Book Validation of the Far infrared Foreign broadened Water Vapour Continuum from Airborne Field Campaign Measurements

Download or read book Validation of the Far infrared Foreign broadened Water Vapour Continuum from Airborne Field Campaign Measurements written by Ralph Beeby and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes spectrally-resolved radiance measurements, recorded using the Imperial College-built Tropospheric Airborne Fourier Transform Spectrometer (TAFTS), to validate the current parameterisation of the far-infrared foreign- broadened continuum of atmospheric water vapour in line-by-line radiative transfer models. The current parameterisation is not based on measurement through the centre of the far-IR spectral region, but is constructed by interpolation from measurements either side of the band. Accurate knowledge of this parameterisation is essential as the far-IR contribution to the planetary outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) is significant. The research takes the form of a radiative closure study, comparing the radiance measurements with simulated radiances modelled using the measured atmospheric state (temperature, humidity) profile as input. The profile information was recorded, alongside the radiance measurements, aboard the UK Met Office / FAAM (Facility for Airborne Atmospheric Measurements) BAe-146 research aircraft, during the first of two field campaigns as part of the CAVIAR (Continuum Absorption in the Visible and Infrared and its Atmospheric Relevance) project. This thesis provides an overview of the relevant atmospheric physics and Fourier Transform Spectroscopy, including a description of TAFTS; the construction of the atmospheric profiles from the various in-situ, radiosonde and model datasets; the calibration of the radiances measured by TAFTS and derivation of the foreign- broadened water vapour continuum between 114- 540 cm-1 within the framework of the line-by-line radiative transfer model (LBLRTM v12.0). The resulting continuum is compared to other relevant recent studies. The measurements from this study suggest an increase in continuum strength up to 11 % at 238.6 cm -1, decreasing steadily to a reduction of 55 % at 114 cm -1 and 54 % at 513 cm-1. However, the uncertainties in these measurements are considerable, and might equally suggest an increase in continuum strength.

Book Research in the Far Infrared Region of the Spectrum

Download or read book Research in the Far Infrared Region of the Spectrum written by Nathan Ginsburg and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigations in three areas of the far infrared spectroscopy were carried out. These were (1) intensities and widths of lines in the rotational spectrum of water vapor, (2) reflection and transmission measurements on crystals at temperatures down to that of liquid helium, and (3) characteristics of some far infrared detectors. The investigation on the line widths and intensities in the rotational spectrum of water vapor were performed on the far infrared vacuum grating spectrometer designed and constructed here. Pressure broadening by nitrogen and self broadening were measured for three lines and appropriate constants determined by the Ladenburg-Reiche method. (Author).

Book Collisional Effects on Molecular Spectra

Download or read book Collisional Effects on Molecular Spectra written by Jean-Michel Hartmann and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2021-01-12 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gas phase molecular spectroscopy is a powerful tool for obtaining information on the geometry and internal structure of isolated molecules and their interactions with others. It enables the understanding and description, through measurements and modeling, of the influence of pressure on light absorption, emission, and scattering by gas molecules, which must be taken into account for the correct analysis and prediction of the resulting spectra. Collisional Effects on Molecular Spectra: Laboratory Experiments and Models, Consequences for Applications, Second Edition provides an updated review of current experimental techniques, theoretical knowledge, and practical applications. After an introduction to collisional effects on molecular spectra, the book moves on by taking a threefold approach: it highlights key models, reviews available data, and discusses the consequences for applications. These include areas such as heat transfer, remote sensing, optical sounding, metrology, probing of gas media, and climate predictions. This second edition also contains, with respect to the first one, significant amounts of new information, including 23 figures, 8 tables, and around 700 references.Drawing on the extensive experience of its expert authors, Collisional Effects on Molecular Spectra: Laboratory Experiments and Models, Consequences for Applications, Second Edition, is a valuable guide for all those involved with sourcing, researching, interpreting, or applying gas phase molecular spectroscopy techniques across a range of fields. Provides updated information on the latest advances in the field, including isolated line shapes, line-broadening and -shifting, line-mixing, the far wings and associated continua, and collision-induced absorption Reviews recently developed experimental techniques of high accuracy and sensitivity Highlights the latest practical applications in areas such as metrology, probing of gas media, and climate prediction

Book Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts

Download or read book Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts written by S. Böhme and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-14 with total page 787 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts, which has appeared in semi-annual volumes since 1969, is devoted to the recording, summarizing and indexing of astronomical publications throughout the world. It is prepared under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union (according to a resolution adopted at the 14th General Assembly in 1970). Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts aims to present a comprehensive documenta tion of literature in all fields of astronomy and astrophysics. Every effort will be made to ensure that the average time interval between the date of receipt of the original literature and publication of the abstracts will not exceed eight months. This time interval is near to that achieved by monthly abstracting journals, compared to which our system of accumu lating abstracts for about six months offers the advantage of greater convenience for the user. Volume 31 contains literature published in 1982 and received before July 15, 1982; some older literature which was received late and which is not recorded in earlier volumes is also included. We acknowledge with thanks contributions to this volume by Dr. J. Bouska, Prague, who surveyed journals and publications in Czech and supplied us with abstracts in English .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 80 years the Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued. The current list of Specialist Periodical Reports can be seen on the inside flap of this volume.
