying beyond the stall

Download or read book Flying beyond the stall written by Douglas A. Joyce and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The X-31 Enhanced Fighter Maneuverability Demonstrator was unique among experimental aircraft. A joint effort of the United States and Germany, the X-31 was the only X-plane to be designed, manufactured, and flight tested as an international collaboration. It was also the only X-plane to support two separate test programs conducted years apart, one administered largely by NASA and the other by the U.S. Navy, as well as the first X-plane ever to perform at the Paris Air Show. Flying Beyond the Stall begins by describing the government agencies and private-sector industries involved in the X-31 program, the genesis of the supermaneuverability concept and its initial design breakthroughs, design and fabrication of two test airframes, preparation for the X-31's first flight, and the first flights of Ship #1 and Ship #2. Subsequent chapters discuss envelope expansion, handling qualities (especially at high angles of attack), and flight with vectored thrust. The book then turns to the program's move to NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center and actual flight test data. Additional tasking, such as helmet-mounted display evaluations, handling quality studies, aerodynamic parameter estimation, and a "tailless" study are also discussed. The book describes how, in the aftermath of a disastrous accident with Ship #1 in 1995, Ship #2 was prepared for its outstanding participation in the Paris Air Show. The aircraft was then shipped back to Edwards AFB and put into storage until the late 1990s, when it was refurbished for participation in the U. S. Navy's VECTOR program. The book ends with a comprehensive discussion of lessons learned and includes an Appendix containing detailed information.

Book Omega Air 707 F A 18A D Aerial Refueling Ground and Flight Test Evaluation and MA 3 1 Coupling Ground Test Evaluation

Download or read book Omega Air 707 F A 18A D Aerial Refueling Ground and Flight Test Evaluation and MA 3 1 Coupling Ground Test Evaluation written by Brian Markowich and published by . This book was released on 2001-03-01 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Omega Air, Incorporated, a private organization that provides shipping and transportation services, contracted Marconi Flight Systems, Incorporated, to retrofit a Boeing 707 aircraft with an internal centerline aerial refueling (AR) system. In support of this program, NAWCAD Patuxent River, Maryland, was funded under a private party Test and Evaluation Commercial Service Agreement to provide engineering, ground, and flight test support. The AR system used in the 707 is the same system (pump and reel) used, wing-mounted, on the KC-130F/R/T, modified to allow for a centerline installation. The hose and drogue are not the same as on the KC-130F/R/T but have the same form, fit, and function. The 707 airframe is similar to the KC-135 AR platform, which is used by the U.S. Air Force (USAF) for aerial refueling from a centerline boom and wing refueling pods. Additional piggyback ground tests of an upgrade kit for the MA-2 coupling was performed during the Omega Air ground tests. Product Support, Incorporated, a Maryland-based supplier of Navy and USAF refueling equipment, developed a new refueling coupling designed to reduce pressure surges in F/A-18 and other Navy/U.S. Marine Corps receiver aircraft. This coupling, designated MA-3-1, is a form, fit, function replacement of the existing KC-130 MA-2 coupling and has undergone full contractor qualification testing. The only test remaining prior to fleet release was a functional ground check with an instrumented receiver aircraft.

Download or read book Aerial Refueling Initiative written by U S Government Accountability Office (G and published by BiblioGov. This book was released on 2013-07 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO assessed the performance of the air refueling tanker force during Operation Desert Storm. GAO found that: (1) in late 1990, the Air Force initiated a tactical air refueling standardization package; (2) the cost to modify 3,000 F-15 and F-16 fighters and 250 tankers could be offset by the retirement of 26 KC-135 tankers; (3) the tactical air refueling initiative is intended to increase efficiency, effectiveness, interoperability, and safety during multiservice air operations; (4) the Air Force has significantly downsized and restructured the refueling initiative; (5) the assumptions used in an air staff multipoint utility study were not well founded and understated the benefits of twin off-load points; (6) the technical and operational concerns about retrofitting fighters with probes have been exaggerated; (7) the Air Force is satisfied with its refueling system and is unwilling to commit its resources to a different refueling system; (8) Desert Storm air refueling operations confirmed the advantages of multipoint refueling and pointed out additional benefits during air space-constrained operations; (9) retrofitting 15 KC-10 aircraft with twin off-load points may not be cost-effective if the Air Force does not add probes to its fighter aircraft; and (10) the Air Force is proposing to address Navy air refueling requirements by adding multipoint refueling capabilities to 75 KC-135 tankers.
