Book Living Anionic Polymerization of Styrene and 1 3 butadiene in Ethylbenzene

Download or read book Living Anionic Polymerization of Styrene and 1 3 butadiene in Ethylbenzene written by Stephane Auguste and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The kinetics of the n-butyllithium initiated polymerization of styrene and 1,3-butadiene in ethylbenzene has been studied for the first time under industrially relevant conditions of concentration and temperature. Raman spectroscopy has been used to follow the monomer concentration over a wide range of conversions, and UV spectroscopy to follow the appearance of the propagating live-ends with time. The apparent rate constants for the initiation and propagation reactions in the polymerization of styrene in ethylbenzene have been determined and their activation energies evaluated. The propagation rate constant in the polymerization of I,3-butadiene in ethylbenzene has also been determined. A quantitative study of the livingness of polystyryllithium and polybutadienyllithium live-ends in ethylbenzene at temperatures above 50 has been carried out for the first time, using both UV spectroscopy and viscometry to measure the rate of change of polyanion concentration. It has been shown that polystyryllithium live-ends are more stable than polybutadienyllithium live-ends. A mechanism of chain-transfer to the solvent has been proposed and a comparison with the stability of the live-ends in cyclohexane has been done. Linear homopolymers, linear and star-shaped block copolymers of styrene and 1,3-butadiene are of particular industrial interest and have been synthesized in the present work, and characterized using conventional gel permeation chromatography and differential viscometry. Finally, a modelling package has been used to simulate the effect of feed perturbations on the molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of living polymers synthesized in a continuous stirred tank reactor undergoing periodic feed oscillations. The effect on the dispersity index of the polymer produced of the pulse(s) parameters have been studied and some predictions confirmed experimentally using the alkyllithium initiated polymerization of styrene, that was carried out in a computer controlled continuous flow stirred tank reactor (CSTR).

Book Monomers Polymers and Composites from Renewable Resources

Download or read book Monomers Polymers and Composites from Renewable Resources written by Mohamed Naceur Belgacem and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-10-10 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The progressive dwindling of fossil resources, coupled with the drastic increase in oil prices, have sparked a feverish activity in search of alternatives based on renewable resources for the production of energy. Given the predominance of petroleum- and carbon-based chemistry for the manufacture of organic chemical commodities, a similar preoccupation has recently generated numerous initiatives aimed at replacing these fossil sources with renewable counterparts. In particular, major efforts are being conducted in the field of polymer science and technology to prepare macromolecular materials based on renewable resources. The concept of the bio-refinery, viz. the rational exploitation of the vegetable biomass in terms of the separation of its components and their utilisation as such, or after suitable chemical modifications, is thus gaining momentum and considerable financial backing from both the public and private sectors. This collection of chapters, each one written by internationally recognised experts in the corresponding field, covers in a comprehensive fashion all the major aspects related to the synthesis, characterization and properties of macromolecular materials prepared using renewable resources as such, or after appropriate modifications. Thus, monomers such as terpenes and furans, oligomers like rosin and tannins, and polymers ranging from cellulose to proteins and including macromolecules synthesized by microbes, are discussed with the purpose of showing the extraordinary variety of materials that can be prepared from their intelligent exploitation. Particular emphasis has been placed on recent advances and imminent perspectives, given the incessantly growing interest that this area is experiencing in both the scientific and technological realms. Discusses bio-refining with explicit application to materials Replete with examples of applications of the concept of sustainable development Presents an impressive variety of novel macromolecular materials

Book Catalyst Separation Recovery and Recycling

Download or read book Catalyst Separation Recovery and Recycling written by David J. Cole-Hamilton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-01-13 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at new ways of tackling the problem of separating reaction products from homogeneous catalytic solutions. The new processes involve low leaching supported catalysts, soluble supports such as polymers and dendrimers and unusual solvents such as water, fluorinated organics, ionic liquids and supercritical fluids. The advantages of the different possibilities are discussed alongside suggestions for further research that will be required for commercialisation. Unlike other books, in addition to the chemistry involved, the book looks at the process design that would be required to bring the new approaches to fruition. Comparisons are given with existing processes that have already been successfully applied and examples are given where these approaches are not suitable. The book includes: - New processes for the separation of products from solutions containing homogeneous catalysts - Catalysts on insoluble or soluble supports – fixed bed catalysts - continuous flow or ultrafiltration - Biphasic systems: water - organic, fluorous - organic, ionic liquid – organic, supercritical fluids (monophasic or biphasic with water, organic or ionic liquid) - Comparisons with current processes involving atmospheric or low temperature distillation - Consideration of Chemistry and Process Design - Advantages and disadvantages of each process exposed - Consideration of what else is need for commercialisation
