Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While innumerable books have been penned down by contemporary motivational speakers and writers on success, ambition, motivation, positive thinking and accomplishments; very few books, if any at all, have talked of what success actually is and how it is different from a socially-defined set of parameters. Being an IIT-Delhi, IIM-Ahmedabad and an Ex-Indian Civil Services Officer himself, the author very compassionately steps into the shoes of an ambitious mind and invites it to be sensitive towards the incessant suffering caused due to this burning desire to achieve. He vividly talks of how understanding of 'your' real aim will bring you to peace even during the race. He jovially remarks on how playing hard and not working hard will be a more sensible way of moving towards a goal. Author's genius lies in the fact that he has very simply answered the most intricate and complex questions that arise in the mind of every student and working professional, giving clarity on success, a topic that haunts them perpetually.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advait has since long been revered as the crown jewel of all spiritual philosophies. However, there are very few books, if any at all, that practically demonstrate the presence, applications, methods and benefits of living as per the golden teaching of Advait-Vedanta. This book is a much needed and rare attempt to bring spirituality and philosophical teachings to everyday life. The author's genius lies in being delightfully able to bridge the abstract world of theorizations and principles with day-to-day circumstances, happenings, emotions and relationships. With the author, Advait is no longer a transcendental idea, rather it is something that breathes, lives, and grows with us in our routine affairs, and enriches our life and our world as a blessing. The fun starts when the otherwise intimidating philosophy is revealed to the reader as immensely intimate and easily, practically implementable. This is a book not just for the mind, but for life!

This book was released on 2022-11-22 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Award-winning Ukrainian Writers featured in this riveting and evocative collection of prose, poetry, essays, and photos. Voices of Freedom: Contemporary Writing From Ukraine is a collection of Ukrainian writing that aims to introduce the English-speaking world to some of the most iconic living writers whose work is shaping contemporary Ukraine. These are leading intellectuals and moral authorities for the Ukrainian people, whose voices and opinions have helped to synchronize the internal compasses of Ukrainian society in the struggle for the freedom of their country. Through poetry, short stories, and essays, this collection demonstrates that the desire for freedom and the struggle to achieve it is a theme that cuts across generations of Ukrainian writers, and is a central preoccupation of Ukrainian society. This collection demonstrates the unique style and artistry of contemporary Ukrainian literature over the past 50 years. The curated poetry is an instant reaction to the events taking place today, which speaks directly to this current moment and the national psyche. The short stories sensitize readers to Ukraine’s indivisible history and the present. These are accounts about the memory of generations, choices and transitions, self-irony, friendship, love, and the powerful significance of home. These stories and novellas represent a single continuous story showing the paths, lives, and values of the Ukrainian people who have amazed the world with their courage. The essays showcase the voices of contemporary Ukrainian intellectuals, providing analysis and reflection on what is happening in the present, showing historical connections and parallels, and shedding light on the origins and triggers of the war on a mental level. The collection that follows is the story of Ukraine, in the voice of Ukrainians. Proceeds from the sale of this collection will support the cultural community and humanitarian efforts in Ukraine. “This superb anthology of Ukrainian writers delights us with talented writing across all genres and brings home what it means to be a Ukrainian on the frontlines of freedom. This rich offering helps every American better understand Ukraine: the people, the culture, and the country.” – Marie Yovanovitch, author of an instant New York Times bestseller Lessons From The Edge: A Memoir; Former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine “Voices of Freedom: Contemporary Writing from Ukraine is a brilliant introduction to a literary tradition long overlooked in America. By presenting a mosaic of perspectives, experiences, and forms, this volume showcases the depth, diversity, and resistance of the culture Putin seeks to erase. It’s hard to imagine a more politically urgent literary project.” – Anthony Marra, the New York Times bestselling author of The Tsar of Love and Techno and A Constellation of Vital Phenomena “Defending Ukraine is not just the job of soldiers on the frontline. Writers, poets, publishers and artists also have their job to do and so this book is the right one at the right time. The more people abroad know Ukraine and understand it, the more they will understand why we need to stand in solidarity with it and with its people.” – Tim Judah, British writer, reporter and political analyst for The Economist

Book Seekers of the Naked Truth

Download or read book Seekers of the Naked Truth written by Paul LeValley and published by Motilal Banarsidass. This book was released on 2018-01-01 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why would I spend a good portion of my time over the last 35 years gathering information on the Gymnosophists? The story begins even earlier. As an undergraduate student in the Flint College of the University of Michigan, I pursued an English major with a strong history minor-always looking for something between the two, and rarely finding it. Then in my practice teaching, I happened into one of the early experimental high school courses in Interdisciplinary Humanities. With the exciting interrelationships between art, literature, music, philosophy and history, I said YES-this was what I had been looking for. So I pioneered in teaching high school Humanities for the next few years. Interdisciplinary Humanities was a bottom-up movement. Gradually, colleges began offering Masters programs to give teachers the rich background they needed. I decided I was not tied to Michigan where it was cold; I would find the best Masters program in Humanities anywhere in the world, and go there. Well, it turned out that the best Masters program in the world was at Wayne State University in Detroit, of all places. Unlike other programs that were really just double majors, Wayne offered truly interdisciplinary classes. Moreover, they offered an Eastern track and a Western track. Knowing that I would never find that Eastern track anywhere else, I studied interdisciplinary courses in the cultures of India, China, Japan, and Egypt. (The middle-eastern professor was on sabbatical when I was there.) I especially liked India-perhaps because I had already travelled around the world, and India impressed me the most.

Book The Naked Crowd

Download or read book The Naked Crowd written by Jeffrey Rosen and published by Random House. This book was released on 2004-01-13 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Naked Crowd, acclaimed author Jeffrey Rosen makes an impassioned argument about how to preserve freedom, privacy, and security in a post-9/11 world. How we use emerging technologies, he insists, will be crucial to the preservation of essential American ideals. In our zeal to catch terrorists and prevent future catastrophic events, we are going too far—largely because of irrational fears—and violating essential American freedoms. That’s the contention at the center of this persuasive new polemic by Jeffrey Rosen, legal affairs editor of The New Republic, which builds on his award-winning book The Unwanted Gaze. Through wide-ranging reportage and cultural analysis, Rosen argues that it is possible to strike an effective and reasonable balance between liberty and security. Traveling from England to Silicon Valley, he offers a penetrating account of why well-designed laws and technologies have not always been adopted. Drawing on a broad range of sources—from the psychology of fear to the latest Code Orange alerts and airport security technologies—he also explores the reasons that the public, the legislatures, the courts, and technologists have made feel-good choices that give us the illusion of safety without actually making us safer. He describes the dangers of implementing poorly thought out technologies that can make us less free while distracting our attention from responses to terrorism that might work. Rosen also considers the social and technological reasons that the risk-averse democracies of the West continue to demand ever-increasing levels of personal exposure in a search for an illusory and emotional feeling of security. In Web logs, chat rooms, and reality TV shows, an increasing number of citizens clutter the public sphere with private revelations best kept to themselves. The result is the peculiar ordeal of living in the Naked Crowd, in which few aspects of our lives are immune from public scrutiny. With vivid prose and persuasive analysis, The Naked Crowd is both an urgent warning about the choices we face in responding to legitimate fears of terror and a vision for a better future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third volume in a historic six-volume series containing many of the first English translations of the classic mahamudra literature compiled by the Seventh Karmapa. Sounds of Innate Freedom: The Indian Texts of Mahamudra are historic volumes containing many of the first English translations of the classic mahamudra literature. The texts and songs in these volumes constitute the large compendium called The Indian Texts of the Mahamudra of Definitive Meaning, compiled by the Seventh Karmapa Chötra Gyatso (1456–1539). Translated, introduced, and annotated by Karl Brunnhölzl, acclaimed senior teacher at the Nalandabodhi community of Dzogchen Ponlop Rinpoche, the collection offers a brilliant window into the richness of the vast ocean of Indian mahamudra texts cherished in all Tibetan lineages, particularly in the Kagyu tradition, giving us a clear view of the sources of one of the world’s great contemplative traditions. This third volume contains twenty-four texts, the bulk of which are dohas by Saraha and commentaries on them, as well as works by other renowned Indian Buddhist mahasiddhas such as Naropa, Krsna, and Sakyasribhadra. The extensive commentaries brilliantly unravel enigmas and bring clarity to the songs they comment on as well as to many other songs of realization in the series. These expressive songs of the inexpressible offer readers a feast of profound and powerful pith instructions uttered by numerous male and female mahasiddhas, yogis, and dakinis, often in the context of ritual ganacakras and initially kept in their secret treasury. Displaying a vast range of themes, styles, and metaphors, they all point to the single true nature of the mind—mahamudra—in inspiring ways and from different angles, using a dazzling array of skillful means to penetrate the sole vital point of buddhahood being found nowhere but within our own mind. Reading and singing these songs of mystical wonder, bliss, and ecstatic freedom and contemplating their meaning will open doors to spiritual experience for us today just as it has for countless practitioners in the past.

Book excerpt: Have you ever desired to escape and live simply? Have you ever fantasized about moving to a small town? Having spent half of my forty-three year career as a high school principal and volunteer pastor in small towns and counties with less than five thousand people, I learned that bliss was superficial. No matter how positive, people resisted change, especially with a newcomer serving as the agent of change. Kinfolk mattered more than issues. To survive, newcomers walked a fine line and had to learn who controlled and who was related to whom. Relationships mattered more than issues. Good versus evil became obvious. In Freedom’s Tree, Rock Creek Valley resembled Canaanite cities with heavily fortified bulwarks. Interstate highway construction had decimated the economy and school reorganization altered valley culture. Perceived as invaders, newcomers arrived in Rock Creek at God’s direction, while a murderer escaped detection and residents presumed another’s guilt.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Shadow of Freedom is a collection of poems and prayers that I wrote during a very diffi cult time in my life due to physical, mental, and sexual abuse. After surviving multiple attempts of suicide I gave up on death and just dealt with the pain. I lived and wrote in the shadow of freedom with the dream that someday I would become free and soar like an eagle to be the person I was created to be in this lifetime. To express oneself verbally was wrong and for me to pen the words of these poems I would always have to hide somewhere in the shadows in order not to be caught and punished for expressing my thoughts and feelings. Today I no longer live in that prison of abuse nor do I live in the shadows. I can openly express my thoughts and feelings. I have found that freedom is a beautiful thing and today I soar as that eagle I always dreamed of! I pray these poems and prayers will penetrate the darkest shadows of all who read them and bring light, peace, freedom, and healing to their dark wounded heart, soul, and spirit.
